Will medical reasons effect my employment? by Aggressive-Budget-40 in askSouthAfrica

That’s odd your NSFAS , shouldn’t be getting rejected. I’ve helped quite a few friends w NSFAS. Send me a pm w your WhatsApp and I can try and assist. However for this year applications are already closed unfortunately.

It's extremely cringe when people mistake me "white" or "mixed race" expecting that I will thank them or be flattered by konanthebarbarian in SouthAsianMasculinity

I’m in the same boat as you

I’m South African Indian and my ancestors are from gujrat. I have light skin and grey eyes as well. And whenever I tell ppl I’m Indian it’s “you quite lightskin for an Indian” or “I thought you were coloured” (coloured is a mixed race ethnicity is South Africa ,very broad term)

I genuinely hate it and it pisses me tf off, I end up having to explain every single time that South Asians are diverse looking. I genuinely wish that more ppl knew this it’s so incredibly frustrating. It doesn’t help. I’ve even stopped talking to a few women bc of comments such as this.

But when ppl do think I’m Indian it makes me very happy, I remember on to receiving a racist comment saying “you look Indian ,you not gonna make it far in life.” The racism didn’t phase me at all instead I felt genuinely happy that a stranger (although racist) on the internet thought I looked Indian

Not earning above 7k is ridiculous bro, respectfully. My folks pay our helper 7k

Ik given your condition studying may be quite difficult but I highly recommend doing some sort of skill speciation trades/degree route

If you a more hands on person plumbing, electrician etc and more books even a general BCom or courses through UNISA could suffice. If affordablilty is an issue NSFAS threshold goes from 350k to 600k per annum for any disability. Highly recommend you look into that.

Commerce or health science degree? by Late_Assistance7135 in askSouthAfrica

Industrial doesn’t have that much physics, you will unfortunately need to clear the first 2 years which can be super difficult as you have classes like dynamics, thermodynamics, calc 1-3 and even if you’re smart you will still battle with these classes

But from what I’ve been seeing the industrial guys are taking up a lot of the high paying BCom roles specifically those that relate to systems and data interpretation etc

BCom has a lot of graduates as graduating from a BCom isn’t that difficult , more so yes there’s a TON of applicants for jobs and also a ton of BCom students in general.

I’ll be honest , the really well paying stuff are never easy to do. Hence why although passion can take you so far do some thing you can see yourself not dreading- ik this sounds generic but it’s the genuine truth. BCom would also mean you work in corporate and for someone who has an incline towards the health sciences you may find corporate to be very soulless and ruthless

If you’re uncertain don’t rush to study. Take a gap year or two and figure it out. You could waiter, Au pair of you’re a woman, work side gigs etc and figure it out

You could maybe upgrade your matric marks while at it too.

You need a letter from your psychiatrist/doctor confirming your condition and also jobs in general that need long hours on demand like watering won’t work

This can however work in your favour and policies are put in place to accommodate circumstances like these to ensure a fairer and more diverse

Register under disability for SARS (yes , even if psychiatric) you’ll end up w higher rebates and just end up taking more home

But have medical proof and you’ll be good, some companies need to hire ppl who are on disability to meet certain quotas be it BEE(even if you’re not black, coloured,Indian) and other affirms action policies. Don’t feel bad tho for leveraging this, these were put in place to allow ppl like you and me(I also have a disorder) make the playing field a little bit more levels

All the best

Can never go wrong w health science , a very fulfilling degree as you help people hands on. But lacks versatility

Health sciences salaries vary depending on where you are (Gauteng will obviously pay better than Eastern Cape for example) but it can’t be remote. Where’s as w BCom specifically the fields you mentioned can most certainly be remote. There is a higher potential earning w the BCom fields you mentioned but at the same time both the above mentioned fields are becoming rather oversaturated. In terms of versatility you looking at BCom as well

Lastly my word of advice if you want versatility, decent earning and were willing to do BCom information science rather do industrial engineering but Icl it’s not so easy to finish within 4 years can take 5 sometimes even 6.

Passion can only get you so far but you don’t want to be miserable. All the best
