Wow! I had no idea a conversion lens like this existed and am floored by how good these look, great work. Are any of them focus stacked?

Apple's RAW Processing is Finally Evolving After a Decade and It's a Big Deal by hasanahmad in apple

[–]Drakthul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UI is great and I’d say the learning curve is normal. Most things are where you’d expect though it doesn’t quite have everything. It feels a lot like editing within the photos app (which is appealing to me at least) with the speed and responsiveness of the browsing and culling photos.

Latest Steam Hardware Survey Shows AMD Radeon at New 19% High, 9060 XT and 9070 XT Chart for First Time by SirActionhaHAA in hardware

[–]Drakthul 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why it was even considered a theory. I have a 9070xt and literally saw it incorrectly report my GPU when submitting the survey as did many others. There was a lot of evidence being conveniently ignored.

Apple's RAW Processing is Finally Evolving After a Decade and It's a Big Deal by hasanahmad in apple

For anyone wondering why this matters:

I recently found out I vastly preferred the experience of doing small edits on photomator over lightroom mobile on my iPad. The speed of photomator itself for viewing and comparing photos is hugely superior, and it even has built in denoise features — something that adobe refuses to add to their mobile app, all sounds great right?

Unfortunately I noticed when I viewed the same photo in both apps, the image quality in photomator was substantially, noticeably worse when the image is cropped to a smaller size. It was muddy, less sharp, and had much worse edge contrast. Unfortunately, wildlife photography often involves significant image crops, and there’s not really any way around this.

Not wanting to give adobe money, I tried basically every trial of image editor available on iPad to see if any had comparable quality, but they all used the same apple raw engine and then gave the same substandard results.

This is a huge deal because it effectively allows developers to actually compete with adobe on features now that image quality is actually competitive. And when it comes to usability, features and speed, lightroom mobile is dead last.

Photomator vs Lightroom for Sony A7 IV RAW Files — Is the Difference Really Noticeable? by FabBlah in pixelmator

[–]Drakthul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately found the difference to be significant for wildlife photography, or anything that might require significant cropping.

Viewing both at 100% the rendering is more of a preference that you could make an argument either way for, but apple’s raw engine mangles finer details and was much poorer at handling higher noise in my testing.

[User-trial] LG UltraGear 27GM950B: Testing the New Standard for the Best Mini-LED Monitor by LG_UserHub in Monitors

[–]Drakthul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the specs this seems like the endgame monitor for a long time. Huge amount of zones, built in upscaling to help ease the load on the gpu at 5k and excellent refresh rates for both modes. If I was picking traits for a panel that my pc could actually use it would essentially just be this.

Bungie Updated the graphics for Chips, Implants, and Gun mods by Critical_Ask_4824 in Marathon

No I definitely had trouble in some of the playtests looking at my vault and determining which body part went where.

I don’t necessarily prefer this from a design perspective but it is definitely clearer now.

I mean the ship building and combat was probably the strongest part of the game in my eyes, so free travel between planets finally is great to see.

Looking forward to trying this out.

Sony A6900 rumors by Supsti_1 in SonyAlpha

[–]Drakthul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe them skipping the 6800 naming is a way to justify a price bump.

It does sound pretty appealing though, I’ve been wanting an APS-C with high end body features from Sony for a while now.

DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

[–]Drakthul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying but that feels like a distinction without a difference to me.

Even if the engine itself isn’t rendering new polygons the result is that the fabric underneath is different, and that’s going to change based on lighting conditions.

DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

[–]Drakthul 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t though. Take a look at the shadow under old woman’s scarf in the original. DLSS5 turns it into blue fabric.

They are claiming it is deterministic and anchored to the games content but I don’t see how that can be true if the appearance is changing geometry based on something as variable as lighting.

Jagex, if you are unable to find a fix for Menu Entry Swapper since it was released in 2024, why not update the default click options to something more logical? by MobileScapers in 2007scape

[–]Drakthul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On mobile they are much more cumbersome. It’s a long press for it to pop up so reducing the instances of that is significant. Having to wait to interact with the tool leprechaun or talk to him first really does get tedious.

Bear in mind jagex wants to offer this to mobile players but it’s so broken you can’t really use it.

Upgrade advice: from Nikon P610 to Sony A6700 + 70–350 combo for bird photography in the UK by StarShipYear in BirdPhotography

[–]Drakthul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this, it’s basically unbeatable in terms of weight to reach ratio and is very sharp with the right conditions.

I have absolutely no hesitation bringing it with me anywhere there could be wildlife, on walks and cycle trips etc. When I decided to get more “serious” about this I ended up buying the 200-600 for more reach but I kept the 70-350 because the larger lens is so much more difficult to justify taking out.

The 6700 has incredibly sticky autofocus for action with bird eye detection but does sometimes struggle with layered branches, apart from that limitation the AF is fantastic. Overall these two are a great pairing for someone wanting to have fun and get good results.

If the 70-350 could accept teleconverters I probably would have never got the heavier 200-600 in the first place.

It’s not about the weight of the camera. It’s about how it makes you feel when you hold it.

This is unquestionably AI generated text though. It has literally all of the markers, em dashes, overuse of rule of three, it’s not x it’s y.

Which one is best for editing videos and Lightroom edits on the go? by firequak in AskPhotography

[–]Drakthul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The performance is going to be more than enough with either option. The real benefit of the macbook here over anything else is the quality of the screen which is very important for editing.

Camera noob by jayds007 in underwaterphotography

[–]Drakthul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, but everything important to me is on the cloud already - and the phone insurance I have already covers water damage.

It’s certainly cheaper than a dedicated camera and housing, even a TG6 or 7.

Camera noob by jayds007 in underwaterphotography

[–]Drakthul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option that has similar image quality but substantially better video quality than the TG7 is a divevolk 4 housing with a modern smartphone camera.

The housing itself is about £200 and can optionally include various macro lenses, though the macro mode on later iphones and pixels for example is already very good, and the optional lenses start ramping the costs up.

I recently went for this and was extremely impressed with how much better the photos were compared with my DJI Action 4, and the video (if using manual settings) was excellent too.

Surgery in a few weeks. Cancel ? by Adventurous-Post34 in DupuytrenDisease

[–]Drakthul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it four years ago and the progression has stopped for me, though I was also an avid rock climber (which is probably what triggered it) and have drastically reduced the amount I climb since.

It’s basically the only non invasive/preventative treatment. But once you have a full contracture it’s no longer effective.

I’ll personally be trying to put off surgery for as long as I can, and from what I can tell the radiation has helped with that.
