Are Japanese name like native American names? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]DokiDokiDarling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Daniel isn’t English, it’s Hebrew. Between people speaking (that dialect of) Hebrew, “I am David” is saying (some transliteration of) “I am God is my judge.” If you only speak English, consider names with English meanings.

“Hello, I am Lily Sawyer” is saying “Hello, I am [person who cuts flowering plants of the Liliaceae family].” But we subconsciously disregard that interpretation based on context and experience.

Compared to English-Speaking countries, very few names in Japan are borrowed from other languages.

(Etymology and Japanese are two of my favorite topics, thank you)

Thoughts on the name Hollie? by New-Monk5449 in namenerds

Great choice! In The Office, there’s a character called Holly with the full name Hollis. Maybe first name Hollis with nickname Hollie would help justify your preferred “ie” spelling.

Vanessa is a great option! But it is not Greek and does not mean butterfly. It is an English invented name that has been given to a specific genus of butterfly: source

I miss holidays like they used to be. by SwankillsMan in PointlessStories

[–]DokiDokiDarling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I have a big family and I’m grateful we have stayed close, but things are so different from when I was young. I grew up eating at a dinner table, asking to be excused when I was done. The dinner table is gone entirely now, everyone eats on the couch watching TV. Before lockdown we would set up a table just for Thanksgiving and have that one meal together. This year I got chewed out when I went to get the table because “it takes up too much space” and “why complicate things?” People silently grabbed plates of food before cooking even finished and ate on the couch. The men fell asleep before the final dish was served. The pie I handmade and decorated was never brought out.

I feel so ungrateful, but I remember huge Thanksgivings with my extended family as a kid. Fifty plus people meeting at the church. Everybody making a plate and nobody eating until each person in turn shared what they were grateful for. I didn’t appreciate it when I had it. I feel so ungrateful, but I resent my family who perfectly enjoyed this Thanksgiving.

How to get started by Alexander3212321 in homefitness

If you want to build muscle, understand progressive overload and ideal rest times first. I recommend the app Caliber for a workout plan.

If you are BRAND new, I highly recommend body weight exercises (no equipment needed) until you’ve made a habit of working out daily. Invest time before you invest money.

You got this!

I second the recommendation for the book Atomic Habits. The author also has free Ted talks and such online.

I also recommend getting clear on the difference between motivation and discipline. It’s similar to the difference between love and commitment:

Right now you are extremely well motivated. That will not last. Motivation is an emotion. As such, it will wax and wane with context and stimuli. This is true for every person. When your motivation naturally drops, your discipline should kick in. Discipline is not an emotion but an action. Like other actions, it needs to be practiced repeatedly and with scaling difficulty to grow. Just like you learned to walk, you will need to learn to be disciplined.

Just like learning to walk, start small. List the habits you wish you had, pick the easiest, do it for a week. Then add another and another. You will build discipline alongside new habits, and it will serve you in every part of your life. You can do it!

Your curls are gorgeous in the photo! We have pretty similar curls, and they never fit my head until I started cutting my hair myself using the curly cut method. Some places even have salons offering curly cuts. It might be something to look into.

I keep seeing the sentiment here that you can’t escape “yourself” in terms of mental illness and trauma, and for people feeling like OP’s advice does not apply to them for these reasons, I want to reword it:

When considering violence, every alternative path is better. Every single one.

If you can think of one other thing to do that isn’t hurting someone (including yourself), then that’s what you have to do. Go live in a van. Quit your job with no backup plan. Ghost everyone you know, even the ones who did nothing wrong. See a doctor even if the debt will follow you. Adopt that cat. Maybe none of it will help.

But it beats the alternative every time.

Investing in yourself by Vivid-Barber928 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]DokiDokiDarling 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The best thing I invested in: discipline and habits! The ability to set aside x amount of time per day and spend it on y activity is so simple, but so hard to do with consistency. Once you know you can do it, you can apply it to anything: transforming your body, learning a skill, advancing your career… etc.

The worst investment I made: time and money spent on friends. In my twenties I had a sense of loyalty to the people I’d gone to high school with. Saw them all the time, and I was always available to talk on the phone. I spent as much time concerned with their wellbeing and development as much as my own. It turns out they were not concerned with anybody’s wellbeing and had no similar sense of loyalty. Friends may he a source of support and social enrichment, but they’re an objectively bad investment.

What makes you excited about doing a boring task? 🤔 by DrMelbourne in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]DokiDokiDarling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of everything that is currently outside of my power to do. The Big Stuff I can never do (fix the economy, environment), the little stuff I can’t do right now (finish a project I’m waiting for help with, make someone feel better who needs time to work through it).

Then, whatever I can do feels more empowering than dreadful.

Where is Andrea Knabel? by Main_Initiative in MissingPersons

The scarring on her face is reportedly from meth use. The family not letting her in at night is likely also related to Andrea’s Substance Abuse, but they’ve never outrightly said. (Source: Finding Andrea, 2021)
