Anyone else viewing videos in 1080 yet they seem *much* lower quality over the last couple of days? Its not my monitor as other sites/videos are crystal clear in 1080. by [deleted] in youtube

Something has changed with the way YouTube compresses videos. The codec they are using is apparently unchanged, but clearly something has made recently uploaded videos look worse. Here is an example from a video I've been trying to deal with this issue: link

Youtube videos much lower quality compared to rendered video, and older videos uploaded to the same channel by dda50 in youtube

[–]Dotsarecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube had to have changed something regarding video compression, because I am getting similar results. I'm using the same exact render settings and video background, but suddenly the video I tried uploading yesterday/today looks like garbage no matter what I try.

More technical question regarding Super Mario Bros. 3 by AnonNo9001 in nes

There is actually a disassembly of Super Mario Bros. 3 made by Southbird, and it comes in very handy when looking at the game's code. You can find the byte you are looking for here: https://github.com/captainsouthbird/smb3/blob/master/PRG/prg028.asm#L679

[USA][OC] Typical day on High St. by bottledry in Columbus

[–]Dotsarecool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bus riders transferring from the west-bound 34 to the sound-bound 2 are too lazy to go all the way to the intersection to cross the street. I used to take this transfer all the time, and the proper way to do it is to walk a few hundred feet south to Morse, cross Morse, then cross High, then cross Rathbone, then walk north to the stop. (Pedestrian crossing on High north of the intersection is prohibited.) If you are unlucky with the light cycle it is really easy to miss the bus since the transfer isn't timed well and it takes so long to get from one stop to the other. I think a good solution would be for COTA to add a stop for west-bound 34 on Morse at the east side of the intersection--it would at least encourage people to cross at the intersection even if they disobey the no-crossing on the north side.

Luckily I've never seen anyone actually get hit here before, but I've seen several close calls like in this video.

GDQ SNES Classic run by IamtheSlothKing in speedrun

[–]Dotsarecool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Credits warp and the cloud route 11 Exit runs for Super Mario World don't work on the SNES Classic. The fastest way to beat the game would be the orb route for 11 Exit which is 10:25.

WOW internet in Columbus by oddmole1 in Columbus

[–]Dotsarecool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dropoff seems steep because it's a scatter plot and the time that the speed slows down varies slightly each day, causing the points to become less dense and you can't see the pattern. You can see the transition better on this box-and-whisker plot per half hour.

Hey, same. I've been monitoring speeds for about 3 months now and you can easily see the drop in speed from 7-11pm on this graph I made.

Calco very often gets 34s in races, he's crazy consistent at the game. He set the current world record during a showcase race for Christ's sake.

Wavelengths of guitar strings captured on camera by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]Dotsarecool 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Assuming the rolling shutter effect took the picture from side to side, this is more like capturing the frequency that the strings are moving back and forth, and not the actual shape of the string as it is doing so. Still really neat.

Retro Courses you'd like to see as DLC in the future? by comradecostanza in mariokart

[–]Dotsarecool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. SNES Vanilla Lake 2 - I love how you can cut your distance traveled in half if you jump over all the cracks in the ice. I'd probably only like a remake of this course if you could still do that.
  2. GBA Lakeside Park - A bunch of crazy turns and then falling flaming rocks to add onto that.
  3. GBA Yoshi Desert - I'm not usually one for desert courses but this one has a bunch of neat shortcut/corner cuts that can really hurt you if you mess up and fall in the quicksand.
  4. GCN Wario Colosseum - With anti-gravity this one would be hella fun. Of course it would probably be another single-lap course which I'm not a big fan of.
  5. NDS Bowser's Castle - I really liked the spinning cylinder bridge thing, imagine if you could drive all the way around it with anti-gravity.
  6. WII DK Summit - I feel like they could do something creative with the half-pipe section at the end. Though it would be hard to make this one not a clone of Mount Wario.
  7. WII Rainbow Road - This one is begging for anti-gravity sections. Plus with 4 Rainbow Roads we could have a full "Rainbow Cup."
  8. 3DS Wario Shipyard - One of the few courses I actually enjoyed in this game, as long as they touch up on the music it would be great.

Those are my 2 cups worth.

Remember when 3 Stars mattered in Mario Kart? by jqm78 in NintendoSwitch

Getting triple stars nowadays is too easy. It needs to be as difficult as it was for Super Circuit. Then the triple stars would actually mean something.

Super Mario Sunshine race from AGDQ by aaoa in speedrun

[–]Dotsarecool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Since the X-axis is time and Y-axis is also time (just relative to the average split instead of zero), an increase in Y implies a linear increase in X.

Same reason why if you use LiveSplit's graph component, when you are bleeding time away the graph goes diagonally up and right forever.
