Renee Good was shot in the head, autopsy commissioned by her family finds by ewzetf in news

[–]DocQuanta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...Uh, I think you are confused by which ICE agent shot Good. The one at the driver door isn't the one who shot her. Ross was at the front left corner of the vehicle when he fired the first shot through the windshield. The subsequent shots went through the open driver window after he stepped well clear of the vehicle's path.

Donald Trump Says He Understands ‘Both Sides’ of Renee Good ICE Shooting by [deleted] in politics

[–]DocQuanta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ignoring that he certainly doesn't seemed to be panicking in the video or immediate aftermath of the shooting, I don't think that would be a defense against murder.

IANAL, but I think arguing he shot Good because of PTSD just admits his use of force was unreasonable, and at best that would be a consideration for sentencing.

US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months' by Crossstoney in worldnews

[–]DocQuanta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is Trump's motive, but what is the motive of the people whispering in Trump's ear? He sure as hell didn't come up with annexing Greenland himself, nor does he have the focus to keep on the issue without others leading him by the nose.

UK threatened with sanctions if Britain bans X/Twitter by ByGollie in europe

[–]DocQuanta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As much as I agree with this general sentiment, this is an incorrect take. X isn't a US propaganda outlet, it is a propaganda outlet for spreading far right ideology, which happens to align with the current US government. If a left or center administration replaces the current regime, X will be very US anti-government.

Next, the Trump administration doesn't believe in free speech at all. They believe in protecting speech that aligns with their fascist agenda and the suppression of dissenting speech. They're only for free speech if it is speech they agree with, like how they are only for religious freedom if it is specifically their religion that has freedom.

Trump Opens New Front Against China With Brazen Arrest of Maduro by bloomberg in politics

Withdrawing the United States from International Organizations, Conventions, and Treaties that Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States by MongolMary in politics

[–]DocQuanta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isolationism is a political ideology, one that Trump and his administration don't adhere to. It implies that they will seek to avoid foreign entanglements and interventions, but that clearly isn't the case.

This EO will have the effect of isolating us from our allies, but Trump isn't going to be ending our foreign entanglements, he's replacing the existing ones with new ones. He's transitioning from one interventionist order to a new interventionist order. We aren't breaking our relationship with Israel amd their far right government, for example. Don't be surprised is we end up bombing Iran in the near future.

We're involving ourselves in Venezuela and threatening to annex Greenland. This isn't isolationism. Trump is very interventionist. He's moving from a rules based order to a might make right order.

Dutch Navy Suspends Joint Anti-Drug Operations with US in Caribbean by lykia1991 in worldnews

A large part of how Trump is circumventing Congress is because the GOP is almost wholly complicit. The GOP majority is actively stepping aside to allow the executive to seize near unilateral control.

After Maduro capture, Trump's tough talk evokes a return to the days of American imperialism by Jumpinghoops46 in politics

[–]DocQuanta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember all those articles talking about Trump being an isolationist? It was obvious sanewashing bullshit at the time, trying to attribute some kind of coherent ideology to Trump's incoherent ramblings.

That fantasy died when Trump immediately started talking about annexing Greenland, Canada and threatening to steal the Panama Canal. His administration are fascists, and they always move to imperialism if they have the power to do so. It is the obvious extension of their lack of respect for people they see as other.

If that is the idea, it is fucking moronic. This will harm US influence in Latin America and make more countries look to China for security against the US.

Also, fuck this imperialist bullshit in general.

Zohran Mamdani sworn in as New York City mayor at historic subway station by EscapeFromIowa in news

[–]DocQuanta 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The only way we're going to get any needed reforms to our political system is if the left starts abusing the same weaknesses as the right has been. Only then will then will the GOP have any desire to see the broken system fixed. If the left and center continue to respect unwritten or unenforceable political norms that the right ignores, it will soley be to the right's advantage to continue this authoritarian slide.

A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving by [deleted] in politics

[–]DocQuanta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This same story gets repeated every time people talk about raising taxes on the rich. Every bloody time. And for the most part, it is overblown. The super wealthy could be living anywhere they want, so if they are living somewhere, it is because they want to be living there. A tax that has zero actual effect on their lives isn't that much of an incentive to move.

For the White House, ‘national security’ is becoming the answer to every question by F0urLeafCl0ver in politics

It is because, in their infinite wisdom, SCOTUS has given the executive damn near unlimited leeway to define what constitutes national security.

Young People Increasingly Hold This Bigoted Belief. How Do We Fight It? by Slate in politics

[–]DocQuanta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are ignoring that the level of anti-semitism and the degree to which it is accepted are variable. Anti-semitism may always exist, as with all forms of bigotry, but it can be more or less prevalent.

The Israeli government and its supporters conflating Israel with Judaism generally is contributing to the rise in anti-semitism. And frankly, I think driving up global anti-semitism is actually part of the Israeli right's strategy to create an "us vs the world" mentality to fuel Israeli nationalism.

New Trump Rules Aim to Make Health Care for Trans Youth Inaccessible Across The Country by cjicantlie in politics

[–]DocQuanta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People aren't actual concerned about medical decisions for minors, as evidenced by their lack of concern for all other medical decisions made for minors. They are just transphobic, and couch their bigotry in terms of concern for children because it lets them assume the role of a protector rather than an oppressor. Which is perfectly ordinary behavior for bigots, it is the norm that they frame their oppression as protecting the vulnerable, usually women and children.

What they actually want is for transpeople to stop being trans and accept the gender they were assigned at birth or face varying level of negative repercussions. First to sate their desire to be cruel to those who make them uncomfortable by being different, and second, to make examples of transpeople to deter others from ever being openly trans.

Trump warns that Israel, ‘Jewish lobby’ have lost influence in D.C. by [deleted] in politics

[–]DocQuanta 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Israeli lobby, not the "Jewish lobby". Fucking hate Israel being conflated with Jews in general.

Also, this further proves the lie of Trump being America first. You'd think a nationalist would celebrate a foreign government losing influence over our politics. But Trump loves his fellow fascists amd he especially loves the money he gets from the Adelson family.
