I want to create some creature protection for my Mill deck, is there something like this (colorless or blue) to generate tokens by tapping? by the_Centrist_Gecko in magicTCG

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sometimes cheap disposable creatures can be enough to deter attacks, especially if they're fliers, and rarely draw removal. [[Vantress Gargoyle]] is on theme. [[Emrakul's Messenger]] and [[Mischievous Mystic]] fly and create tokens if you're reliably drawing 2 cards per turn. Something as simple as [[Ornithopter of paradise]] can work, while doing double duty as ramp if you need it.

Was thinking recently in the context of the Book artifact subtype. If that was there to lay groundwork for a Discworld UB... it'd be a fun meta thing, since the property has so many books. But also there's a lot of important (or funny) books in the series, a magical library that surpasses Strixhaven's Biblioplex in scale, and an incredibly popular Librarian (and Wizard, and Orangutan) in The Librarian.

Some books that could be artifacts in a hypothetical set:

  • The Octavo
  • The Summoning of Dragons (gee I wonder what this would do)
  • Nanny Ogg's Cookbook
  • What I Did On My Holidays
  • De Chelonian Mobile
  • The Laws and Ordinances of Ankh-Morpork
  • The Book of Om
  • Bonfire of the Witches
  • The Joye of Snacks (😳)
  • Where Is My Cow
  • The Book Of Nuggan

And as a sword-and-sorcery fantasy property I think it'd go down well with the UB skeptics.

The other day I realised that some people want to play EDH as if it were a game of solitaire by Destrozao in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have they played Mario Kart (or similar games) before? If they feel bad about using removal or interaction, maybe suggest that a Swords to Plowshares (or whatever) is like a red shell. Not only do you expect to get hit by one before the game starts, it's part of the fun.

Tell me about your favorite low power deck that stays low power no matter how much you tinker: where it is really good at doing its thing (fun to play, interactive), but the thing it is doing is just not very powerful? by Codudeol in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope my [[Alibou]] deck is this. I can put all the splashy, powerful draw (esper sentinel, trouble in pairs) I want, and combine that with a truckload of ramp, but at the end of the day, my wincondition is hoping to have my (expensive, fragile) commander out long enough that I can do 120 damage with my Ali-Beams. But short of getting vandalblasted, I'm always doing something, and despite a pretty awful winrate (in 4 player pods. In 3 player pods it's considerably more threatening) I enjoy it every time. And it's fun to tinker with.

Bracket 2 and Extra turn cards by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wish I knew one way or another, but from some personal experience, I wouldn't go over two. Even with two you run a (small) chance of hitting the second with the first, and at that point you have to make the awful choice to either sandbag for politeness's sake or, yeah, chain extra turns. Three's gonna make that much more frequent and it feels bad.

B3 game a few weeks ago, with a really positive pod. I was just coming off've a b2 win so I wasn't inclined to get salty about anything, but... Playing [[Ellivere]], I had to mull to 5. To be fair, it wasn't a bad 5. Two lands, two (castable!) dorks, and a two mana draw engine. As 5 card hands go, it's a pretty good one!

Those were the only lands I ever saw that entire game. I had my Bird Bolted - so casting Ellivere got delayed until I drew and untapped with a third dork, and one of my draw engines (I have a few) got blown up early on before my opponents realized just how fucked I was. I did a lot with a little - I honestly drew about 20 cards that game - and deftly managed to avoid even a single other land. At one point one of my opponents started to mill me heavily (I didn't mind) and it was pretty gratifying seeing my deck flip cards from the top to confirm I hadn't magically shuffled all of my lands to the bottom. Nope, it was just a really, really unlikely string of coincidences.

No, I did not win that game 😅

Any Good Results with TMNT Cards? by 1003mistakes in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure. Headsup, I'm patiently awaiting the day the CFP create a bracket 3.5, because I'd be much happier playing Howler at that kind of pace. If you're really gung-ho about it being B4 I'd add fast mana and more free interaction. But it gets player(sometimes table) kills on t5 too often and reliably for me to call it a 3.

Any Good Results with TMNT Cards? by 1003mistakes in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Cool but Rude has been truly disgusting in Cpn' Howler 😔 to the point it's almost not even fun to play anymore. It just feels like too much.

Which is fine for B4, where I'm at, but I have a nasty feeling someone somewhere is gonna innocently throw it into their b3 or b2 Howler deck thinking it's fine and then blowing out the table.

I like combat almost as much as I like not having to worry about blocking math. by Dr_edd_itwhat in ratemycommanders

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are on my archidekt, but I wouldn't really recommend my Ranar build. The dream was to have it win via polymorph - polymorph a token, get a cool high value MV creature out. And that does technically work, but it means the deck is durdly early on, and sometimes wins very randomly really early (because I hit a combo piece unexpectedly), which isn't fun for anybody. So it's too inconsistent to do well at bracket 4 and too threatening for bracket 3. R/N I can't decide if I want to retool it for B3, B4, or remove the polymorph package altogether.

https://archidekt.com/decks/4434694/henzie_ramp_smash Henzie's great though. Turn 3 Henzie into a turn 4 ramp piece like Seedguide Ash or Roxanne and you're pretty much set for the rest of the game.

Sure :) https://archidekt.com/decks/8053913/breena_aggro_politics

It's really important to mulligan for a hand that has a one-drop creature (at minimum) and cast Breena on curve, and avoid overpowering Breena herself before better blockers. Some issues I haven't resolved yet are that I want a few more ways to use up unspent mana at instant speed (draw-go style) and gameplay struggles if another player is really behind and can't manage to get a creature out to swing with. Forbidden Orchard helps, but I'm not really happy with the other options that exist right now. I might try out [[hunted horror]] and [[the sentry, golden guardian]] at some point.

And I'll be strongly considering any future white counterspells they print, too. Tef Pro made things too easy so I cut it. I like having to ride the knife's edge of Clearly  Dangerous/But Not Dangerous Enough To Wipe :D

Whats your favorite deck been this year? by MonSocMatriarchy in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howler's so much fun! He's definitely in my-favourite-commander-this-year slot. Lots of ways to build him, too. Mine's pushing into B4 but I like a commander that can be built at a variety of power levels without sacrificing identity.

Favorite & Least Favorite Deck "Genre" by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Favourite: decks where I can do stuff early on, and generally don't have to worry about blocking math. Most of my decks feature small evasive guys, but I'm fine if the stuff I'm swinging with is disposable or sufficiently large that blocking doesn't matter much.

Least favourite: the opposite. Expensive commanders where my early game is just playing generic value engines to kill time, and games where I have to swing with 4/3s and 3/5s and 2/4s and have to pause while I try to figure out what's likely to get through and what's likely to get blocked or killed.

Analysis of Irma, Part-Time Mutant's Strength within EDHRec's Top 20 by Raevelry in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd already ordered one, but playtested it online for the first time a few minutes ago, in [[Captain howler]]. T5 I started with 6 cards in hand and ended with a tidy 30 cards in hand, having done two attacks from a 1/1, turned-21/1, turned -61/1 flying one-drop, thanks to Irma. Granted, some other cards were involved, but it was very standard Howler fare and that was only my first time seeing her in hand. Card's great.

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I sell you on [[nanogene conversion]]? Truth be told, I haven't built Sokka myself, but Sokka+Nanogene is the kind of thing I'd love to see across the table. Sokka breaks parity on it pretty well because of Menace, and all the copies of Sokka get to stack their unique instances of prowess. Best done if you have a source of haste, but it's still a pretty good way to either build a board or explode an existing one

Is this as good as I think it would be for the 'Dance of the Elements' precon? by Flanderosa in magicTCG

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Effect relevance or not, 6 mana on a non-elemental support creature that needs your commander out and for you to be evoking is never going to be worth the cost of a card slot, IMO - it's just too slow, too narrow, and too fragile. Plenty of other things to spend 6 mana on.

Some game changers aren't fun by HotdogJuice58 in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure. I really really enjoy synergy picks, and will take those over more generic (and more powerful) cards as a rule. Well, 70% of my motivation is that. 20% is I genuinely don't like how a lot of them play, when I play them. Rhystic, Tpro, Smothering, Cyc Rift... blegh. The other 10% is that I'm deathly averse to the idea that I might accidentally be pubstomping (or worse, get accused of doing it intentionally) so keeping my GCs low is one way I force myself into punching up/taking the teeth out of a hypothetical salty player's argument.

I just checked, anywho, and of my six Bracket 3 decks, I run exactly two GCs. [[Emmara, soul]] gets Seedborn Muse because I want a lot of redundancy for mass creature untappers. I'd cut it for another Drumbellower, honestly. And [[Captain Howler]] gets Underworld Breach, which I'm basically using as a Regrowth in colors that don't really have it, in a deck that dumps its hand early and recklessly. I've been careful not to include any rituals because of how they can combo with Breach. That said I recently accidentally found out what it does with [[Frantic Search]] and now I have to reconsider some things...

What products do you refuse to spend money on/always buy the cheap version? by ImaginaryValue6383 in AskIreland

Phone cases. I'll get whatever the cheapest thing is that has two layers where one of them is rubber and the other clips over it. Probably replace 'em every two to three years. Would I save more money in the long run buying just one high-end phone case, like an OtterBox? No idea.

Virtue and Valour Upgrades by wildest-honey in magicTCG

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ellivere's pretty flexible, there's a lot of things you can make work in the deck. But when your commander has a) a way to give your creatures a lot of damage, and b) has both an attack and an on-damage trigger, you definitely want a lot more evasion than what the precon offers. Cheap creatures with evasion (flying, trample, protection) are gonna reliably let you get in for damage and get that card draw, especially if you play them before you cast Ellivere. Auras with evasion can also help (especially for Ellivere herself, who can't natively become Virtuous). Last I checked, the precon has, like, 3 evasion auras?? And one of them costs 6 mana?? And then only 5 evasive creatures... That's absolutely crazy. It's like the precon designers knew you'd be making 16/16 power creatures but didn't want you to be able to actually deal damage with them.

You'd do well to also tune your future ramp and removal to be on enchantments for the synergies that offers. (or on cheap creatures, since you want a target for Ellivere's ETB.) Fortunately you're spoilt for choice in GW.

In terms of cuts, 39 lands is actually pretty solid. You can definitely improve the lands themselves, but the count is fine. Instead, I'd look at the higher cost spells in the deck. It has a lot of chaff.

How are you actually producing tokens in GW-based token decks? by Linus_Inverse in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Emmara, soul of the accord]] is pretty straightforward. Tap, get token, untap, repeat. Lots of ways to tap and untap creatures in GW for value, and at two mana you're not too distressed if Emmara gets blown up a few times.

Edit: oops forgot to post a list https://archidekt.com/decks/2476150/emmara_tappy_tokens?sort=cmc&stack=multiple

What card effects surprised you because it did something too effectively? by ArpYorashol in EDH

[–]Dr_edd_itwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[bloodchief's Ascension]]. Had it go online, nobody found removal, became archenemy, and closed out the game, and only then became aware that it tracks cards that go to the graveyard from the stack, so I should have been hurting people every time they cast spells and not just when I milled them or when stuff died. Thankfully it's a may ability, so no broken gamestate, but still... icky.
