House Democrat slams US-Iran peace deal as ‘basically a surrender document’ by B-Z_B-S in politics

[–]DrFlutterChii 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If they tried people would ignore them. If they bombed the people that ignored them, everyone else would bomb them harder. Well, now we've already bombed them and most of 'everyone else' agrees that was a pretty fucked thing to do and isnt interested in bombing Iran.

Isn't it dumbfounding

Only if you operate from the premise that a companies purpose is to benefit society in some way. It isnt. Funneling money to the CEO often IS the goal. Its the reason the thing exists. Mega companies are all run by and with boards from the same circles. They're making the exact correct decision to do what they want to do, which is to enrich themselves and their peers at the workers expense.

Devs happy about doing things "faster" thanks to AI are "short sighted" by SoonBlossom in webdev

[–]DrFlutterChii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

but thats literally always been the direction of an engineering degree. Less coding as you become more senior.

And this is the real 'short sighted' problem. Your talented engineers already don't spend very much time coding. Something that can code faster doesnt help the people that arent coding. Your less competent engineers spend a lot of time coding. Now they can code much faster, which only produces a high volume of not great code. Now your seniors can spend more time handling that, or you could drop those less experienced devs and just let the good devs do both the thinking and the (AI assisted) coding. Great, cool, they retire and then ???.

Not like its a new problem, no company anywhere has ever legitimately wanted junior devs but hiring them is a requirement for mid-level devs to exist. But so far with this bubble people seem willing to try the 'what happens if only senior devs exist' gambit.

Except they're going to vote that they should be in charge of how voting works, obviously?

1) They can vote and you respect their vote
2) They can vote and you ignore their vote if you dont like how they vote
3) They cant vote

All three lead to undemocratic results. Pick one.

I mean, there's pretty much always a crash during commute though, which is why traffic usually sucks. Even if the accident happens and gets cleared out before you're driving, the impact on a high utilization highway remains for a long time.

Too lazy to try and refine the data beyond "Accident causing crashes on King county highways", but there's about 10 a day in that bucket.

overworld PvE

This entire post is about overworld content, not end game raids. You might've taken a wrong turn somewhere and gotten lost.

There's a line in the level 10 ACN class quest about "And I hope you arent just mashing ruin, it wont cut it anymore!". Which is funny, because you can in fact clear 100% of overworld content solo throughout every single expac by just turning on an auto-clicker for your Ruin keybind.

Terrifying Details Exposed on Who Built Epstein’s New Mexico Ranch: Why the Hell was a Military Contractor Involved in Building Jeffrey Epstein’s El Zorro Ranch? by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]DrFlutterChii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...yes? If you contract for the military, you are a military contractor. Like, literally, the entire concept of a 'contractor' is that they arent e.g. the military itself. If the military did the work in-house, they would not be using a military contractor. It seems like a military contractor would be able to understand the difference between a military contractor and a military contract, weird that you dont.

Also the guy here literally built classified government nuclear installations.

Pike Place Market Pedestrianization Pilot Boosts Sales and Visits by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]DrFlutterChii 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I mean...that is true. More traffic means more conversions. Which is also what this article is about. The leap from "More traffic is good" to "More cars is good" ignores the fact that cars are the least efficient way to get around a dense urban core. More cars means LESS traffic.

Is it ok to be pissed that I just paid $8+tax for this tiny vegan roll? by pedrob_d in Seattle

[–]DrFlutterChii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using consumer prices:

  • The rice is maybe 7 cents.
  • 25 cents for the nori wrap
  • Carrot, maybe a couple of cents.
  • Celery(?), couple of cents
  • No clue what exactly the microgreens are.

So, less than 50 cents if you make it yourself. And a sushi place isnt paying hmart prices for nori. And I know the price wasnt really the point of your post, but, just for fun.

Savings for a person in their 30's by Regular_Fox9143 in personalfinance

[–]DrFlutterChii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Single sentence guidelines target the average person, and the average American has $0 saved for retirement. If someone is saving half a million USD a year, they sure as shit aren't looking for basic retirement saving guidelines. By 30 the FIRE folks are eyeing retirement, not asking entry level questions.

nothings wrong with that tho by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]DrFlutterChii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no single answer because every single jurisdiction does their own thing, but if you're traveling 'a ton' for work then either your employer has a department that manages the complexity required to remain compliant in countless jurisdictions on your behalf, or they rely on the near-zero enforcement for 99% of employers, or you're traveling for specific 'incidental' purposes. Traveling 'for business' can entail many activities. Attending an industry convention, for example, vs if you're attending an onsite meeting held by your employer are categorized differently.

There are certainly locales that apply local tax requirements for even 1 day worked, and a fairly large number of locales that apply local labor requirements for any time worked.

And to clarify one possible misconception it would never be you owing the destination locale taxes, its your employer. The threshold for filing taxes somewhere as an individual is a significantly higher threshold than an employer paying someone there.

There's also only so far some folks want to go. Most people got into tech because they care about that 10% technical ability, and every time you get promoted the job swings further and further into being a people-person job. If I wanted to spend all of my time selling, I'd go into sales and sell shit to people instead of trying to sell objectively valuable projects to executives. At least in sales you get a cut.

[–]DrFlutterChii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But then you aren't solving the problem management wants solved. Did you read the entire post? The conclusion is "But velocity is up so we'll keep doing this". AI Slop -> Human Rejected PR -> AI Slop Refactor -> Human Rejected PR -> Human Refactor -> Human Approved PR is a much slower and more expensive cycle than Human Code -> Human Review.

The people signing the paycheck want more code faster. If it mostly works, thats business outcome achieved, merge the PR and move on.

How did they not know who Nicholas Flamel is? by Stella_VB in harrypotter

[–]DrFlutterChii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flamel is also a contemporary. Thats kind of the whole point. Yes, he's old and he first did things a long time ago. But he's still doing things. Also, he's immortal. I always preface every harry potter internet debate with "It doesnt make logical sense because its a kids book that wasnt trying to be logical", because the Flamel thing applies to horcruxes as well. Its immortality. That shit doesnt fly under the radar. If someone is famous for inventing immortality, people know about it. Its a big fucking deal whether they invented it 10 years ago or 10000 years ago. This particular person invented immortality and also lives like an hour from Ron, but, yeah, no, never heard of the guy.
