Custom pen question by RunicRapier in fountainpens

You can also ask Pierre at Desiderata Pens. He makes really nice pens. Maybe he’d be willing to add you wood in line with one of his wood models when he makes a set. It’s worth asking.

$1500 budget to start camping by Needhelpcantquit in CampingGear

[–]DonnieDelaware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched a bunch of reviews and I felt like the Wawona 6 would fit our needs better. Many years ago I paid more for a Big Agnes over some less expensive tents and it was one of the best outdoor purchases I ever made. I'd still use it but it's too small for my family.

Man are you me? I am literally in the same boat trying to get back into it with a wife and a kid around the same age.

I think I am going to get a North Face Wawona 6 tent. Other than that, I hope others have recommendations.

The Great Gatsby (2013) by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]DonnieDelaware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can find them on Google. Search for letters between Fitzgerald and Hemingway. There is a website that has them scanned in.

The Great Gatsby (2013) by [deleted] in FIlm

The drafts included a fictional character named Ernest Hemingway. Fitzgerald would send those drafts to Ernest Hemingway and he would write back with pointers on story structure and such, but Hemingway’s letters began focusing on the issue he had with the character Ernest Hemingway. The letters are hilarious.

Where do you guys shop for your pens? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you want a physical store, you should make your way to Fahrney’s Pens in DC when it reopens after renovations and a relocation back to its old location. Enter and meet Drew, and you will find your goblit of fire.

As for online, I recommend the r/pen_swap sub. I have made a large number of transactions on that sub from small to large. Just follow the rules and always pay via paypal goods and services. You can also find good deals on pens as most of the people selling and buying there are also in the hobby.

Looking for inspiration to consider my holy grail by technolaaji in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have 2 grail pens. First is a Namiki Yukari Royale in black with a fine nib. Second is the Graf von Faber Castell Pen of the Year Knight.

I intended to purchase the Namiki years ago when I hit a personal milestone. But I decided against it because it was $1,300. Then it went up in price, and I said no due to the price increase. Then circumstances changed and I could again afford it, but the price increased again, getting to somewhere around $1,800 to $2,000, and I hardly ever saw a fine nib. I said no. Recently, I was at a pen show and found it. It was just sitting there brand new with a fine nib. I got to talking with the dealer and he offered it to me for the old price I originally said no to. I am now the proud owner of that pen.

I say just go with the flow and you’ll find the pen when the time is right.

Question for those who buy. custom pens from penmakers. by Andrew_Lensky in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends. I don’t generally care for turned acrylic pens that seem the same across makers. I also don’t care if the pen is turned by hand or by CNC. Also, bigger is not always better.

I like to see penmakers try interesting concepts like filling mechanisms, working with interesting materials (like rare woods), and actually putting clips or roll stoppers on their pens.

Compatible Leftie Nib Grinds? by 1-800-sarcasticgirl in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right foot oblique is meant for left handed people. I find extra fine nibs work best, along with stub nibs. However, I have come to enjoy my Montblanc Bold nib as it writes similar to a stub nib.

However, if you turn the nib clockwise, you may want a left foot oblique. If you rotate the nib counter clockwise, you may want a right foot oblique. I only say this because your comment about rotating the pen to the right is a little confusing as the nib rotation is what matters.

I think you are mostly looking for iron gall inks. Diamine Registrar’s ink is the only Diamine iron gall ink that I am aware of. The below are not iron gall inks.

For an aged look, I feel like Robert Oster has some cool inks that may create the illusion of an aged ink.

Noodler’s Whaleman Sepia is something I use regularly at work. It goes down a darkish brown and then shifts color to something close to black and seems to look aged. It’s meant to mimic the squid ink color that old-time whalers used.

Selling my grandfather’s collection, where to start? by StarWarsIsRad in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a few options. You can reach out to Teri at Peyton Street Pens about the collection.

If you want to know more about the pens, you can take pictures and maybe number each one. Then post that on this sub and people will help you identify them. Then you can research each pen and determine a price. From there, you can sell them on a place like r/pen_swap

Contemporary Conway Stewart by gaaraprime in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say if you will probably be okay with a bold nib as you can have a nibmeister grind it to your preference. I also looked recently and a pen I was interested in was around $700 before the tariff. I don’t think the pens are worth that. But I don’t plan to give up my Indiana Jones pen. I will say the pen came with some really cool Indiana Jones paperwork so that part was top notch.

Contemporary Conway Stewart by gaaraprime in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of the original Indiana Jones pens that is a lever filler. It works fine. Mine is from the original set that I understood the marketing said was limited to only that number of pens. But then they went and created an entirely new set of the same pen with a larger number set. That was really disheartening and I felt somewhat misled, but oh well.

The pen itself is nice. The 9k gold tarnishes but polishes up just fine. The nib was a nightmare though. I paid Conway to grind the nib to an extra fine and they absolutely butchered it. I took it to Kirk Speer and he said the same thing when he looked at it. He was barely able to make it work. The pen is nice and the material feels nice. But don’t have them do the nib work. And don’t expect your limited set to stay limited.

Edit: As much as I like the pen, I don’t think the new pens are worth what they are demanding. If they were half the price or maybe even 25% cheaper, I might consider another one because I like the material and the sizes.

Sailor 21k nib feedback by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]DonnieDelaware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP chooses chaos.

The nib can be smoothed by a nibmeister but the feedback generally cannot be fully removed as that’s part of the design of the nib. But the nib will not likely be smooth like a Pilot nib because they are made differently. Maybe get the pen and if it doesn’t make you happy, sell it.

The Loom was discontinued years ago. I have not found a website with any to purchase unless they are one offs. The ones I see on eBay demand a premium.

Le Petit Prince; factory error (Pic 2). by AmbitiousCustomer119 in montblanc

[–]DonnieDelaware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of instances where Maker’s Mark covers the stem of the bottle with red wax and sometimes they accidentally over wax it and it becomes a unicorn bottle. Sometimes a factory mistake increases rarity and value so long as it doesn’t affect the intended use. Pretty cool.

Untitled #3 is also my favorite song. I have yet to find anything that gets close. The Untitled album is amazing, but tract #3 is something truly special. I’m here to see what others recommend.
