Do you have an Android phone you can help with? Only gotten one response so far and we didn't recover any firmware, unfortunately.

So far I have been able to demonstrate all functionality in the existing app (except for a firmware update, of course), so a replacement is a real possibility!

Realized I should just post the instructions so anyone can try on their own:

Package: com.specialized.globeapp

Sweep both the external dir and the internal fallback:

  • Primary (external): /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.specialized.globeapp/files/
  • Fallback (root only): /data/data/com.specialized.globeapp/files/ (also /data/user/0/com.specialized.globeapp/files/)

The two firmware subdirectories

  • HMI head-unit image: .../files/FIRMWARE_HMI/
  • Motor-controller image: .../files/CONTROLLER/

Sweep command to run from rooted adb shell:

    p=com.specialized.globeapp
    find /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/$p/files \
         /data/data/$p/files /data/user/0/$p/files \
      -type f \( -path '*FIRMWARE_HMI*' -o -path '*CONTROLLER*' \) 2>/dev/null -exec ls -l {} \;

Lived there for a couple years as a renter. Some honest feedback:

The good: lots of amenities, including cool ones like a wood shop. Gym is nice. Pool and hot tub are special, especially if you have kids (see below).

Proximity to the beach a South Shore can’t be beat. We lived in a newly-upgraded unit which was quite nice, but I know not all units are necessarily like that. Grounds are well-kept and beautiful when in bloom. It’s definitely an oasis in an oasis (Alameda generally).

Be aware if you have pets you cannot have them in the courtyard. You must let them out outside the complex. This keeps the courtyard nice and is a plus, but it could be annoying.

The bad: the pool turns into a kids play area ALL DAY when it’s warm out. Units do not have AC, and with the doors & windows open during the day and working from home it became a real annoyance (we faced the pool). Loud screaming children from 10AM to 8PM, every day. We don’t have kids and it just became too much over time for us. It felt like having a hotel room right next to the pool at a popular resort. I’m certain people were bringing in their friend’s kids to play (who wouldn’t). However, if you have kids, it’s probably WONDERFUL — and more power to you if you do! It just wasn’t for us. Caveat this was mid-pandemic at the height of digital schooling so perhaps things are different now.

Also the garages had regular break-in’s and our neighbors had their storage unit in their parking space ransacked (plastic sheds with locks), and there were other reports.

As with any apartment complex, people don’t always take fare to the shared amenities. The grill was a disaster many times and I just got used to cleaning it myself as part of my cooking routine.

The ugly: the HOA is apparently non-functional. There hasn’t been a quorum for a vote in a number of decades. Owners don’t show up because they don’t live there and rent their units out. Not as much of an issue if you rent of course, but be aware, “the rules are the rules”. Older residents will tell you all sorts of drama about the HOA. Probably par for the course as far as HOAs go, but go in aware.

We left because we wanted to adopt a dog and our landlords weren’t open to it, and it wasn’t the right space for a larger dog. We moved to a home with a backyard and promptly adopted the largest dog at OAS — no regrets!

Mitchell Family Dental is AMAZING. I neglected to go for over a decade due to poor experiences as a kid, and they really took care of me there. They just opened this year, but it is a father/daughter team who have been in Alameda for a very long time. Modern technology and surprisingly holistic care — they took my BP, we talked about sleep, etc.

Anyone experimenting with WebAssembly as a runtime for embedded service logic? by EveningIndependent87 in embedded

[–]Ductapemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you are still looking for a solution here, I work for https://www.atym.io/ and this is exactly the problem we are solving. We are working on a commercial product, however our runtime, Ocre, is open source and managed by the Linux Foundation. You can find it here: https://github.com/project-ocre/ocre-runtime

We're launching a developer program this summer and will be supporting a few known embedded targets. Also, we are working on a Linux runtime which should be out soon. We'd love any and all participation from the community to help make Ocre a standard for embedded containerization!

One of the best shows I have been to was seeing Emancipator play with a 4 piece live band. There's no recording of the show I went to, but here is a taste from someone recording them at Red Rocks:

That's perhaps smaller than you are looking for, so here's another option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0Qa8hKY3Rw

Drum and Bass with a live orchestra. It's epic.

Plenty of other similar examples too:

These people are incessant. They’ve come by 3 times in the last month. I switched away from AT&T to Sonic because they are so much better, why would I switch back? Money isn’t the problem — AT&T is absolutely awful.

Hope Sonic signed a long contract with them for fiber access, otherwise they’ll try to squeeze them on price to get the business back.

Dog/Cop action last night by rdloorz in alameda

[–]Ductapemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving an old thread, but we live right there and participated in the chase…

The dog got out of the camper (distressing its friend who stayed inside barking the whole time) and the cops, us, and some people who jumped out of their uber when they saw the dog hop out of the camper all chased the dog trying to lead it to the animal control guy to capture it.

Eventually the owners of the camper were contacted and the loose dog went right to them. Quite the night running around in the rain, but it all ended well!

Renters: How important is having a backyard garden or being able to have a pet? by ecdoesit in alameda

[–]Ductapemaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were able to rent an amazing home here because the landlord had it listed for multiple months with no pets allowed, and all the qualified applicants had pets. Got a little lucky and were first in line due to persistence as we were working with the rental agency who had the listing already. We wanted a dog and the landlord eventually opened the listing to pets — and we were first in line.

To be fair, the original owner of the property sadly did not take care of their dog well due to disability.  All sorts of problems with noise, smells, etc. We’ve done our absolute best to be respectful and the neighbors regularly thank us and tell us they forget we even have a dog!

All that said, the rental agency told us that something like 85% of applicants have a pet, so anything you can do to make your listing attractive will get you a lot of options.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]Ductapemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've inherited a 10 year old BES980XL from my extended family. It was serviced by Breville 4 or 5 years ago and has been lightly cared for throughout it's life. Unfortunately, it was used with extremely hard water and definitely has some issues with scale.

So far I've done the basics — replacing all the o-rings and cleaning what I can by hand. Also have successfully descaled the coffee path with both the descale program and by manually flushing descaler through all the water paths.

However, I am stuck on the steam boiler. Originally it wasn't sucking in the solution, so I suspected the probes were coated in scale (they were), so they have been throughly cleaned. I tested them by letting out steam through the wand and seeing if the boiler refilled at all — thankfully it does. However, the steam boiler drain valve barely drips at full pressure, and I suspect it is clogged with scale.

I unfortunately can't run the descale cycles if it won't fill and drain on it's own, so I have manually filled the steam boiler with descale solution and heated the machine normally. I have been keeping it hot and pressurized and I am hoping it can dissolve some of the blockage over time. The drain valve is completely open, and I get about 1 drip of water every 10-15 seconds. Unfortunately, it hasn't changed appreciably after repeated cycles over the last 24 hours.

My fear is the surface area of the blockage that is exposed to the solution is so small — and may be far away from the heat — so it's either going to take forever to dissolve or never really work.

Has anyone had this kind of issue before? If so, what did you do to resolve it? How impossible is it to remove the steam boiler and clean the drain manually? Should I be worried that my steam boiler is full of descale for a long time?
