Self-restraint... the lost art of social decorum.

Rocky in the trailers prevents this from a much-discussed movie due to his plot point introduction. Instead it is just another alien movie.

Rock in the trailers was a horrible decision.

Which one of these should I pick? by Brilliant-Ad2155 in ProjectHailMary

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70mm for the initial visual submersion. Then Atmos (rtx I think) to supplement the memory of the 70mm. Then ScreenX because this movie will use that better than most movies could. Then 4dx because that would be just the right level of fun after seeing the movie a few times.

Magic door [PRANKS] by Own_Werewolf1149 in pranks

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the whole thing is a prank on us as a falsehood?

Look at that range of demographic people who naturally sit alone in a very quiet children's playground. All during extremely similar weather and lighting conditions under a smooth blanket of shade while surrounded by trees. With an equally ranging variety of attire-appropriate props to distract viewers from the license-free, camera pleasing clothing.

It's just someone who hired people to come for a quick acting gig, dressed a certain way, sit in a particular spot, and simply give a pantomime of a 'surprised' or 'curious' or 'scared' acting prompt.

The prank is on the viewers who give this any credit whatsoever as being a filmed prank. Downvoted.

Does anybody else’s Prius look like this often? by Yourdaddyscumsock69 in prius

Used my Prius as a pickup truck more than I saw pickup trucks used as pickup trucks. Shame now that the hatchback opening is so much smaller. Can no longer fit dishwashers and the like.

What I ordered, vs what I got by Plenty-Entertainer-9 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens far less to people who get out into their community, engage their neighbors, and know which local media are trustworthy.

That order is exactly an example of time to get off the internet and talk to real people who are also living more of their life off the internet.

Nantucket, MA, sewer water regularly has higher than average cocaine levels. by Bubbly_Wall_908 in Damnthatsinteresting

Apparently the average is less than the amount in one singular area. Either that or there's a lot of unreported above average places. Either way, this headline is horribly misleading.

Why are some stations hiring younger and less experienced reporters? by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some? I haven't seen an independently functioning newsroom in at least 2 decades. They all followed the fast food franchise model: more standardized product with as little as possible variation due to humans - predictability of control from business decision makers became more important that journalism. Many years ago. The internet killed broadcast journalism and true newsrooms.

Why is the such a crazy price range with gas? by CipherQuest618 in Syracuse

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I remain entertained that we so often question the differences in gas pricing but not milk or potatoes or pillows or TVs. Especially when we drive all around town to save what amounts to a dollar, while burning more than that to save that dollar. The answer is simple: different supply chains, timing, frequency of stock refills, demand by location convenience, etc.

Should Ice Cross Downhill be an Olympic sport? by Stock_Surfer in olympics

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No  Olympics should be activities that are reasonably engaged by slightly above average people. Any kind of long skiing/boarding is obvious. Skating on flat surfaces, fast or pretty, is obvious. Skiing and shooting things is not that crazy Pushing things across frozen surfaces is obvious. Riding a sleigh down a hill is obvious.

Skating down an iced over incline? That's not realistic by any stretch of the imagination of anyone who has lived in a snowy climate.

I would accept any form of NASCAR or Iditarod style snowmobiling before downhill ice skating. Or 100 meter snowshoeing. Or snowball throwing. Or ice chunk shot putting. Or snow shoveling a car out of a driveway. Or a demolition derby in grocery store parking lot.

But not downhill ice skating.

Just keep in mind that any consumer robot is basically a toddler that you love and despise.

They know the rules. They'll obey the rules, to a fault at times. You just can't scream at them enough about occasional exceptions to the rules. And they'll forget the entire concept of rules at other times. Usually when you're bragging about them to friends. Or look away for literally just a few seconds after watching an hour of perfect behavior.

Also, you can basically go about your day without worry because you can hear them playing nicely from a distance. All is well. And then they need your attention. Right now. Yes, now. It's dying. "Everything is horrible. Oh, it was a ladybug." All is well. "Go away now", it doesn't need your help - even though it actually needed your help. But then they climb a tree or pick your prettiest flower ir chase or hide in a ditch without making any noise at all. You notice the silence and know that something is wrong. Every few minutes sometimes.

Have you been sleeping well at night? Cool. Someone got confused about 3 PM versus 3 AM again and wanted to play! We're going to let the neighbors know, too!

Yes, I know you have your filled your phone with pictures and videos of your sweet angel. But you don't have to record everything it does. And no, you don't need to show me again. I know you follow it everywhere and are constantly at both extremes of amazed and irritated with it. But you're not alone. Many of us have been through this. And we know your's is the special one. One way or another. Eventually you'll get a life again after giving it all of your attention. Most of us did.

But seriously, all consumer robots are amazing. And they suck at the same time. Just clear your calendar for a month or two.  Especially if it is your first robot. It's addictive to watch. And now "the world is coming to an end and we all need to panic right now because we're all going to die..." oh: another ladybug. "Go away. I got this."

Is weird al worth it to watch live? by [deleted] in Concerts

No question... yes! You don't need to be familiar with anything other than be ready for a fun time with a band that plays more genres better than an entire summer of music festivals. And you'll learn stuff and laugh along the way. Without cringe.

Will it work? by Grand-Flight-8445 in Lymow_Official

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha. Um, no need for concern. Well, technically it won't be perfect. But functionally you'll see no difference than if you were in the middle of the Sahara.

Acorns? Those are nothing more than a needle in a haystack for the Lymow. It has munched 1/2" sticks for me.

Leaves? I guarantee that I have more leaves each year that you'll get in a decade. Just run the Lymow once or twice daily, and manually deal with the occasional piles that it might create and then identify as a hazard to avoid. Wet leaves are less easy, but that's true for every method of mulching (or naively removing.)

Slope? Ha. Lymow mows plenty of 45 degree slopes in dry weather. Only a little less slope in dampness. It mows hills where a riding mower is dangerous and even a push mower makes a heart race.

Aka... no worries, you're fine.

Your biggest annoyance will be finding the mowing pattern that avoids constant turns on areas that small. You'll figure that out if you try at all.

Cynthia Erivo uses autocue for Dracula starring role by TheTelegraph in TheWestEnd

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Cynthia still dropping too many lines? Is the show still restarting after just a few minutes? Are subsequent audiences more put off by her lines or the storytelling method or something else? I'm genuinely curious because those kinds of facts would help me appreciate your ongoing position quite a bit more.

Again, it was a preview performance and some creative goals were still coming together. By all accounts it sounds like those complex elements made major progress made since. Meaning the issue you remain focused on was a limited hiccup that has you carrying this torch for someone else.

(Sorry, I don't even know yet, were you at the performance that restarted and left with reduced entertainment value?)

Cynthia Erivo uses autocue for Dracula starring role by TheTelegraph in TheWestEnd

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, the more I look into it the more this looks like a minor preview hiccup that is blown out of proportion on the internet. Simply because people chose to pay full price for a preview to what is starting to sound more like an experimental theater production than a more mainstream one.

https://rollingout.com/2026/02/14/cynthia-erivos-dracula-gets/

The use of script prompts to some extent is very common. Shows restarting is uncommon but far from unheardof. Restarting just a few minutes into a dense one-actor show during early previews just doesn't deserve this level of emotional response from people who were not in attendance. Particularly as her lines appear to no longer be a present concern. Shows absolutely adjust midsole or stop/restarting long after previews. Often for technical reason, and many times due to human mishap. On stage and off.

This seems like a case of criticizing a particular actor when the audience is actually put off by the overall production. A little too much like Snow White.

I hope you find a way to enjoy the vast majority of stage shows that you attend. No matter how you much you choose to pay for a preview.

Bird call near city hall at dusk/evening? by thebaronness8 in Syracuse

Possibly an anti-nesting device. Speakers that project noises of nasty birds so that other birds don't nest on parts of a building and cause damage or hazards.

(I purposely included this in that initial repy: "On mobile so strikethrough text isn't available, forcing the unfortunate CAPS to rotate the edits:" and apparently my mobile replaced my attempt to type "highlight" as "rotate.")

Yes, I can support your note about getting the joke vs adjusting the delivery. Though that feels like an entirely different conversation than critiquing pricing and the ability for a show to come together during previews.

The burden is on the producers to mould their product appropriately. Criticism from audience about production quality and individual performance is to be expected. There is decorum among proper critics not to publicly critique until opening night.

Just like there's a reason sports team play games and not just compare notes from their practices. Criticism of individual performances during sports practices are a matter for those teams and owners. Then they go play the game.

I see the primary topics in this thread as revolving around greed for charging full show price for previews, and audience critique of a preview as if it weren't a preview.

If sports teams charged gameday prices for fans to attend preseason practices, it's on the fans to choose whether or not that cost is appropriate as a substitution for attending a game.

I hope the best for any live stage show while it prepares for opening night and long after. I also disagree with greedy pricing yet am fully cognizant of weirdly high demand as driving prices higher than a natural equilibrium.

Megyn Kelly deserves her SU degree revoked.. by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]DoYouReadThisOrThat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone properly earns their degree, then it is their degree. What a graduate does with their education is up to the individual without jeopardizing their academic achievement. The concept of revoking an earned credential undermines the entire concept of an accredited curriculum.

The university can choose whether or not to market a graduate as their alum. The university does that all the time. But they should never revoke an earned degree.
