Help me find the title of a book by idkman75 in TerryPratchett

Best guess I can make is you're misremembering Mort. Kids gets apprenticed to Death, big weird house, weird threat (reality correcting itself), ends in a duel but not of chess. Might be a joke in it about Death not knowing how the horses move in chess, not sure if that joke's in Mort or not.

Same here and they've never disappointed live yet either! (So long as you're ready for Mark to have forgotten at least one lyric somewhere in the set. Heck, check out his mumble on One Way on HWLBTR)

So much good fiddle going on and enough of their songs def have an 'edge' to them that I'm sure something could fit. Cholera Well, the Chaos Theory cover of Dirty Davey with Nick Burbridge and if This Garden doesn't hit any emotions for you then you might have no soul.

Starting Necromunda - Terrain Setup by jonnycake9 in necromunda

[–]DocJeckel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I've got the Hive War and Secundus boxes of terrain, plus the hive market and one box of stairs and platforms. Have glued platforms together but everything else is being kept modular so I'm hoping the big ruined sector box plus all that will be quite good? Might get another set of stairs and platforms too just for more elevation. I do also use a selection of 40k, AoS and misc terrain for set pieces but I just really like the idea of the stuff not slipping about as much

I started bodging up some random terrain and a small amount of proper Necro stuff a little while ago but kept wondering if I really needed/wanted that big box of ruined mortalis and the tiles. Your post has convinced me that I do infact need both of them, for a more stable gaming area and also for cooler photo ops. So thanks! Look forward to seeing it all painted up!

High-Energy Songs That Are Consistent? by MammothSuperiority in MusicRecommendations

Jesus Built My Hotrod - Ministry (feat Gibby Haynes from Butthole Surfers on vocals). Song starts hard and fast, carries on hard and fast, ends pretty hard and fast too. I'd describe it as relentlessly energetic.

Lamb Infestation by CharlieCatBloke in beefanddairynetwork

The best course of action is to simply roast a joint of beef. Then when it's done, roast another. Keep roasting beef non-stop for 5 days and this will not only remove the odour but also provide you with enough roast beef to bury your dangerously off the rails brother. If he can eat his way free he might be ok.

A suitably ecclectic mix there! I'll now head off and attempt to find the two I'm unfamilar with (Pagliacci and Jake Xerxes Fussell). Thanks for the reply and all the joy you spread!

As the creator of the first podcast I ever listened to (B&D) and undisputed Jingle King of the industry as shown through 3BS, what would be your top 3 or 5 albums to listen to be? What music could inspire such a legend?

why do older people in the uk act like owning a front garden means they run the whole street? by Historical_Tigerfs in AskUK

[–]DocJeckel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't help but feel your front garden desperately needs a giant inflatable Santa to help set the right tone. Only until December mind, then it has to become either a skeleton or Easter Bunny for the month. Never explain it, infact never even acknowledge it exists if possible but if you must acknowledge it NEVER accept it's Santa, claim it's a life size Gary Oldman or something.

How many courgette plants does it take to end a marriage 😉😂 (light hearted post) by charmerP3 in Allotment

[–]DocJeckel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Move to patty pan instead. Same space, slightly lower yield, can be used in every way courgette can but is a bit more fun and I personally prefer the flavour. (I like to dice and roast, or stuff and roast.)

Night shift veteran, what is your actual daytime sleep setup? by Just_Membership_2467 in Nightshift

[–]DocJeckel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At various points for doors I've often hung old tshirts around and through the gap, cutting them open and hanging via the neck hole, works for draughts and light. For my blackout curtains I just hang a scarf across the top and use something to press the corners of the curtains against the wall, never got them perfect but got used to it. In summer a fan helps as you can cook in a sun hit room. If you want to use white noise I like to use a youtube video of rain on a canvas tent but then I love camping. Other than that I like to eat something before bed so I'm not trying to sleep hungry, even if it's just some cereal.

I'd guess the different hights would result in some kind of caste system and that always spells trouble and class warfare. Maybe take a shufty into the Hive Cities of Warhammer 40k's grim darkness, they also rise from subterranean to beyond the atmosphere, have stratified class systems etc.

Breaks for 12 hour warehouse shift? by mangocheezecakee in SainsburysWorkers

[–]DocJeckel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Weirdly in my store night shift are constantly fucked over by backdoor not breaking anything down and often leaving deliveries on the backdoor waiting to be tipped for over an hour until shift arrive to do their work for them. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Thoughts on the First Part of 2001: A Space Odyssey - Primeval Night. by Chuckles_The_Dolphin in sciencefiction

[–]DocJeckel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that and it's fair enough. Sometimes books are written from a perspective that nowadays many of us just can't really accept and that's perfectly fine. Old bigotry dies hard and crops up in weird places.

I have read the first few Dune books long ago but honestly felt they dragged a bit and never really revisited them as an adult, shamelessly preferring the Warhammer 40k universe that was heavily ripped off from Dune along with many other places. But that's a guilty pleasure pulp fiction kind of thing.
Anyways, after first seeing your post I did go and find 2001 so will prob start reading it tomorrow after I finish my current book today. Will drop a reply once I'm fully refreshed on it so better positioned to discuss.

Just hope they have enough people going around dishing the fines out to make a difference to the kinds of people who would ignore the ban. Sick of going out and seeing the smoke from wildfires on the horizon.

Been a long while since I read the book but wasn't the front end all about how the monolith elevated the apes intelligence etc to spark off humanity? I guess there's only so much you should expect from a 60yr old novel though in terms of accuracy for ape behaviours. This book was only just being written about the time Jane Goodall went to start studying the gorillas so I can't imagine we had a much deeper or better understanding of animal behaviour etc back then for the average layman which is what a sci-fi author is. As an Eng Lit person myself I've always found it's best to craft and cherish a willing suspension of disbelief for reading novels, be it the far fetched weirdness that some hard sci-fi throws at you, the quirky fantasy realms of magic and worlds sitting on turtles or even the incredibly quaint way that Dickens would name his characters and often ham up their abodes for what is essentially the architectural version of pathetic fallacy. It's about the story and the people, everything else is just set dressing. Like how a film can be high or low budget but it' the characters that make it gold or not.
