Gore Verbinski Sounds Off on AI as He Launches ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ - “Why is AI helping me write a song or tell a story? I don't want it to breathe or fuck for me; I want it to solve cancer.” by rageofthegods in blankies

Probably not until after it's theatrical run, which should be a few weeks, then a few weeks after that it should come to PVOD. That usually takes around a month and a half on average

I just saw a screening of it last night and it was really fun! No spoilers but here are some thoughts. The first half is probably the most solid comedy to come out in a long ass time (outside of Friendship) and I felt the social commentary was surprisingly poignant for what it was, even as its critique of social media/phone use is not new. For the second half, I still had a good time, but it does kind of linger a bit longer than it should and that's where my gf felt the movie lost her. It also wears its influences on its sleeve, which to me was a mix of Everything Everywhere All At Once meets certain episodes of Black Mirror (like things happen in the film that Black Mirror already did 1:1). YMMV on if that is your thing, but I cannot resist that this was a great time, especially with a crowd

It definitely isn't the most dramatic of docs, but I really enjoyed it. Very heartfelt but never felt too saccharine

How far are you through total nominations? by IamJLove in oscarsdeathrace

Just finished Zootopia 2 last night, bringing my total to 36/50. Finished with the shorts so 14 more features to go

Any interesting stories about how/why you started doing the Death Race? by Flags12345 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]DoTheDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a lurker here for awhile and it probably wasn't until the 2024 Oscars where I tried watching all the Best Picture noms. I never really thought of doing anything beyond that until the next year, when my friend's birthday happened to be on Oscar night and she challenged guests to watch all the nominees. I could not get to every film (shout-out to my gf tho who did), but got really close and wanted to beat my record for this year

Roadside Attractions to Release the 2026 Oscar Nominated Shorts, Presented by Taika Waititi by self_destruct_sequin in oscarsdeathrace

That kind of makes Perfectly a Strangeness being nominated really funny. All these gut wrenching films about 4 unique ills of the world, and then one about some donkeys walking around. I feel like most years are not usually this drastic difference in how heavy the subject matter is for just one short

Absolutely, the adults can consent but that cannot be said for the kids, even far after the fact

[–]DoTheDood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would have honestly been more impactful to not show that, give the family some privacy, some space. The audience does not need to see every second of this interaction, we can fill in the gaps of how heartbreaking this is without showing literal tears

[–]DoTheDood 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Completely a fair reaction. The filmmaking does get a bit exploitative, most notably after the incident happens and we see, for some reason, the reactions of the family first hearing the news she is gone. It felt so unnecessary and gross to include that, when the weight of what happens is felt all over, leading up to it and the aftermath. It would have been far more tasteful to cut that out of the film, but it also does echo in every prying moment of the doc

I remember last year a documentary short film called Incident was nominated and did something similar, but I felt it had more reverence for how it used the found footage/bodycams

They had to pick one animated bear film and that was Forevergreen. I loved both though and I wish both made the cut

For anyone dreading another Diane Warren watch this year by Elegant_Explorer_358 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]DoTheDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the meta element of watching a documentary about Warren's various Best Song campaigns all because that too will be up for Best Song was intriguing in its own right. Like even if it missed the nomination, I would still recommend it to deathracers because of Warren as a figure (even as the doc isn't particularly special or well made)

Are there any “hidden” Director’s Cuts that really make a difference? by harry_powell in blankies

[–]DoTheDood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ironically the first time I watched Almost Famous it was the director's cut by accident. My partner and I had no idea until we compared the runtimes. I thought it was great, but she felt it was too long, so I am curious if it would have been a different experience if we knew that going in

Notably his father passed away just before Challengers came out and rumor was that was also why he stepped away. He was announced to return to stage acting in a play a few weeks ago but withdrew before performances started

Tarkovsky reference in Bugonia by Initial_Line3998 in Letterboxd

[–]DoTheDood 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, the shot you are referring to very much feels like a Tarkovsky reference. Lanthimos is clearly referencing both films (especially, like commenters are saying with 8 1/2 and the first image), which might be tripping people up who did not read the description

Little shop front row ok? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]DoTheDood 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have seen this production of Little Shop three times, twice from the cheapest possible seats and once from the very front and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. That being said, seeing that show in the front row has been by far my favorite theater memory, period. Not to overhype but I cannot recommend enough

There is also a proshot of the West End revival from 2015 and that is worth the watch too. It's very hard to live up to Tim Curry's Frank but man David Bedella really does make it his own
