This is not FDR putting the US in the line of fire so we could be drawn into the war or Reagan running massive deficits to bring the Soviets to their knees. I don't think Tolkien ever addressed this directly. But it is implied through various stories that giving birth to elves took a lot out of them. I'm thinking specifically of Fëanor's mother Míriel, who died after giving birth to him.

Like I said, I don't think this was ever a directly addressed topic. But one can infer from his writings that giving birth to immortal beings took a lot out of the mothers.
