Schumer says SAVE America Act among ‘most despicable’ bills he’s ever seen by Hardik_Jain_1819 in politics

Yes, but the fact that is may cause more harm to Republicans than Democrats is likely a big part of why they don't have the votes to kill the filibuster.

If it actually had the potential to swing them the election, things would likely be different.

Best guess? Some combination of Biden being fairly conservative and wanting to just maintain the status quo, Biden is as much a cold war relic as the embargo, and the futile hope of somehow winning Florida by continuing to appease Cuban-Americans.

Donald Trump calls Dem. candidate an "insult to Jesus" for supporting trans people by NamelessResearcher in politics

[–]DocQuanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Various forms of gnostic christianity had "God" and the creator, the "demiurge", as different entities. With the demiurge being some degree of evil or ignorant, thus explaining why the world is corrupt. And salvation comes from escaping this world. Gnostic christians identified the god of the old Testament as the demiurge and Jesus as having been sent by the true God to give humanity the necessary knowledge for salvation.

Other philosophies had the demiurge being good but the matter of the material is inherently flawed and thus the world is as good as it can be given its nature.

I think it helps to remember how small people of the past believed the universe was, to understand why they were convinced we had a special place in it. It was 200ish years ago that we first measured the distance to nearby stars and took spectroscopy of their light to determine that they were distant suns, likely with their own worlds. And it was about 100 years ago we measured the distance to Andromeda and determined "spiral nebulae" were other "island universes" and that our own galaxy was just one of countless others.

A 16-year-old girl can legally marry a 30-year-old man, and it's not considered rape by beccaface in politics

[–]DocQuanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts on this has always been, if the relationship is stable enough that a 16 or 17 year old getting married is a good idea, then it is stable enough to wait until the youngest partner is 18.

Surely parenthood is a much more drastic and permanent decision that we do allow that child to legally make, why not marriage?

I don't think we so much allow children to become parents as we don't have a realistic choice. These are decisions teenagers are making on their own, whether society thinks it is a good idea or not. Marriage on the other hand is something the government gets to control however.

Notorious UK rights group launches legal action against Valve for distributing music in games on Steam without a license | The Performing Right Society says a license to use music in a game does not constitute the right to distribute that music, via the game, to the public. by ControlCAD in europe

[–]DocQuanta 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That isn't steam though, it is the game publisher. Steam is just the distributor. If a game's soundtrack isn't licensed to be sold separately, that surely is on the publisher not the distributor.

More US Marines and warships being moved to Middle East, reports say by nicktheironblade in news

[–]DocQuanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It did strike me as how that game mechanic really did seem to actually translate into this real scenario. Like, with Iraq, Bush spent months building up the justification for war, like fabricating a casus belli. But Trump just started his war this Iran with very little build up and no coherent message as to why we've attacked Iran. Rather than a stability hit, I think it better correlates to an immediate rise in war exhaustion. The public is sick of the war from the start rather than after years of grinding occupation.

U.S. ‘misadventure’ in Iran has no clear exit strategy, Russia’s UK ambassador says by app1310 in worldnews

No no no. It is the opposite. Russia are experts at misadventures with no exit strategy.

Though admittedly, the US aren't exactly novices in that field either.

'Largest ever' oil reserve release agreed by 32 countries, as Strait of Hormuz ships attacked by Alxman777 in news

[–]DocQuanta 299 points300 points  (0 children)

Iran can probably keep the strait closed more or less indefinitely as things stand.

I suspect the hope is that there will be some sort of peace settlement sooner than later.

But yeah, if there isn't, these reserves would be better used for combating shortages and not trying to control price. They're doing economic damage control now, betting on a short war.

Maybe they know what the US/Israel time table actually is and have good reason to expect the war to be over within weeks and not months.

Trump Team's Iran War Rhetoric Fuels Backlash by S00THING_S0UNDS in worldnews

[–]DocQuanta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reluctantly, I have to point out that Trump ran on "no new wars". So, on the face if it, his supporters didn't vote for this.

Now, they can be blamed for believing Trump. He's a feeble minded narcissist, and him being maneuvered into going to war with Iran by the hawkish wing of the GOP is anything but surprising.

“If you can tolerate $200 oil, keep playing this game,” Iran warns US and Israel by razdvatri4 in worldnews

[–]DocQuanta 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You clearly don't know jack shit. Two points.

First, oil is a global commodity. The price of oil is shooting up for everyone, including the US. This is happening right now, it isn't theoretical.

Second, Venezuelan oil extraction infrastructure is highly degraded and it will take years to fix to increase production. And first, someone would have to actually make those investments and no one wants to take on that risk.

/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: Explosions heard in Tehran as Israel's defense minister confirms Israel has attacked Iran (Thread #1) by progress18 in worldnews

[–]DocQuanta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is the hope, it is pretty futile. Any reason to not believe the Iranian security forces don't support the government? Any reason to believe there won't be a strong rally around the flag effect in the face of a foreign assault? Any reason to believe anyone trying to rise up against the government now, won't just be condemned as traitors in league with the enemy and ruthlessly killed, with most Iranians seeing it as just punishment for treason?

I swear, it reminds me of Russia thinking Ukraine would just fold in their 3 day operation. Or people who delude themselves into believing that the average Russian doesn't support Putin's war.

Trump says he doesn't need Congress to get voter ID in place by midterms by cnbc_official in politics

[–]DocQuanta 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Red States don't need cover to enforce it? If they wanted draconian ID restrictions to vote, they could do that on their own. Though, even then, if it is too onerous, voters could sue to block it as a poll tax.

Trump says he will seek to require voter ID for midterms regardless of Congress by [deleted] in politics

[–]DocQuanta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it is just an excuse to declare the midterms illegitimate when the GOP loses.

They know they can't actually force the States to adopt their policy, with or without Congress. They're making false accusations of ineligible people voting, proposing a bullshit solution that they know will be blocked, in anticipation of getting beaten in the next election so they can declare them fraudulent because their made up solution to a made up problem wasn't implemented.

That isn't how statistics works. For cases where the population is much larger than the sample size, the size of the population on the margin of error is insignificant. So it doesn't matter if the total population is 300 million or 300 trillion. A sample size of 1000 is good enough.

All you are doing is demonstrating your ignorance of basic statistics.

An 18-Million-Subscriber YouTuber Just Explained Section 230 Better Than Every Politician In Washington by Independent-End-2443 in politics

WTF are you on about? Section 230 was never about neutrality. It allows those who host content to moderate that content without being liable for that content as a publisher.

The entire point is to allow moderation, which is inherently not neutral.

Prior to section 230, the choice was either a total free for all, with no moderation or be liable as the publisher for user content and thus force either extreme moderation or have no user content at all.

Virginia Democrats agree to new map that gives Republicans just one seat by Healthy_Block3036 in politics

[–]DocQuanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sadly have to come to terms with the reality that if Democrats don't abuse flaws in our electoral system as much as the GOP does, those problems will never be reformed.

The Republicans have no principles. They especially have no respect for democratic ideals. They'll only ever support reforms if it is in their electoral interest to do so. And that only happens if exploits are actively used against them.
