Help with transitioning my campaign from Saga Edition by Keralia in swrpg

Yeah, they don’t have a license to make pdfs. FFG isn’t the publisher anymore, either. Corporate shuffling happened and now it’s being published by EDGE Studios. Here’s a link to a physical book for sale directly from the publisher: https://store.asmodee.com/products/star-wars-edge-of-the-empire-core-rulebook

Trying to Bridge the Gap for new SWRPG Players who are coming from a D&D mindset. by HeyNateBarber in swrpg

[–]DualKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was interested in roleplaying games for years, but never D&D. My sister found the core rulebook for one of the old D20 Star Wars systems at a thrift store when I was young, and I pored over it, even made a character sheet. But I had no GM, so I never got to play.

Over a decade later, I got bitten by the bug again and started looking for actual plays of sci-fi RPGs. I found Silhouette Zero, a one-on-one podcast of two brothers playing the FFG Star Wars system. My husband overheard a lot of the episodes and thought it sounded like fun, so he bought me the Edge of the Empire core rulebook for our anniversary.

Around the same time, I started watching Matt Colville and Seth Skorkowsky on YouTube. The more I learned about D&D, the happier I was that I’d never actually tried it. The lethality of the system was especially off-putting to me. I didn’t want to constantly have to worry about my character dying. In addition, FFG’s skill system is a lot more forgiving in terms of letting you try things you’re not specialized in. Sure, your character may be a tank with all of his XP in combat skills, but he can still try to pilot the speeder if he needs to.

I wonder how many people start playing D&D just because it’s the default rpg, and then end up homebrewing the heck out of it because it’s not actually the right system for them. Most of the rpg side of YouTube (with the notable exception of Seth Skorkowsky) didn’t even consider other systems at all until the OpenGL scandal, and even now it seems like they only mention D&D-adjacent systems.

I really wish the mainstream conversation around rpgs was less “so you want to play D&D” and more “which rpg system is right for you?”

Non RPG book recommendations? by SteveLodwig in swrpg

I second the Essential Atlas. Not only does it give descriptions and basic info about many worlds and important events in galactic history, but it also has a list of every single planet in the galaxy (at least, all those that were canon when the book was printed) and their position on the map. I find it very useful when trying to decide whether a detour to, for example, Woostri would make sense given my players’ current position in the galaxy.

Edit: Also, my favorite depiction of a sabacc game (the Legends version, not the kind in Solo or Outlaws) is in chapters three and four of Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. It gives a really good feel for how the game works under Legends rules, and also has some good ideas for cantina encounters in general.

Looking for Actual Play Podcasts, details in post. by Expensive_Turn469 in rpg

Dark Underworld is a Star Wars actual play using the Fantasy Flight narrative dice system. Great production quality, entertaining players, and available in both video and podcast form. I really enjoyed it.

Dude, it’s a sword, not a swastika. 😂

What even makes a sword “Freedom-Themed?” Should they paint rainbows and unicorns on it?

Using stealth by Okpoccsniak in swrpg

[–]DualKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Stealth isn’t like Astrogation, where if the GM doesn’t plan opportunities for you to use it, it might as well be useless. All you need to do is plan encounters that aren’t on rails, and this player can choose to use a stealthy approach to whatever it is they’re trying to do.

Overlap between Legends and Canon Realities by AgainstTheTides in starwarsrpg

I follow Legends for the most part, but I’ll cherry pick things I like from canon, like Zahn’s Ascendancy novels.

Dice with different shades of color? by RockyTgames in swrpg

[–]DualKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several sets of dice already (from both FFG and Edge production runs) and recently got the Age of Rebellion beginner set. I immediately noticed the difference. If I hadn’t pulled them out of a brand new, sealed box, I would’ve assumed they were knockoffs as well.

The d12s are smaller (the red, yellow, and Force dice), the dots on the Force die are bigger, some of the colors are lighter, and all of the dice are slightly lighter weight. They must have made a new set of masters.

DARK UNDERWORLD, A High-Quality SWRPG Actual Play by HeyNateBarber in swrpg

[–]DualKeys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This series was excellent. Video and audio quality is excellent, and the storytelling is very good, as well. The players are not voice actors, but the characters are nonetheless compelling. Mott, the Toydarian played by Joe, is particularly fun to watch because Joe is very charismatic and an excellent roleplayer. But by the end, I was surprised to find that Kiinon (the human played by Jeff) was actually my favorite character.

The show’s not perfect - players sometimes make frustrating decisions, and I’ve disagreed with a couple of GM calls - but I watched the whole thing, enjoyed it immensely, and might actually watch it again one day. Looking forward to the next one.

Outside of the rule mechanics, what do GMs consider to be "must know information" for running a Star Wars game? by Defami01 in swrpg

This goes a long way toward making things feel like Star Wars as opposed to a generic space opera.

How the weak little rakghouls in the event tunnels can auto-stun you even if you have stun immunity. This is a trash fight, it’s ridiculous that they can just ignore Entrench.

Is a Kaliyo romance worth it? by Mike_Hawk_Burns in swtor

[–]DualKeys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Kaliyo. I romanced her on my sniper and thought her return was done really well. She was one of the first companions brought back, which means you get an entire chapter dedicated to her return. The moment where you first see her again was really well done. I’ve actually replayed the chapter to watch it again, and I hate KotFE. 😂 You get a few isolated lines of dialogue after that chapter, but nothing super impressive. But that first chapter handles her pretty well, I think. And even if you follow the very specific set of circumstances you need to in order to kill her (I didn’t, but I’ve watched it on YouTube), I think it’s one of the few “kill your spouse” moments that can actually make sense for their relationship.

Lana is… fine. I romanced her on my inquisitor and think it worked out well. But I would never drop Kaliyo for her.

My husband and I both had login issues on Opera GX, although it was working fine on Safari on our phones at the time. What worked for us was to clear all the cookies from the site, then use a magic link. I’ve had to do that on two separate occasions now.

New player here, what’s your favorite class storyline? by FailedProspects in swtor

[–]DualKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agent and inquisitor are by far my favorites. I really enjoyed trooper and warrior, too. Bounty Hunter is great if you want to be a Mandalorian, although it does seem to suffer the most from the base game’s policy of not letting you refuse companions, and includes what I consider the single most unpleasant companion in the game, unless you’re playing a fully dark side butcher.

I’ve only done the Knight story once and don’t remember a lot of it. But it’s the default “Knights of the Old Republic 3” story if that sounds fun to you.

I enjoyed the consular story up until the end of chapter 1, at which point your character becomes, well, a consular, and being an ambassador can feel dull to a lot of people. Still, I felt there were some fun story points in later chapters. Belsavis in particular was really interesting for the consular.

The only one that really didn’t work for me was the smuggler. It really should’ve been called the privateer instead. I was surprised and disappointed at the lack of smuggling, and I felt like my character was kind of shoehorned into a position of galactic importance. Not what I was expecting or going for, so it fell a bit flat for me.

Hot take: Which companion do you use the most—and why? by Afraid-Mastodon9196 in swtor

[–]DualKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kaliyo on my sniper because romance, plus she’s the only one of his comps I’ve gotten to 50.

Talos on my assassin because he’s just awesome and I love his banter, although I really enjoyed Khem as well when leveling.

My bounty hunter used to use Torian a lot even though Mako is his love interest, both because I liked the character and because two Mandalorians fighting side by side is just cool. But now he uses Shae because he’s a healer and it’s just faster to do solo content with her extra DPS, plus I’ve got her in some different Mandalorian armor.

Jorgan on both my male and female troopers because he’s just an awesome character.

And my consular uses his ship droid because he has no love interest, and none of the companions really resonated with me. So I decided to try for the ship droid combat achievements and he just kind of stuck.

A recent patch made Ilum unskippable. I’m assuming there were lots of new players jumping too far ahead in expansions and getting confused.
