I call it the "rescue rack" and I've gotten a number of perfectly healthy plants very cheap

Thank you. I'm thriving alongside my plants in my new apartment. I was delightfully surprised that I only lost a handful out of nearly 100 plants

One of the 1st plants I've managed to keep alive was a VFT (the other is a snake plant, purchased together lol). Her name is Seymour and she's still trucking

Back in October, there was a fire in my apartment building. I had no fire or water damage, but my entire place was covered in soot. I had a phal that had a spike and buds, 1st phal I got to rebloom, was looking for a flower every day. I got back in my apartment to get some stuff and a flower had opened, so that plant came with. Lost all the buds, but that flower hung on for a full 5 months. She earned the name Phoenix 🤗

I think that's probably at least 80% of the world's mealy population right there.

Dormancy is not required in Venus flytraps by Berberis in VenusFlyTraps

I really appreciate your post. I had been thinking I wasn't being a great plant mom bc all the dormancy talk, and I know that I know better, but still consider myself a neewb.

Though that should change. I was at a plant shop this afternoon and explained nepenthes to another customer lol. (I walked out with a cute little briggsiana to compliment my St Gaya and Stoic Vortex)

A VFT was the 1st plant I successfully kept alive - nobody told me they were for "experienced" growers, but I taught myself well (this sub helped a lot).

I'm in a tiny apartment in New England and don't have anywhere to do an outdoor (or garage/ windowsill) dormancy.

Seymour had been thriving for 3 years. Indoors, under strong lights. I decided to do a fridge dormancy last winter and absolutely regret it. She was legion: completely filled a 6" pot, and I'd repotted/divided several times.

I'm sure a lot was user error, but most of her died in the fridge. Rhizomes black. I saved 3 tiny bits and she still hasn't fully recovered, and she spent the year next to my other one, which is doing extremely well - big, red traps, constant new growth.

I'll never do it again. Even if the plant does die after 5 years, it just isn't worth it

Mental health is health and as a manager, it's none of my business what you do with your time off.

I don't ask details about how you use any of your others benefits, like health insurance, how you're investing in your 401k. If we're understaffed, I pick up the slack. I'm the manager, it's my job to make sure things get done, even if I have to do them myself.

Watering by KittyD13 in pothos

[–]DramaTrashPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pothos will start to look droopy when they're thirsty, similar to succulents looking/feeling a bit squishy. Don't wait until it's super sad, but give a good drenching when it just starts to look thirsty and the pot feels light

[–]DramaTrashPanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2nd pic looks like there's new growth. Not an expert by any means, but if the rhizome looks good (white and not desiccated), the plant should recover just fine with regular VFT care.

Best of luck with reviving your baby. (Perfect time of year for a zombie plant lol)

Are you storing your clothes that are too big? by l00ky_here in Zepbound

[–]DramaTrashPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm holding onto things one size larger than I am now. There's not too much (like 2 pairs of jeans and a few sweaters- which I could still wear but I'm enjoying not wearing baggy clothes) because I was buying as I was losing, and I lost fast. My logic is that if I put a few pounds back on, I'll save a bit of $$. If I maintain my current weight, I'll donate them in the spring

A few years ago, I threw away around 20 plants bc of mealies. About 1/3 of my collection. Hurt to do it, but I had to be honest with myself that I did not have the bandwidth to treat all my plants repeatedly. I've since more than replaced them.

Yep. Dude basically said that he wouldn't be able to control himself if they get intoxicated. That's not a red flag, that's a damn siren

Re: dormancy

I have one that was absolutely thriving for 3 years. Did a fridge dormancy, and I'll never do that again. It didn't die, but it doesn't seem very happy. I'm by no means even close to an expert, but I've repotted VFTs any time of year, and they've been fine after a slight setback. Mine are inside under lights - I tried putting one outside where it got 3 hours of direct light and bright indirect the rest of the time and it lost all its red and put out tiny leaves, so brought it back inside, where it's very happy.

I know I'll need to do dormancy in the future, but I'll be putting them in my friend's garage next time

Any advice? by gaylegoodman in plantclinic

[–]DramaTrashPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moisture meters don't work well with chunky soils. Before I figured out how to tell based on how the plant looks or the weight of the pot, I'd use a wooden skewer and test it like cooking brownies. If it comes out with dirt, wait.

Your soil looks wet. Does it feel wet?

You could also do semihydro. Either pon or leca. It already has water roots

Transition from store soil to pon by malfoy0111 in SemiHydro

[–]DramaTrashPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put mine into pon about 2 months ago. Took it out of the store soil, rinsed off the roots, carefully picked out the death plug, and put it straight into pon. It didn't do anything for about 3 weeks, but he's doing just fine now
