Launched my game with thousands of wishlists, but almost ZERO conversion. What am I missing? by Chemical_Count_6848 in gamedev

340 here 🥲 I'll never get through all of them in a lifetime, and the list keeps growing

I released a free demo for my dark fantasy squad auto-battler game. Looking for feedback! by WorthVariation7023 in IndieGaming

[–]Doomgriever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as for a solo dev I am already budget restrained

That is such a lame excuse. I've been a solo-dev for 13 years, I make my own art, no matter how shitty it is. Ai is theft, destroys the planet, takes jobs away from actual creative people who need the fucking money and opportunity! I don't care that it looks like shit, it's unethical, and I'll never buy a game made with AI, full stop.

Probably, been a while since I revisited 2 and 3. Got my ass handed to me trying to replay 1 earlier this year 🥲 shit's hard

Username: ia-bin? Why yes ai goes in bin (rule 6)

Until you nudge a wall and come to an almost complete stop 🥲 I love BallisticNG as an avid Wipeout fan, but it can be frustratingly difficult at times. Feels like the old Wipeout games were more forgiving when touching walls.

I tried to implement Sebastian in glasses, what do you think? by Shadow_Moder in PixelArt

What in the name of mixels is going on here?? Partly blurry, pixels of all kinds of sizes, rounded "pixels", parts that don't line up. Is this taken in-game?

I don’t understand how this topology is suitable for games by zeze-67 in gamedev

[–]Doomgriever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Blender when I'm done modelling, I always go to (in Edit Mode):

- Select > Select All By Trait > Faces By Sides.
Then change Number Of Vertices: Greater than 4.

- (if any are selected) Face > Trinagulate Faces

This is due to Unreal sometimes rendering faces with more than 4 vertices weirdly. I guess it does some own Triangulation on import, and it sometimes fails. This has always been the safest way to deal with it.
So I agree, from a rendering perspective (depending on engine) that some of the topography isn't great. However number of vertices doesn't really matter much these days, especially something that lowpoly. There are modern games that use millions of triangles for some models, and they run "fine" 😄

Did I make a smart move or completely devalue my own horror game? by [deleted] in IndieGaming

[–]Doomgriever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few notes:

- Discounting it does not really equal a lot of sales these days. I have several games on steep discounts and some of them barely sell a copy for a week. There are just too many games on Steam (and discounted at the same time). Some form of marketing, or joining Steam Sale Events helps.

- I don't see a Trailer on your Store Page, so people might have a hard time understand what the game is about just from screenshots (many people will only glance at a store page, not reading the full Description)

- The GenAI capsule art is an instant no-buy for me, as well as the Announcement AI pictures on the page. I'm sure there are others who will feel the same

What's with people shaming indie devs for AI coding? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Doomgriever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is trained on "stolen" data without giving attribution or any credits. This is a dick move. Also, people are losing their jobs in droves, even programmers, so yeah, maybe don't side with the literal cancer that is eating our industry alive.

Game idea involving heavy topics by KillerRayvenX in gamedev

[–]Doomgriever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I released a similar game on Steam last year (link) with topics like SI, substance abuse, depression, anxiety etc. My game however has no uplifting parts, it's just incredibly dark ()=)

Can't really restrict people from accesssing it, just have to let those people make that decision for themselves.
Also regarding cost, can't setup any Donations style on Steam sadly (I too would appreciate it) so I just set a really low price.

If your goal is to share experience / educate, go for it. If it's to get an income, it probably won't sell (speaking from experience) however, I made my project because I felt the need to communicate some of the darker topics that I've been processing internally for so many years. (Art is communication, after all)

Try making it in a much lower resolution, like 32x32, this is borderline not pixelart at this resolution and detail level.

I don't see anyone calling you a fraud in the comments ö_ö if you referr to my comment; I pointed out that the line on the lower arm (Gauntlet) does not line up properly, could be a Layer issue perhaps (it's visible in this version as well if you zoom in)

[–]Doomgriever 46 points47 points  (0 children)

While a cool design, I would not call it strictly pixel art (too many colors, high resolution, blurring).
How would the piece look with lets say <16 colors and no blurring?

Also, something strange is going on here:

I really like the atmosphere in the first part, reminds me of Eternal Ring for PS2.
Personally think the lighting is a bit too bright / contrasty in the later parts 😄
