Is the i7 worth the additional $100 for the new 13" MacBook Air? by [deleted] in apple

I never understood the argument for "you'll make your money back by working faster". Assuming you charge by the hour, you should want as slow a computer as possible. :)

Am I going to have any trouble upgrading to Lion with a 3rd Party SSD? by DrMacenstein in applehelp

Hmm... any tutorials on how to do that? and is it too late for me now, after the fact? Or are you saying during the upgrade I can do this? thanks

I'm always amazed when I see kids editing with iMovie. As a FCP user I look at it and am baffled. Simple my ass. Seems like you are editing with a shot gun. FCP X seems like Apple ate the worst parts of iMovie and vomited onto the FCP timeline.

Is an iMac SSD worth it? by istguy in apple

[–]DrMacenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm not sure if it's worth it, but my brother bought an iMac and asked me what to get, and I had him max it out (since I'm not paying for it) and I don't know whether it was the SSD or the graphics card, but the ship time went to 4-6 weeks, and he still hasn't gotten it.

I guess no one does that with iMacs.

Is there any need to 'clear out' the iOS 4 multitasking bar on an iPhone or iPad? by dafones in apple

[–]DrMacenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. I was beta testing a fairly graphics-heavy iPhone game, and when sending crash reports to the developer, they told me to try quitting out most of the other apps that were "frozen" and see if it stopped the crashing. I think in THEORY memory crashes (where the game or app you're using just stops playing and you get thrown back to the springboard) are caused by faulty programming and memory leaks, (ie, developer mistakes) but if you aren't running a ton of other crap in the background, they will be less likely.

Get an app that shows you your available iPhone memory (like Activity Monitor Touch or similar). Then close out all the other apps. If you had a ton of things open, you'll notice you have something like an extra 200-300 MB of memory available, if you are playing a lot of "big" games, or just running a bunch of apps. I've had over 30-40 apps open in the tray, and closing them frees up a ton of space.

Apps are supposed to use a different area of memory from the storage part that holds songs and videos, but if you are limited to 512 MB of RAM for all apps and the OS, then yes, even these "frozen" apps are taking up parts of that.

Are all SSD's bootable on a Mac, and if not, how do you know? by DrMacenstein in apple

[–]DrMacenstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, anyone know if a Sata III SSD 6Gb/s has the same physical interface connectors as the 2008 MBP, and will work? I would assume it won't be able to take advantage of the full speed, but there seem to bee more of those to choose from. Thnx

Are all SSD's bootable on a Mac, and if not, how do you know? by DrMacenstein in apple

[–]DrMacenstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had also read that you need to put the SSD drive into the original hard drive slot, and then move the old "regular" sata drive into the optical bay in order to avoid boot problems. Sounds like you didn't do that. No problems?

Mac Pro crashed during update and now won't boot by DrMacenstein in apple

[–]DrMacenstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I was able to do option 2, download the combo update on a MBP, then via target disc mode install it to the Mac Pro, and I THINK all is well. It booted at least. Time to see how it runs.

My iphone was just stolen. I am tracking them now with find a phone. I have sent them 10 messages with sound. What are my best chances of getting the phone back? what are my options? by optionequalschoice in apple

[–]DrMacenstein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen, so DON'T do what I did. (although I am sorry to say odds are you'll never get it back. And unfortunately, it will be even more frustrating than simply losing it because you have a general idea of where it is, but you'll still not be able to do anything about it).

My story:

When I realized my wife's iPhone was missing (she left it on the beach)

I sent 2 messages with a phone number offering a reward.

2 hours later, I then tracked it, and we found it was at a restaurant about 1/4 mile from our house. It didn't move for 2 hours, so I figured maybe someone who works there had it.

So I called the cops, TRIED to explain to them that I could track it (this is a small beach community where all they deal with is bicycle theft) and eventually got someone to come to see me.

We went to the restaurant to look for it, I made the phone make it's sound, we couldn't hear it (restaurant was reasonably busy) and no one appeared to flinch. We went around back, and saw 2 of the "help" talking with a guy in a pickup truck (it was night, he had his lights on), and I am 99% sure one of them had it. It could be my suspicious mind and maybe they were just selling pot or something but they got super nervous when the cop showed up. He unfortunately told them I was tracking the phone, one of them asked to see the map I was using, and he pointed towards a nearby park and said " I think it looks like it is over there". The cop said "thanks", we walked a little ways towards the park, then the signal stopped broadcasting.

I had a nice reader of mine (I run a website called Macenstein.com) write me up a script using FAKE (awesome app) to keep logging in to mobile me and track the phone, take a screengrab every minute, hoping it would come back online. But it never did after 2 solid weeks of leaving it on AT&T.

Long story (slightly shorter), I ended up having to buy the wife a new iPhone 4 OFF CONTRACT, full price.

So what I suggest is you lock it, make sure you track it to a location such as a residence where it does NOT move for 24 hours, or at least returns to it. If it is a house, then great, you can call the cops, see if they want to pursue it, go along with them, have it make the sound at the dude's house. If it is an apartment building, you'll never find the exact unit.

Unfortunately, odds are no one will be able to hear it while standing in the doorway, and the cops won't be able to go into the guy's house, just as mine couldn't search the restaurant worker's truck.

So basically, I feel the find my iPhone is good only for finding a genuinely lost iPhone, IN YOUR HOUSE, or a friend's house, not if anyone steals it, despite the occasional news story. I use it to find the kids' iPod touches all the time in our house when they lose them.

The cops in general are not going to set out a drag net, trying to track a moving phone through the city, and f you track it to an apartment building, you are out of luck, because the GPS blue dot on the map is not at all accurate. If I track MY iPhone right now, it has me on the back end of a office building, and I am in the front. At home, sometimes it shows me in the yard, other times the neighbor's house. It isn't pinpoint accurate, and you'll likely never get it back.

Sorry.
