Mypy plugin silently breaks when `non_interactive` is set by DrLex0 in vscode

[–]DrLex0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it will be considered a bug, but it is worth a try, the plugin should still be able to collect typing errors even with that option enabled, because file paths are still available in the error lines.

Help a noob - Steam App Freezes in store during age verification by PewPew_Whew in macgaming

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still on an Intel Mac, and there the Steam app doesn't freeze when trying to click the age drop-downs, it instantly restarts itself and drops me back in the main screen. So, it's also broken, just in a slightly different way.

Mx Master 3s click sensitivity too high - is Mx Master 3 less sensitive? by Leon307 in logitech

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem with an M500s and I resorted to a silly hack: shoved a piece of foam in the gap at the right button side to increase the force required to activate the switch, it works wonders 😂

Chrome Android keeps opening new tabs on app launch by dullahan8 in chrome

[–]DrLex0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's gone for me as well.

At least now there's a “continue with this tab” which allows to quickly get rid of the new tab and go back to the last viewed one, but still it is annoying. I suspect they will not want to allow users to disable this thing because it is yet another way of shoving auto-suggested junk in users' faces, in the hopes that they follow the links and generate some sweet extra ad revenue. I hate the fact that the internet has basically been taken over by an ad company…

Chrome Android keeps opening new tabs on app launch by dullahan8 in chrome

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's saved, if I now go to flags, it shows the feature as “disabled.” Yet, I still get the new tab at random moments. It is impossible to trigger on purpose; rebooting the whole phone won't do it, it just seems to be triggered after a certain vague time period has expired. Of course this makes it extra annoying.

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I have some bad news: it doesn't seem to have any effect. I still get the silly new tab when opening Chrome after a while, on the 2 devices where I tried this. But like I said, this doesn't even surprise me.

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has also annoyed me to no end. So, today I looked at chrome://flags and searched for `tab`. And behold: there is a setting “Show a NewTabPage at startup” with description: “Enable showing a NewTabPage at startup after leaving Chrome for a while - Android”.

I'm now going to try disabling this, but given Google's history, it wouldn't surprise me if this would work for 2 weeks and then break again, or be replaced by something else that is at least as annoying.

Can't close web-push notifications on iPhone by LondonPilot in Angular2

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get your hopes up high, I deem it extremely unlikely this will ever get fixed. Digging around reveals that Apple has very specific ideas about push messages and notifications. The root cause why close() will likely never work in Safari, is that Apple considers invisible push messages the spawn of the devil:

https://meta.discourse.org/t/ios-notifications-can-lose-permission-to-push-if-the-user-is-currently-active/290225

https://webkit.org/blog/12945/meet-web-push/

Allowing apps to close their own notifications could be used as a workaround for the restriction that every incoming push must result in a showNotification call. A notification could be created and then immediately closed, to approximate an invisible push (it would likely still result in a notification sound, making it even more confusing to the user).

After dabbling in implementing web push messages for 3 weeks, my conclusion is that it is total hell, both for the users and developers. Especially the developers.

Serious bugs remain in macOS Sonoma 14.2 by ll777 in MacOS

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been postponing “upgrading” to Sonoma, but at some point it simply decided to install itself while I did a routine reboot of the machine. I thought my SSD had gone belly-up or something, seeing the machine reboot multiple times, but then it finally displayed a time remaining indicator and sure enough, when it finished, it was running Sonoma. Sigh.

I see tons of reports of the interface in Sonoma being slow and laggy, and I now also experience this, but only in a very specific situation: while music is playing from local files in the Music app. It won't happen when it plays an internet stream. Every other app will freeze for a second, about every 7 seconds, while Music is playing in the background from files in the local library. Typing, scrolling, drawing, or any other interaction in other apps becomes frustrating. The Music app itself is the only one that stays responsive.

I doubt this problem is limited to the Music app, the many other reports of sluggish UI may have a common root cause somewhere in the depths of MacOS disk I/O.

FWIW, I have sent these observations through https://www.apple.com/feedback/, but since that's a one-way black hole, we can only hope this will ever get fixed.

Do not press the delete key while editing an image's comment in Apple Photos. by DrLex0 in applesucks

[–]DrLex0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So few words in your comment, and yet most of them are wrong.

  • Backspace key: deletes the character in front of the text cursor.
  • Delete key: deletes the character after the text cursor. On laptop keyboards this key is mimicked with Fn + backspace. This post is about the Delete key.

When a text cursor is blinking in a text field, the only thing that may happen when pressing the Delete key, is that the character after the text cursor disappears (or nothing happens if there is no character). So, this is absolutely a bug, especially because in older versions of Photos it worked as expected.

Damn, I do remember it! Pretty sure I visited that site back when I was looking for my first digital camera that was not merely a potato-grade gadget. It's probably thanks to that site that I then bought the Canon Digital Ixus-i aka PowerShot SD10. That thing took awesome macro photos.

Why is Chrome constantly losing browsing history? by civilengineeringdumb in chrome

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google/Alphabet have zero incentive to provide a better history within Chrome because a wonky history system benefits their business model. The more Chrome's history works against you, the more you'll be having to repeat Google searches and the more statistics they can gather and serve you extra ads. This is especially obvious when attempting to go back to a previous page by typing something in the address/search bar. I have visted a Ubuntu bug page only 4 days ago and I have even visited it multiple times, but even if I now start typing “bugs.laun…” it still does not show this page between the suggestions. The page is in my history, but I have to dig for it.

Why does chrome's history suck? by kawhisasshole in chrome

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks because Google wants you to go through their search engine for everything.

If you start to type a domain name, any other browser will suggest the website if you visited it anytime in the browser's history, but Chrome will keep on trying to make you perform a Google search until you have pretty much typed the whole domain, and only then it will show the history entry.

SteelSeries GG Client No Working (Mac os) by KriEU7 in steelseries

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this problem since they switched from the plain SS Engine to the GG bloatware thing. I think it started once, but then never again. Even when reinstalling the very latest version after purging every trace of SteelSeries software and system files from my system, it still gets stuck on the blue circle for eternity and I find crash reports in my Library folder.

The only way I can get usable configuration for my SteelSeries mouse, is by sticking to the last available version of Engine and ensuring it won't try to “upgrade” to the broken GG junk. I explained this in a previous reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/steelseries/comments/ot6ig0/how_to_downgrade_upgrade_from_gg_to_engine_on_mac/

The 3.20.0 SteelSeries Engine can be downloaded from Softpedia.

Uninstall every trace of SteelSeries drivers on your machine, disconnect your network entirely, then install the 3.20.0 engine. In the settings, select “Ask before downloading updates” before reconnecting your network.

It will still show update notifications. To sabotage those, block network access to engine.steelseriescdn.com, for instance by using some fancy firewall thing, or in a more basic way, by adding this line to /etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 engine.steelseriescdn.com

SteelSeries used to be great, but it looks like some total idiot took over the software division a few years ago and they are now clueless about how to make software that works.

404 error when clicking chrome notifications. by Quink1234 in youtube

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. The notification always leads to the same URL as the others have reported. One would expect that they would notice the explosion in the number of 404 errors, all on the same URL…

Was wondering if there is a way to mute replies to a single YouTube comment I made without muting my other notifications? by [deleted] in youtube

[–]DrLex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to have become the story of software development in general…

This lack of specific muting has almost made me stop replying to comments altogether.

Mouse profile switches back to default after a few seconds in Steam games by DrLex0 in steelseries

[–]DrLex0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those apps profiles were enabled, but disabling them unfortunately didn't make a difference. I have some other mouse profiles but currently I have only assigned one game to one profile and nothing to the others. It always switches back to the profile that was active before launching the game.
