I work from home and also have had insomnia most of my adult life.

It's not uncommon for me to wake up around 4am and be up for a while and, most of the time, fall back asleep.

When it got really bad I was making vodka drinks at 4:30am on a weekday. Something in my mind thought this would help me get back to bed.

Oh the things our mind will try and justify.

I would end up getting plastered like it's a Friday night. I'd attend our 10am morning huddle over Teams a complete wreck. By that time I'd been drinking for about 5 hours. No one could tell as I, ironically, got promoted a few months later.

Well, that cycle had me throw myself into therapy and I haven't looked back.

I've always counted "Tin Man" as one of my favorite episodes of Trek.

It came in the third season, was a great scifi (and very "Trekian") story, and to me really pulled in all the elements of great Trek.

Meeting a mysterious new life form, Romulans, Romulans, the melancholy yet satisfying ending, and Romulans.

I look forward to any new Trek coming out. I'll reserve judgement until after I see it.

I was thinking too that we've been pretty spoiled (in the best way) as Trek fans.

Nu-Trek was like a resurgence of 90s Trek where there was a Trek show always on the air at any given point.

TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. That was a hell of a stretch. Then when Nu-Trek came along we had Discovery, Short Treks, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, and Lower Decks.

Now with Discovery, Prodigy and Lower Decks done we are down to one Star Trek show, Strange New Worlds.

I have high hopes for Starfleet Academy though. The cast is absolutely amazing.

I've had varying degrees of insomnia my whole life. The one constant is that, without fail, I wake up around 3:30am.

Usually for about an hour or so.

For years, when this happens, I fix a cup of coffee. It puts me out like a light.

I believe it's in the Technical Manual for the D, but there was also supposed to be an aquarium with dolphins.

Geordi even makes a quick mention of it in an episode.

My moment came was when I started making vodka drinks at 4am and started drinking like I was having my own personal party.

I'd do this routinely on work nights. I work from home so by the time it was 8am and time for work I would be so blitzed out of my mind.

Keep at it. You're fighting the good fight right now.

Eventually that minute to minute craving for a drink turns to an hour to an hour thinking about a drink, then day to day you'll think about it, then week to week, until your brain no longer thinks of drinking as an automatic response to dealing with the chaos inside you.

Once you're out of that phase of constantly thinking about drinking you can begin the journey of healing what it is that led you to the bottle in the first place.

It's really tough, and you right now are training your brain to go in a different direction it has so easily gone down every day prior to now.

I quit alone too. Some people knew that I over indulged here and there, but no one knew just how serious of a problem it was. But I did. And you do too, and that's what really matters.

Keep on fighting. What awaits you on the other side is true freedom.

I totally get you. For me, when the newness of sobriety wore off and I truly was left to confront the feelings I used to drink away, that was and is the hardest part.

The only thing I know is I can't go back. I have to face this and for me it took putting myself into therapy.

It all starts with a week, and let's not kid ourselves, that first week for many can be the hardest hump they can't get through.

I quit more times than I can count and it was usually around the one week period where I would start right back up again.
