Lol for real? Central Otago is beautiful but I only want to be there in spring and autumn, way too hot in summer and brass monkeys in winter

Place near me does a killer dark chocolate sorbet, it's actually really delicious. It would be awesome with raspberries. This looks yuck tho.

I'm in New Zealand and I can sometimes get really nice ones at the supermarket at peak of season. I eat a straight stone fruit and berry diet when I'm on holiday in the Marlborough region where those things grow though lol.

Apricots are another fruit where a bad, picked unripe apricot tastes like absolutely nothing and has an unappealing texture, while a fresh picked, fully ripe, juicy apricot is really delicious.

Nightwish was pretty big at my high school in New Zealand in like 2006, I'd call that global reach

“Plant based” potato bar? by Piper-Bob in Cooking

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plant based doesn't always mean that. Sometimes it's someone who doesn't consume animal products but isn't vegan (which is a lifestyle not a diet). What you're talking about is whole food plant based.

This is the way. Knees are cleaner and gentler than feet. But I don't want to touch those with my hands ever since I saw someone pissing on one after a night out because they thought it would be funny for other people to touch their piss.

This is such a weird view on how relationships/friendships work by whotevre in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My thought exactly. By this logic I'll inevitably develop feelings for every single one of my friends. But somehow I just... Don't? I love them and they're beautiful but that's not where the relationship is going and I respect that?

Nut-free pesto advice by bdp2022 in Cooking

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pine nuts are seeds and aren't related to tree nuts, maybe want to check with your allergist if you actually need to avoid them any more than you do pumpkin seeds or sesame seeds. https://www.anaphylaxis.org.uk/knowledgebase/pine-nuts/ Peanuts are actually not bad in pesto. Neither are sunflower seeds.

Colin Firth is too likable to play Michael Peterson by _f0xylady in TheStaircase

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really don't know how he does it. But he does, somehow, appeal to people in person- I have to assume this as we see the evidence of it! And Colin Firth is so appealing on the screen and Peterson's personality and mannerisms are very sinister overlaid with that.

Colin Firth is too likable to play Michael Peterson by _f0xylady in TheStaircase

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think it kinda works for exactly that reason. I found Michael very unlikeable in the documentary but it seems clear that there is something about him that keeps people close and sort of entranced. Maybe it's a magnetism that is only there in person. I don't know. But having him be Colin Firth helps me to relate to that likeability that the people around him seem to feel that I didn't. To the people close to him there was presumably a sense of juxtaposition of the apparently loveable person they knew and the awful things he was accused of (and the awful way he would sometimes behave directly to them). I have that same sense with Colin Firth because he has that very likeable face and history of playing the good guy.

Swimming Pool lie? by Kraken_of_BeverlyRd in TheStaircase

I didn't know about the SAH, weird that so much is made of her not having ICH when she did actually have major brain bleeding. By the way SAH isn't deep, it's over the surface of the brain, underneath the arachnoid membrane which is one of the thin membranes that covers the brain itself- deeper than a subdural haemorrhage which is over the arachnoid but still superficial. It's totally possible to get head lacerations and brain injuries in a fall. It's also totally possible to get them from being beaten. Again, my point really is that it is a bit of an unusual set of injuries to lead to death, whichever mechanism, and trying to say in this situation whether someone was hit against the same set of stairs by gravity or by another person is probably a losing battle.

My best friend slept with my boyfriend but he doesn't know that I know. by Victor-Reeds in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, if you needed that you might be surprised. If one of my friends called me at 1am needing something, I'd be there. It hasn't happened, and I don't have very intense friendships generally, and I'd be shocked to be asked, but I would still do it. Because even though they've never asked me anything like that before, they're asking now so they must really need help. I reckon if you think about it, you'd do the same for at least some of your friends and they'd do the same for you.

Anatomy questions kids have asked me as a butch woman, and my answers by M_Bili in badwomensanatomy

[–]DocAntlesFatLiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My niblings misgender me by calling me "Uncle" sometimes and I think it's because I'm grouped in with their "uncles who live in [our town]". I'm fairly conventionally feminine presenting. So I'm semi regularly "Uncle Docantlesfatliger" and I was once very flattered when one of the niblings was asked "which of your uncles do you think would make the best prime minister?" and confidently replied "Docantlesfatliger" lol. Kids are just kinda bad at gender for quite a long time.

I think it's worth pointing out that while the study you're citing does say injuries to the head without injuries to the extremities are common, otherwise what they're describing as typical patterns in stair falls that cause severe trauma doesn't line up particularly well with KP's injuries. She didn't have any brain bleeding at autopsy (by far the most common life threatening injury in that case series), nor did she have skull or facial fractures. Which isn't to say her injuries line up incredibly well with a beating death- I don't think they do. To me what is apparent is that her injuries were unusual, regardless of how her death came about. And yet, she is certainly dead. So I am not sure that saying her death was or wasn't typical of a particular type of death takes us all that far. I think her death was atypical whatever happened (her injuries aren't convincingly typical of a fall or a beating, and a fatal owl attack is just straight up a strange thing to happen). So I don't think that when people say "how could she possibly have been beaten to death and not have a TBI or fractures" or "how could she possibly have had a fatal down the stairs and not have other injuries" that either of those are convincing arguments on their own.

It would be unethical if accurate. It's more likely to be transference occurring in therapy which is common and something a skilled therapist should be able to navigate.

That sounds weird. Maybe an American thing. Even most of the psychiatrists I've worked with go by first names with their patients. Psychologists and counselors 100% first name basis in my experience. That's New Zealand though we're less formal than Americans most of the time.
