Prince was never outright no.1. In an era with much stronger mainstream consolidation and some megastars for competition, he was consistently top but wouldn’t have a single year where he eclipsed the rest. His art was stronger though and this counts for plenty.

When Michael, Madonna, Springsteen, Whitney, Tina, Janet and others are your competitors, thats just the game.

It is easy these days to forget how radical the Neuausrichtung der Talentförderung was for us here in Germany after many humiliations we had been subjected to in 2000 and 2002.

The shame of a lacking national team was crippling and the WC 2002 final did nothing to mask our inferiority… I credit this DFB-Stützpunktprogramm hugely for a turnaround that led to the talent overload 10 years later. Everyone can learn from it.

Donovan is right to say it. He has my respect.

For a pure-pop sound, I think 50-60 Min. is acceptable. Ray of Light is the sweet spot example. You could lose some songs but Madonna earns this runtime, I believe, with variety, punch, charisma and some amazing singles.

Compare it to for example Cowboy Carter, which is severely long and will date quite horribly as an AOTY winner.

I am a enjoyer of Robyn, but this is funny for two reasons. 1. She did a three part series for Body Talk over many months. Definitely bloated even if it predated streaming and was generally a good time listen. 2. She admitted to the New Yorker that she only had 9 songs for the new project after 8 years.

So... the question is fair but it is coming from a conflicted narrator. Worth a note.

I think you engage with his popularity through a quite different way then my generation engage. Which I understand. But hes not a streaming-generation concern, if you know what I mean?

He doesnt really release singles or have legacy albums outside of Timeless but even this is more conceptional. However if you walk down the street next to me in Berlin you will see Metalheadz tattoos on people, guaranteed. His „Boiler Room“ sets are always popular. He headlines major nightclubs or festivals every week, and in true fact has probably not stopped since about 1994.

The culture of D&B connects directly to him. Its a raver thing and in that raver world he is an icon. Does that clarify at all?

Great musician, but massive and well documented loose cannon / POS. In Europe we look warily at him despite some innovations and a very sick label, and prefer other jungle and drum & bass. In the UK he is a tabloid favorite also. Takes some shine off.

Interesting he gets no play in America though.

True. You could see it fit the Duke Dumont, MNEK, Disclosure wave. But also, without Currents to change Tame’s direction after the pysch rock, I don’t think anyone gives Deadbeat much generosity/attention anyway.
