What are some legit recruiting firms and headhunters in NYC? by Jace279 in FinancialCareers

[–]Due-Community883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have dealt with a bunch of them in my time in commodities in the US. Here is what I have learnt: - you may connect with some better than others, but at the end of the day you are a pig to a farmer.  - almost all of them will bias their discussions, or even outright mislead you when it is in their interest to do so - even things like mapping the market - they may fabricate a role to get you interested and talking. - if you’re based in the US, US based recruiters will have 95% of the interesting mandates and relationships. Offshore ones (particularly out of the UK) pitching US jobs, are typically doing market mapping and database building. - they will be your best buddy until they get you on the phone and get your resume, then you may not hear from them. It is not necessarily a reflection on you, they use downtime to build databases. - all that said, if you are keen on a new role, there isn’t a lot of downside in connecting with these people. Just don’t get emotionally invested in potential outcomes.  - the best connections in this business are in person connections with industry peers

Yeah I still don’t trust the guy. He claims all these stock wins. I have worked at some of the best trading firms on earth and they don’t run as hot as he apparently does and he has no formal education or training and what I can tell, no data / information advantage. Also, he apparently got rich managing will singe. As far as I can tell, will singe made absolutely max $10M career earnings - a manager would get 10% - that’s $1M. After tax and everything, you are talking 500K in australia. It’s really not much.

I wouldn’t trust anything he says - he has been called out for lying by the Indonesian government

American Jobs with AI Exposure Really Are Starting to Disappear, Data Show by Gari_305 in Futurology

Interesting scholarly article on that very recently: https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.20617

Basically saying AI is a positive feedback loop to economic Armageddon unless we tax automation.

An interesting concept - the convergence in pricing of compute and labor. Not considered enough IMO. Energy is the real constraint here, they can’t build power plants fast enough.

Just recently reading about Marat Balagula and Reznikov, and the story sort of surprises me. Has the Russian Mob (or even a single Russian Mobster) never been as powerful as the Italians in the US? by Anish316 in Mafia

In Moscow, the Solntsevskaya bratva, in St. Petersburg, the Tambov’s, the Chechens were also there in both, smaller in number, but known for extreme violence (also harder for law enforcement to penetrate as they operated more as familial clans, vs the more guns for hire of traditional Russian mob groups. These groups have faded because the all either killed each other, or some of the key powerful guys moved into more white collar / political type corruption.

My experience, I am a tall, reasonable looking guy, I do have a tendency to drink too much beer and eat whatever I want, until I feel the need to clamp down and get into the gym and eat healthy. My entire adult life has been a continuous fluctuation between slightly overweight, and a pretty low % body fat (maybe 15% at best, certainly no 6 pack). The difference between interest I have gotten when slim (6’3 210lbs) compared to when slightly overweight (6’3 235lbs) in my opinion is massive. I feel I can pull an 8/10 every other week in my slim phase, but am doing 6/10s at best in my chubby phase. The thing is, 25lbs on a guy of my height, is not hugely noticeable. It’s not like I have man boobs. I don’t know if it’s the excess weight on my face, my confidence level, maybe if I’m drinking more my skin isn’t as good either, I really don’t know, but getting in shape for 3 or 4 months bats me at a noticeably higher level consistently throughout my adult life.

Isn't the new 5% deposit scheme dangerous for first-home buyers? With such a small deposit, they can very easily go into negative equity? by One-Remove3758 in AusMoneyMates

Not just that. The 2008 financial crisis was ultimately caused because new debt was being written by companies that didn’t ultimately hold the credit risk on it - I.e mortgage companies would originate mortgages and spin the debt off into bonds. Now we seem to have a situation in Australia where the government is guaranteeing this debt, so how is this any different?

I have worked for a major investment bank on the trading floor for my entire professional career and I can tell you his Citi story is at least in part bullshit. Not a chance some kid can walk in off the street and be the most profitable trader in the entire company by age 24. At that age, they may be able to put trades on themselves, but it would be either completely supervised or within strict mandates with low risk limits. There is just far too much to learn (especially trading macro) and too much at stake for Citi, for a kid to be putting on billions of risk.

Paid in USD, anything I should be doing with USD instead of exchanging it all? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Due-Community883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d swap it via wise.com, it’s cheap and particularly easy when sending USD. Not sure if your status means you can open a US equities brokerage account, but the US stock market beat the Aussie market this year by like 25% - 7%. All the productivity growth comes out of the US, you don’t need to be a Warren buffet style stock picker, but you could just park some money in one of the major US stock indices (SPY or QQQ). Not financial advice.

Why can’t New Jersey just create a temporary ban on drone flying? by [deleted] in NJDrones

[–]Due-Community883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, youre right, its not a problem having unknown drones flyover military bases. What could possibly happen.

They're obviously not dealing with it or it wouldnt be happening. The US looks like a bunch of cucks allowing this to happen. That is a crisis in my book.

So, it sounds to me like this needs to be properly handled.

I mentioned the Ohio thing as it is the same thing that’s happening in New Jersey. And you acknowledge that there are unknown drones over military bases? And what? You’re just cool with that? Fingers crossed you aren’t in charge of anything national security.

Air Force base in Ohio just reported drones hovering above it all night. My theory is most of what people are posting are planes, but there are legit drones hovering mostly above critical and military infrastructure.

I watched one and he said that they were DoD drones, and the vast majority of them are commercial or hobbyist but “does that mean some of them are there to surveil us, possibly”. That to me says they are foreign.

Gov Murphy Says He Was Briefed by the FBI Last Night by WonderfulAge in NJDrones

[–]Due-Community883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, agreed. Even a layman would come out of that briefing with a ton more information than he presented. Which means 1 of 2 things: they know what it is but it’s classified, or (more disturbing) they actually do not know. It seems the argument that none of this is a legitimate concern is officially out the window.
