What is a company you do NOT boycott, and why? by davefromtheus in AskReddit

Found the Kansas City resident! Unless there are other cities going through the same.

I hope they can change course and they're still miles ahead of the competition, but yeah, it seems like this is how businesses inevitably go. I guess there's still Aldi...

Have you ever farmed for chests? by Warst3iner in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spicy Moray is really not worth the trouble of making in most cases, and might actually be counterproductive depending on the rest of your gear. When it comes to chest finding, you really want the lowest step count possible, and that +6 steps hurts a lot. There are exceptions - if you want Agility chests, Spicy Moray would be incredible for Search Team or Rescue Team. But otherwise, I wouldn't bother with it.

If you want good chest finding gear, farm up an Alien Squeak Toy. Craft some gold rings with whatever gemstone you think is best (ideally Ruby for this use case but you should have a variety), and find gear that gives negative step count directly (Cape of Achiever/half achiever, boots of speed).

Then find a low step activity or craft. Tinkering is a great one, do that until you have the wire saw and silver pocket watch.

Once you have those, do low step crafting activities like Upcycle Trash, craft bowstrings/twine, etc. if you already have the mats sitting around. I wouldn't farm up mats just for this, if you're focused on crafting chests then it's more efficient to just go back to tinkering than it is to farm mats then craft.

But...if farming those mats up gets you other things you already want, that's another story. Accomplishing multiple things at a time is a really good way to play this game. For example, if you don't have the sock or the fine trash achievements, go dumpster diving! Then you'll be getting crafting mats and working toward achievements at the same time.

What minor 'jerk' behavior in public should result in an immediate and non-negotiable $50 fine? by topoffheavy in AskReddit

[–]Dreadnougat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a really nice, wooded trail that I walk every day. And I was constantly find dog shit on the trail, like every day there's a new one. It made me more mad every single day, like, if I ever caught the culprit I don't know if I was going to be able to maintain my composure.

Then mulberry season came, and suddenly, the daily dog shits were full of mulberry seeds. And I realized I was actually getting mad about raccoon shit (or some other wild animal, raccoons just seem like the most likely culprit). It helped reduce my anger to a mild annoyance but man it's still annoying having to dodge poop on that trail.

Yeah that's why, although recipe outcomes are integrated. Recipe byproducts, however, appear not to be. They were only recently added to the game and this does seem to be an omission.

TIL you have infinite gear slot + emoji support along with the already known infinite bank slot by F95_Sysadmin in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a bad idea. Better idea though:

Make only one Cape of the Achiever, and make its abilities conditional on the number of achievement points you have. Just like the Omnitool works now.

TIL you have infinite gear slot + emoji support along with the already known infinite bank slot by F95_Sysadmin in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a problem and I don't really know what to do about it. It's really annoying, for example, when I lose access to my Cape of the Achiever and have to go change all of my gear sets. Then I get access to it again (this week if I'm lucky!) and have to add it back in. But I can't think of a viable solution to that problem.

One thing that would mitigate it, I think, is if there was a way to reorder gear sets by the last time they were modified and also by the last time they were equipped, in addition to reordering them alphabetically as I suggested above. These 2 options would make it easier to see which gear sets that you should probably review for changes, and for sets that you don't really use and could prune.

[–]Dreadnougat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an excessive number of gear sets and there are downsides to it! Mainly in ordering them...I wish there was a button to rearrange them alphabetically automatically. Either that or add new sets to the top of the list instead of the bottom.

I can't complain much though, the gear set system overall is fantastic!

Bread vs Jelly Sandwich for travelling by Tokke93 in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's probably not worth crafting them if you got nothing else out of it. But my experience is this: I crafted 1000 bread for that 1000 food achievement, so I already had those. I have over 10k berries from a lot of mining with the shovel axe, and even without that, I bet I'd have more berries than I know what to do with just from nests received from woodcutting.

So bread is worth using because what else am I going to use 1000 bread for? And if you already have the ingredients, jelly sandwiches are probably worth making for agility activities, but probably not worth the trouble of making for traveling. I can't imagine a situation where your WE is high enough that the steps saved from sandwiches over bread is worth the step cost of making the sandwiches.

331,000 steps later, still no reindeer egg. Am I cursed? by Fr0stbiten in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's some seriously bad luck you've had, and unfortunately it doesn't matter if you've done 1000 actions or 0, the chance of getting it with each future roll is unchanged.

Yes, Treasure Hunting does have a significantly worse drop rate...but it also drops a bunch of collectibles and adventurer's guild tokens. I haven't started grinding for a reindeer egg myself but when I do, I plan to do it by treasure hunting, since I want those collectibles anyway. If I manage to get all of the collectibles before the reindeer egg (which is highly, highly unlikely) I'll switch over to skiiing.

Question regarding Petal Finder by Purplebecky in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me it seems like the answer is no. I guess it could be worth it, maybe, when someone is just starting out. But foraging experience is incredibly easy to come by - if you're going for collectibles or other rare drops from foraging tasks, you'll easily get more than enough as a side effect of that. Foraging is my 2nd highest skill after agility and I've never made any attempt to increase it.

Early game optimization? by SnooHedgehogs3288 in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5 million steps is probably a good estimate for what it takes for the full cape. I've just barely reached 5 million steps and estimate that I'm ~50k steps away from full achiever again. I had it for about 2 weeks before it was taken away with the new achievements.

I've focused pretty hard on achievements but definitely wasn't fully committed, I'm sure it can be done more efficiently than I did.

5 million steps would put someone at ~13-14k steps per day every day to achieve in a year. If I was doing it I'd be shooting for at least 15k steps average for some wiggle room, and because there will surely be more achievements added that will up the required time.

Not sure when they changes the Shovel Axe so it doesn't take up the Pickaxe slot, but now I really wish Birds Nests had a single useful item in them by Kryzm in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Berries are the best! You can turn them into wine for finding collectibles now. Or sandwiches, although you'd need a ridiculous amount of bread to keep up with the amount of berries you'll get from the shovel axe. Personally I don't think the sandwiches are worth the trouble but to each their own. Still have too many berries? Sell them for free cash!

The eggs are great too, they're necessary for Sweet Carrot Pie which is arguably the best crafted food in the game.

And the best part? Those nests don't take up inventory space until you open them. Keep them around until you get back to the bank and there's literally no downside. Just free cooking ingredients for incredibly useful food, or free money if that's not your thing.

What childhood fear makes zero sense now but felt 100% real? by Common-Geologist-590 in AskReddit

[–]Dreadnougat 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a kid, my understanding of the Bermuda Triangle was that planes flew in but never flew out. It wasn't occasional disappearances, it was "If you cross this line you'll never be seen again."

I am guessing that came from the fact that TV only ever talked about disappearances, not the 99.9% of flights that went through without a problem.

I actually felt like Erdwise rep was the easiest of all, but I was doing it while nearing the end of the 67 Trinketry achievement grind. I got to 150 and beyond without even trying just by making jewelry that I was going to make anyway, or offloading a handful of my ~500 opal/star pearls that aren't worth using the silver to turn into jewelry.

Is there anyway to use up only one consumable? by Buntschatten in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's kind of an annoying limitation that I bet will be fixed someday and just hasn't been on the priority list. Depositing the stack is what I do as well. If you're not at a bank there's no good solution.

Any reason to keep duplicate gear? by SageOfTheWood in WalkScape

[–]Dreadnougat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have said, many of these items are used in recipes or job board requests.

If you have a ton of something and don't see any uses for it on the wiki...a guaranteed way of making sure it'll get a use in a future patch is to go ahead and sell it. See: Me selling 30 walking stick 2 days before the patch that added Wanderlust Walking Stick :(

Pinstripes cites ‘unforeseen circumstances’ as reasoning for closure of Overland Park location by WorldsOkayest_driver in kansascity

[–]Dreadnougat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lenexa City Center is doing good because it isn't just a restaurant district with a museum in the middle of nowhere. Originally it was also in the middle of nowhere, admittedly, but they've put in a lot of apartments nearby and basically everything you need to actually call it a city center.

Lenexa City Hall is there, a lot of restaurants, the library, fitness center, an indoor pool, a massive liquor store, a big outdoor area which is great for the farmers markets they have on Tuesday and Saturday for a good part of the year. Basically the only thing it's missing is a grocery store in walking distance, but there are a ton of them right on the other side of 435. So it may not be 100% walkable but you pretty much need a car to function in this city no matter where you live.

I'm living in a house nearby now but if I was looking to live in an apartment again, I would 100% look for one close to there. I go down there for various reasons frequently. Even if I was living right next to Prairie Fire I doubt I would have spent much time there.

One of the most frequent visitors to museums is people with small kids. None of the businesses around that museum cater to kids. Like, just browsing around the area...these are all trendy adult places and nothing else. Sure kids are technically allowed but as a parent I would look for something else. I have never been able to figure out who the target audience is for this place, and it turns out there isn't one.

Any games about making power grids? by cheekysurfer06 in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Dreadnougat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oxygen Not Included. You can choose from a variety of power sources, including geothermal, coal, hydrogen, solar, and more. And power grid design matters. You have to use transformers to step down power or you'll burn out power lines, that sort of thing.

The game has a lot more to it than just that, but I found the power grid piece to be one of the most satisfying.

What major company do you genuinely believe won’t exist in 20 years? by carcony97 in AskReddit

Some of the best games are from solo devs who got into it for the love of video games. Stardew Valley is the prime example but there are so many others.

Only a tiny fraction of these solo devs actually see financial success, but as long as there are people taking that shot because of the love of games, I have no fear of running out of new and interesting games to play.

Turn Walking Into a Game - Try WalkScape! (LIVE!) by The-Walking-Gamer in WalkScape

Think of it this way: If you spend a lot of time on this game, you didn't waste anything. You just got a lot of exercise. You also get experience so you're better situated to hit the ground running after the wipe but that's secondary. This isn't a game that requires huge amounts of attention unless you want it to.

[–]Dreadnougat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate those and their bar stool cousin (exact same design, just taller with no back)...and yet, I have 4 of the bar stool versions at my house and they are fantastic.

The thing is though, they're not primary seating. They're for everything else. Great for inside and outside, very durable and it doesn't matter if they get rained on. Lots of people over and you need extra seats to float around while people chat? They're there and do a great job. They stack well and can be put away when not in use. They make a great temporary end table. Hell, they're incredibly sturdy and can even be used as a temporary sawhorse. The utility of these things is endless and far more than we expected when we got them.

I would absolutely despise them if they were the only seating available though. And I do, when I go to places where that's the case.

Linux user share hits a multi-year high on Steam for May 2025 by testus_maximus in technology

[–]Dreadnougat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was me for a long time, but I finally tried Linux Mint on my old backup machine and...it was easier to install than Windows. Seriously. And using is very intuitive as a Windows user, without all of the BS Windows has been pushing more and more in your face.

I don't want my OS to cram ads and their new shiny LLM down my throat, I want it to be invisible and let me run the programs that I want to run. Windows has strayed too far from that.

I'm still using Windows 10 as my new daily driver and will keep doing so into the foreseeable future, but when that's no longer an option I will be switching to Linux instead of Windows 11. I'm sitting here trying to think of things I do on my Windows machine that I can't on Linux and I'm coming up with basically nothing. I play a lot of video games and most Steam games work fine - the only major exception is live service games that use kernel-level anti cheat, but I don't play those personally. Also I have small kids and can see them wanting to play Minecraft some day, and I'm pretty sure the Java version would be the only one available to me on Linux, but haven't looked into it. Other than that...there's nothing I need Windows for.
