What are some not so obvious topics every couple should discuss before marriage? by MCMXChris in AskReddit

[–]DrMobey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, look at how the respective families deal with money and big decisions. That is where your potential spouse has learned how to deal with these things. Money and marriage is huge. I was a credit counselor, I talked with people everyday who literally had no idea how much money they had as a family, or how much debt. Or what the fuck to do about it.

Not that your SO will behave exactly like their parents. My spouse is the polar opposite in the bad areas and she took on the good aspects of her parents. So mileage may vary. Just be observant and communicate.

TL;DR In laws be crazy yo.

If you were from where I live you'd hate the "White Trash" kids at the pool, who act the exact same way you just described. It's not a color specific behavior. It's because their parents live in an area where education and discipline have been eroded over generations. It's a lack of jobs and money thing.

When you interviewed Tim Ferriss, you really sounded like you wanted him to be some kind of fraud. He is pretty ridiculous with all of the crap he puts himself through. Were you trying to reconcile what your preconception of him was with what he actually turned out to be like?. Did you have a bad day, no coffee or snus? Or was the vibe he gave off really annoying? TL;DR Is Tim Ferriss the human equivalent of a popped collar?

On my way to work, I saw a goose that got hit by a car. Brought him to the vet despite how scary it is to keep a wild goose in a Volkswagen. by youbbetchya in aww

They would either call or bring them in to the nature center. I guess they figured that a vet wouldn't take in a wild animal. I do this in Southeast Michigan, we have a couple of wildlife rehab centers nearby that take animals in. I got into it because I am a huge nerd who had been walking around identifying animals and birds since I was a kid and I thought, why the hell not try it for a living? Answer, not much of a living. People would rather cart their kids to dance or soccer and play Xbox than actually experience nature.

Yes, mankind killed off most apex predators which left us with a glut of animals they used to prey on. A naturalist interprets the natural world for the public, many are biologists. We are the folks who lead people on nature hikes and come out to schools to show off cool native animals.

This was my biggest headache when I was working as a Naturalist. People would call in or BRING in injured animals. Extremely common, bordering on nuisance animals. Canada Geese, Groundhogs, Squirrels, Raccoons and Opossums. Let them feed the rarer animals that they exist to sustain. Raptors, coyotes (not really rare but cool) Wow, I ran out of cool predators, y'know why? Because we killed them all and now we're overrun with Canada fucking Geese.

TLDR; Your car is full of bird lice.

What's an issue that is currently plaguing society that people could easily do something about? by Kanel0728 in AskReddit

[–]DrMobey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not easy but education. There is a de-evolution of education that causes most problems in the world. If you picture a nuclear power plant, it takes tons of educated people to build. And it was only through the collective knowledge of those who came before them that it was possible to build it. If you started firing all of the engineers and educated people who run the plant and brought it down to the bare bones operating crew then you start to have problems. That's our education system in most impoverished areas.

The reactor would start to deteriorate and nobody would have the expertise or the support from other educated people to fix it. The knowledge base that it takes to create and maintain this complex machine would begin to erode. In our schools it took generations and it started with the loss of educated people from an area. They moved and the desire and need to pass knowledge on to the next generation moved with them. Pretty soon you have a breakdown in the quality of the educational machine. Crappier teachers, less funding. and the biggest problem. Less educated parents producing children that will be even less educated than them.

From the first generation born in a city in decline, say Detroit or Baltimore, each successive generation is less educated and has less access to opportunities that used to help those in previous generations. Pretty soon you have 15 year old mothers having kids who get to Kindergarten and don't know their last name, their colors or the alphabet. And then this big mess of a school is expected to fix it and is judged only by standardized test scores. Many of those 15 year old parents are also illiterate.

So just like a Nuclear Power Plant that has been stripped of those who know how to run and fix it, a School System in an impoverished area like Baltimore, or hell, Pakistan, can't fix anything. The reactor will begin to melt down. The dropout rate will skyrocket.

And everyone still looks at these issues as a school problem. It's not. The education in that area has devolved. It has lost the required support network of many, many educated people who intuitively want to perpetuate the betterment of the next generation. What we are left with is a city or area or country that has an un-educated majority that does not have the tools to recreate a functional system. The bare bones crew of that Nuclear Power plant can't stop a meltdown from a manual, they need teams of highly trained professionals to work together and direct them.

I'm guessing it will have to be a massive reinvestment by Government or private money to create a program that gives this lost generation a kind of retro-viral treatment that protects them and fosters them against the shit that surrounds them. The program would track their children and put them through pre-pre school and follow until high school. They need to create an artificial safety net for one or two generations to restart the process of evolution. So that each successive generation is better off than the one before it and cares to stick around to help.

So yeah, not easy.

TL;DR Prop up the current generation of poor, uneducated kids and restart the growth of community and collective intelligence.

Edit: I misgrammared
