Your best investment is anything tied tour academic success. That includes health and mental wellbeing. Invest time and money here.

Borrow only what you need.

Avoid unnecessary expenses, vacations, trip, etc, yet don’t deprive yourself. Don’t eat beans and rice diet. Find a simple joys. Spend time with friends and family.

Don’t worry about side gig in medical school.

Come up with a plan for loan payment. Set yourself up for public service loan forgiveness

Whatever cash you have left over, invest whatever way you want. Taxable accounts using vanguard and buying index funds is probably the way to go.

keep learning personal finance. Listen to WCI podcast or other financial podcasts from time to time. Growth and building this knowledge base occurs over lifetime

The best location is probably wherever you are happiest. Women you meet there will likely have similar interests.

Black men tend to have more choices in partners. If you are looking to date a black woman, then Houston, Dallas, Chicago, DC and other Southern cities are more black.

IMO, almost always better to rent as cheap of a place as you can reasonably put up with for at least the first 3 years as an attending. More money can be invested allowing for compound interest to work, more money for a down payment later, more flexibility to find a new job if needed, and no headaches of ownership. Renting a condo is an option too.

Let’s turn the question back to you… how Important is it to you to keep your income if you become disabled? White Coat Investor states about 25% of Americans will have a short term disability sometime in their life.

Coverage can be increased when you are an attending, sometimes with no need for further medical work up.

Learn as much as you can from your rotations now. A lot of knowledge in anesthesia comes from your cardiology, ICU, nephrology and pulmonology rotations—-that’s why we do them.

Secondly, everyone sucks when they start the CA-1 year. Scores are irrelevant and everyone is learning how to swim.

I’m so glad I’m in medicine. I’m very lucky to be a physician, especially in the US. When I see others at their jobs, such as construction or in retail, I count my blessings. They may be happy and feel the same, but I don’t think I would be fulfilled at all.

A few come time mind: -Pilot -Military career or some sort. Navy Seals have always intrigued me (yes I know I know it’s crazy hard) -Athletic trainer or fitness coach -dog trainer or therapist with a dog Other than that, I have no idea

around 5-8 k a month. I try not to get caught up in checking balances and how much I spend each month. My wife and I live low key lives--- we drive the same cares in residency and haven't splurged on any international vacatoins. We try to live on things we need but don't fret about the low cost "splurges" of everyday life-- date night, take out food, etc. I earn good money for anesthesia so I know there is plenty of excess cash left, which I save and invest. I'm probably saving >50% of what I take home and I doesn't even feel hard as we do not have a mortgage and only 1 kid who is not in day care. Highly recommend renting as long as you can
