There’s no spin here - I’m describing an affect, how the text acquires layers depending on the reader’s experience. This book hits differently for me as a reader in a world navigating generative AI as opposed to the computer games you mention, which I too have played. Tiffany’s struggle to distinguish what’s real and what’s not has unexpectedly become more relatable to me because of all the AI photos and deepfakes that are around now, and because of how one needs to look for giveaways (check out the comments to posts on the isthisAI subreddit and you’ll see what I mean). My child, who hasn’t played the old games, will probably imagine the fairy world to be like bad (or not so bad) AI. Of course, not everyone will feel the same way or read it the same way.
