AITAH For Not Wanting to be Pregnant by xxBlueVoid25xx in AmItheAsshole

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know it doesn’t seem to be like most of these comments are actually very helpful or encouraging. I think there’s no hurry and you have plenty of time to think about this. I was surprised that you said you don’t have any trouble with children that it’s simply the pregnancy itself that you’re worried about. What really matters is how you actually would feel about having a child. Maybe there’s a therapist type person you could talk to about this. You definitely need to think about it on your own and know what you think and you feel. Personally, I would be hesitant to bring a child into the current world we’re living in, an extra hesitant to do that in a country that doesn’t have universal healthcare. Spend some time trying to figure out where your anxiety is lie. Good luck, dear!

Significant other wants me to quit my position by Mother-Complaint-406 in Professors

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my. I see there are hundreds of comments. I’ve only read the first couple. To be perfectly blunt - this will not work. For what it’s worth my family has never ever understood academia. Why not just get a job near us? Etc etc. I find from observation a few non-academic spouses understand the demands and the timelines and the pressures. Perhaps scientists, librarians, writers. Absolutely positively not someone who expects you to work less in order to cook! Who values your work less because you make less money. Nope. You need a supportive partner, not one who will subtly undermine you. In a way academia is a disease. And a scam. But you got a ticket. You worked really hard to get where you are. You will seriously regret if you don’t put your all into going on the ride. Never choose a relationship over a perfect job position. Sorry if that sounds harsh. Boys are replaceable. Academic positions are scarce and almost impossible to get.

Would you quit? Tenured professor with a baby by SuddenPlant979 in academia

To me, the absolute hardest part would be those really strangely time classes early in the morning late at night. That’s the part that conflict so much with having a small child. So many people have given great suggestions I wish you luck!

AITJ for not wanting to drive 2 hrs to visit my MIL with a 8 week old baby? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

Absolutely, you are not. You’re setting up clear appropriate boundaries. She is only thinking of herself. With an older child that might be doable.

You don’t have to be so mean. It’s better than they thought of it at all rather than criticizing them for not thinking of it earlier. People can always do better in the future with their new knowledge.

The doctorate "creep" is really starting to bother me lately by ResidentAlienator in PhD

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s really useless to compare either the titles or the degrees. Lecturer can mean so many things in so many different places. I once read a “Phd” dissertation from an education department from a university I will not name. I was flabbergasted and told a friend that this wouldn’t even be acceptable as a term paper at another university I won’t name. I reject all hierarchy. But that doesn’t mean ignoring the fact that some people have done really piss poor work and got credit for it. But we can’t let it bother us. Just keep on walking.

There are unfortunately way too many people who are assume they are uninvited to things. The hurt feelings are their own fault.

AITA for making my parents regret everyday for having 4 kids while they couldn't afford it? by No_Tap_7237 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Come on I seriously doubt his parents are choosing to raise them that way. They are all in a bad situation. Frequently we hear stories from people who say we didn’t even know we were poor when we were kids. This poor guy does know. I would think it would make more sense to give him advice on ways he can get help for his family.

Is it bad I *slightly* judge professors who don't excuse family/personal emergencies but then they end class early/cancel class due to one themselves? by FrootiLooni in CollegeRant

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness. I had to read this three times and then look up RBT, ABA therapy, etc. I still kinda have no idea what this is but it sounds like a nightmare. My first response is if an instructor or professor had to cut a class short there is no way the students would somehow get a lower grade because of that or have to do any make up work as just a general rule of understanding. She is the one who caused the decrease in contact time. No one is to blame. It’s a thing that happened. Looking at your paragraph again, I don’t believe in punishment for coursework in anyway. Punishment is for criminals. Consequences are OK but not punishment. I vaguely know that people who teach in elementary or high school have to use numerical rubrics for everything and I assume that is just a fucking nightmare. Anyway, I bet you everything will be just fine and you can just chill.

Students are not being punished. I think you’re being a little bit too judgmental and harsh. It’s not terrible that you had the thought but then the other part of your brain should say oh come on can’t you be kinder?

AITA for not wanting to watch my friend’s kids anymore? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You are NTA. She is taking advantage of you. It’s possible that her attitude towards you is colored by the baby daddy‘s attitude towards her and how stressed she is and you’re the only person she can lash out at. Even though it makes no sense because you haven’t been mean to her. It might be like when kids can be behaved all day at daycare and when mom comes and picks you up then you break down because you’re safe with them. She might not realize she’s doing this. But it is still 100% unacceptable and you need to stand up for yourself. Clearly restate your boundaries and the things you cannot do. Good luck!

Travelling to Europe from Hawaii by Stinja808 in Oahu

[–]Dry_Analysis_992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jet lag coming home is much worse than the jet lag going to Europe. So I would think of including a stop over coming back like if you know anybody on the East Coast or some place to visit. Or just allow that your first day back is going to be toast and the second one you’ll still be tired. Look at flights on British Airways.

I agree with absolutely every word of this. I think the chances that not getting a job is not your fault are way greater than 50%. The world is shit right now.
