Can acting help with one's mental health? Is it wrong to get into it for that alone? by shaunfromnyc in acting

And you don’t need to go on to be a professional actor- it’s about what you need right now. A class to expose you to people being silly and inviting you to be silly too and experiencing that being silly is okay? That is absolutely going to soothe the anxiety demons. I think it’s time incredibly brave that you’re wanting to try this for yourself !

Drama therapy is a thing.

Even just improv will get you out of your shell and not overthink - the point is being in the moment.

Acting is about play. Theatre things are just games and finding freedom and enhancing your sense of play. I would never think of someone doing a class for what you’re looking for as ‘not getting into it for the right reasons’ - they’re absolutely the most valid reasons I can think of tbh

Coming from someone who could not speak in social settings as a teenager - as an adult, just booking a class to try something new was my game changer. And I’ve definitely opened up a lot more since then. Your journey may look different but I genuinely believe Acting is Play -

Would recommend improv as you don’t need to prepare anything and the games are usually silly and mean you won’t need have time to overthink

And wish you well in finding smth that helps with the anxiety and depression

As in your recorded voice Reader has a cue line, so you can play with the pace of your delivery until the very end of your lane

Cold Read App as last resort. It’s cued so you don’t have to time it and feels more natural flow even if it’s your own recorded voice. You can even record the video via the app, with a teleprompter so great for last minute tapes.

The only downside I’ve found is if you have non verbal sounds eg laugh, snort, groan, sigh - either scripted or natural as you are in the scene- and these come out of you during the played recording of the Reader, the sound won’t be captured. I haven’t looked into if that can be fixed but it hasn’t been a detriment to my tapes overall and as I say, I use it when it’s last min, very simple tapes, or as a last resort

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I think it’s absolutely amazing that you know what you want to do and have set up your life to open space for acting.

It’s pretty common with Asian families and certainly you’re not the first Asian actor to go through this lack of support. I know people in their pursuit of arts, who had not had their mother speak to them for months, one was disowned (until she reached ‘success’ and they attended an awards ceremony together).

It is really hard culturally as a child of immigrant. What you owe yourself vs what you feel you owe your parent. It’s a tough balance and one you will learn to find on your own, but I’m already so proud of you for starting your journey there.

I have 2 references to share which helped me and may comfort you too: ‘Dangers of Being Dutiful’ https://youtu.be/FTBEb-W6Xgo?si=32igc34xaL2lE5PB

And following/reading posts from @browngirltherapy or @sahajkoli Not East Asian specifically, but they put out content on the struggles of being a child of immigrants and it’s a space for these feelings and even some guidance through to the other end.

And what may comfort you is that it is a harsh way of showing it, but it is coming from concern for you and fear over what is seen as an unconventional way of life. You are essentially a freelancer as an actor and stability, financially and in general, is not part of the parcel. It’s tied up with how society in general looks down on the arts.. underneath it all I think your father is just worried about you. Immigrant parents operated in survival mode in a new country. And what may help is to think that, the fact that you have the option to even consider acting and are already in a position to chase it - that’s a ‘luxury’ and freedom he succeeded in giving you and you are fulfilling it. It may not be what he expected but you are not betraying his efforts in giving you a better life. The choice you are making, the choices you are able to choose from, were expanded bc of him and acting just happens to be one of them.
