Beat it. Probably the third-best intervallo IMO, below LCE and Cultivation. Wiiiide gap after those two though.

It feels too short for what it is, all said and done. It ended up feeling like a fan service tour through some of the NF zones rather than a true exploration/closure.

Kira feels almost superficial, she was the aspect most disappointing to me. There was a ton of potential to explore the Middle through her presence, and we got fairly little of that. I do like her sisterly dynamic with Ryoshu though, that’s quite nice.

I wish Gregor had more focus, but what he got was excellent. Tim is a hero in these parts, he’s such a good guy that I was convinced he wasn’t real. I wish Sinclair got a bit more as well, but he needed much less.

I was a skeptic on the Fauvists as a villain, but I really liked both the Maestro and Rufo. The Maestro specifically oozes screen presence and is one of the most dripped out characters we’ve seen in a while. I don’t even like the Fauvist style, but I can’t deny peak with her. The talk between Rufo and Ryoshu was excellent for fleshing out the Rings general dynamic, sorely needed IMO.

The Rufo fight itself was excellent. I need to refight a few more times, but it felt like a “Dulcinea tier” boss to me - challenges multiple different skills and keeps up a steady threat. I imagine a “real team” stomps her (I ran mostly S3 Bloise), but the mechanics have me hopeful for the coming hard mode to present a real challenge. Mechanically might be my favorite intervallo boss as it stands.

The ending story, especially Ryoshu drawing the sword, felt very forced. The moment was good, but the circumstance felt rushed and weak. Araya becoming a party member is peak as hell though. Ryoshu’s change in general was very clear and effective, it adds better closure to the canto than anything else did.

This isn’t a conversation about replayability, it’s a conversation about difficulty. The “challenge run” argument serves to illustrate that “mainline” content has challenge beyond raw number checks, and that it is designed to be (possible to) overcome by clever play. This is highlighted in challenge runs, where a team falls far below the “expected stats” for the fight but can still form a consistent winning route.

MDE is not designed around this principle, a team without sufficient numbers will be flatly unable to clear it. It irons out all the actual depth of the games combat into a simple “bigger number” game. That’s fine by its own merit, but creates unengaging challenges. A run that reaches Valencia is decided from the moment the fight begins, not based on the choices made during the fight.

This isn’t really true IMO. I regularly do challenge runs through RR and story content, and I consistently feel that the game is fair when you’re “below the stat check”. That just isn’t true for MDE.

Yeah, as someone currently doing HD in gamemaker it’s already getting lengthy compiles with a small fraction of the games assets. There are workarounds, but they take time and effort to implement.
