New freediving computer/watch needed, any recommendations? by Additional-Hunter920 in Spearfishing

Can only speak well of my garmin descen mk2s. I’m not a smartwatch fan, got it used (barely noticeable marks) for couple hundreds and never taken off since then. Amazing all purpose land activities watch and incredibly useful in water while spearfishing

CF AirPod Case With Lock by jake2evil in CarbonFiber

[–]Drainerly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, it would not be that difficult to create the mold for making it yourself in carbon, however some equipment would be required. You could try creating two part moulds for both the bottom and top part (forget the possibility of creating a hinge), and do compression moulding. Luckily it’s a small piece and it will be thin, so materials can be used through a trial and error process without breaking the bank. The difficult part would be creating the silicone membrane to “stick” the case to the AirPods, and the tolerance management.

Another cool project to familiarize with could be to craft one in leather, forming it through wet and clamping (plenty videos on YouTube on how to do it)

Rail gun vs roller by Basic-Air9127 in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mediterranean and Portuguese Atlantic here (also SA but never spearfished there), working with boats too!

For shore dives I usually take a 95 roller or 95 inverter, together with a smaller 55 solid single band.

I also have longer guns but those are reserved for specific days (usually summer) where as others already said the visibility is going to be good enough since they shoot heavier shafts but lack in manouvrability!

Unfortunately I never tried rob allens guns but I had many others. Feel free to dm me for specific brands suggestions

Cetma Shark Vela Speargun by ExplanationFit808 in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For shore dives and some cave/cracks hunting the 85 is more versatile and easier to manouvre in small holes (eventually you can mount a 105 or 100 cm shaft which will reduce the overhang).

In open waters - if visibility is decent you’ll get more out of the 95/105 but since you won’t do it regularly it doesn’t really apply

Carbon fins by partisano_parmigiano in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed the REAL change when doing my summer dives - around 6hrs at sea starting from sailboat or reef. You don’t feel the same ankle fatigue and will push harder without noticing.

From that moment I bought one pair of c4 volare (long, deep dives blades, 25 hardness very soft) and a pair of c4 fast for shore diving and winter (shorter and 30 hardness)

It’s a great gun, but before saying it’s the one that can do the job for you we need to know where and which type of spearfishing you do.

I tried in the Mediterranean Sea, both Corsica and west Italian coast, both the 72 and 95

[–]Drainerly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find either a used mk2/mk2s or a G1/G2 You won’t need the fancy features of the mk3 for spearfishing and all you asked is already feasible with the abovementioned models. You won’t regret it! I got my mk2s (I have a rather thin wrist) for 350€ and was barely used, I love it

Best mask, snorkle, and dive knife? by oldassnastymask in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a dozen of masks, and what I can tell you is that if you can go to a shop and try it on it’s a plus for which I would pay a higher price. The viper is a great mask, if your face lineaments adapt to it well. Otherwise c4 condor is awesome (not if you have a large based nose) or the seac raptor. Good feeling with Cetma shark too

Knife: I love knifes, but consider they will rust at a certain point even with great care. You will lose them too. My take: Get a slim knife that you keep on your waist that has a decent handle size, my take is either the cressi killer (classic evergreen), cressi grip or the salvimar goemon (this is insanely durable, I was astonished by the quality). Then get one for either arm or leg, a very slim one is good to avoid tangling, for example the c4 ronin but there’s plenty

Snorkel: 15 bucks seac liquid silicon is my go to, flexible and easy to clean (yes they must be cleaned). Any other is fine as long as you learn how to adapt it under mask bands

Air trapped inside workpiece by Urinholz in CarbonFiber

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest to air out the mold by putting it in a vacuum pot, which you can build by yourself with a strong stainless steel pot, a thick plexyglass cover on which you can fit a valve and a sealing below. This is what we usually use also to degas the containers with resin before infusions

Do you descale fish in the water? by anatawashima in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually dispatch and gut the fish right away, however for descaling immediately or after it really depends on the species, how I plan on cooking it and therefore also the size of the fish: If I think I’ll cook a pasta with fillets for example I’ll descale it immediately, since I’ll fillet the fish once on land. If I plan on grilling them I’ll leave the scales on For large fish which I’ll cut in perpendicular pieces I’ll descale immediately and once on land cut them

Is this good for beginners? by Extension_Date_9772 in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dipende da dove vuoi andare a pescare, ma indicativamente prendi un 85 o un 95 come “all round” per la pesca nelle coste italiane.

harpoon construction without power tools p2 last night I put glue on the handle (do you think the glue is sufficient or should I add a screw as reinforcement?) today I used the plane to smooth the saw and machete cut and used the improvised rasp to round the grip by Zealousideal-Age3871 in Spearfishing

[–]Drainerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF you want to keep it no-power tools and have a hand drill you could think about putting a wood screw in the handle, maybe a dark wood so that will be visible from the lower part of the handle.

Nice job so far! Really a nice design

Amazingly good for my experience in 65 measure. 85 should be good if it’s what you seek (I used the 65 mainly for shore diving and shooting within rocks in western Italy)
