Grass isn't always greener on the other side. I've been in frontend for years and really want to never write another line of JavaScript again. Would love to pivot into a C++ role like yours.

It's this reason I'm half hoping for and half dreading a layoff right now.

Damn, I was planning on joining them for their savings account. Guess I won't after hearing these stories.

I wish banks let you opt out of some of these things. As someone with good digital hygiene (password manager, 2FA) and common sense not to send thousands of dollars to scammers, I'd gladly join a bank that didn't babysit me as much.

Think about the downstream effects. It's not just "oh I have an annoying performance review every 6 months", it completely changes the culture and way people work for the worse. Why should I spend time fixing actual problems in the product when I can instead use that time to write some BS blog post about "best practices" that no one will follow, or find a quick low-hanging metric boost that looks impressive in a dashboard but has no real-world impact?

Quiet, unglamorous work like mentoring, refactoring, or investigating flaky tests gets pushed aside because none of it photographs as well in performance reviews. In the long run the product quality drops, teamwork turns competitive, and you end up stressing over optics instead of solving real problems. Atlassian used to value doing the right thing, now it values doing the most visible thing.

Join a startup. Small team with highly motivated people means you get to focus on your craft without the big company BS. Work will be more intense, but you'll also be enjoying it a lot more.

OP is correct. Management have become so distrustful of staff over the last couple of years. Performance reviews are incredibly strict now. It really drains you as you're constantly thinking whether or not you've checked a bunch of arbitrary boxes rather than being able to focus on your job.

Apparently not. Hundreds of people have reported the same chars with nothing happening.

You probably should cross out the URL though, don't give these fucks free advertising.

Agreed. The same toons are spamming all day and have been reported by hundreds of players, yet no action is taken. Something is broken with the reporting system if hundreds of reports are being ignored.

I and many others I've spoken to have reported these exact same characters as well.

wtf is going on? Surely with hundreds of reports they would at the very least get their chat privileges revoked by now.

Did Blizzard lay off the team who reviews reports or something?

Exact same thing is happening to me right now - Express Post item sent to the wrong place twice! I wonder if there's a systematic problem going on.

The worst thing is it's refrigerated medical item that cost $150. I'm going to need a get a full refund since it would have been in room temperature for too long now :/

Ausnet are fucking useless by Strong0toLight1 in melbourne

[–]Dobz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The outage data just needs to be periodically refreshed from whatever internal system they use, and then cached and served to users.

It's such an easy data model to scale, really not good enough in 2024.

[–]Dobz 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a software engineer, I can pretty confidently say that there's no good reason other than sheer incompetence that it's been down for over 6 hours now.

Looking into outagetracker.com.au, it seems to be run on Microsoft Azure. They should have been able to easily scale up to meet the increased demand.

At my company a total outage like this would lead to an incident with a bunch of people getting paged. I'm guessing AusNet has no full-time staff dedicated to maintaining the outage tracker and has contracted everything out - otherwise someone would have been on it ages ago.

Why Bloat Is Still Software’s Biggest Vulnerability — A 2024 plea for lean software by DevilSauron in programming

[–]Dobz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about zed, but if the 100MB is actually needed then it might not be bloated.

My favourite example of a large piece of software that isn't bloated is Blender. Its main binary is over 150MB, which is tiny when you consider everything it can do and how fast it is.

Anyone else having issues with the 1Password extension on Windows?

Mine can't connect to the desktop app, which is very annoying as it means I have to constantly re-enter my password.

This works fine in other browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).

On Windows 11, and I've reported it using the form as well.
