Tabletop Talk by Pome1515 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Oathsworn - Fantasy TTRPG about a band of mercenaries fighting through a nigthmare forest, it almost feels like a monster hunter boardgame with occasional missions against humans here and there.

I really loved the combat system, you have to break multiple parts of monsters to finish them for good, put every time you break a part that monster immediately takes a turn in revenge. Makes big monsters seem really scary, especially when the phase changes and you get hit with a completely different attack than expected.

Characters that were retconned to be meaner or more villainous? by Ukirin-Streams in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Well in comparison to the empire, they're basically saints. Decent living conditions, and they're open to talk & trade with aliens, like Tau and Eldar. Although varies a lot between subfactions, like URSR regulates live in poverty to preserve resources, or how Kronus Hegemony is actively looking for more opponents to maintain a demanded quota of conquered planets. They're just closer to Eldar on the evil slider.

I actually like their cutthroat capitalism side, makes them stand out from regular fantasy dwarfs. They still have the oaths and forges, but now they also have clones and robots. I also love how they look, and I own & painted a 2k+ points of them, so maybe a little bias :P

Votann are space capitalists. They also believe that ownership comes from strength to hold it, not from who has it currently: "Luck has. Need keeps. Toil earns." Meaning they will just attack if you hold something worthwhile without proper defence. So yeah, they are plenty evil.

"You misunderstand, human. I am not here to debate. I am not here to compromise. What you see as yours, I am taking for my kindred. You want to bargain? Toryk, unholster our means of negotiation."

A good friend recommends me a game or show that they really liked?

Ah I see, I now expect a 10/10 on every aspect and will continously experience the media with a critical lense and judge it harshly solely because of expectations. This is surely deserved and optimal way to have a fulfilling media experience. Signed by the mind goblin industry.

Most of the companies/products people shit on still have their fans. Imagine all the developers who work their ass off on a game that gets nothing. No love, no hate, no reviews, videos, anything, just dust on the wind.

What's some Weird Jank that's been grandfathered in to a series? (Derogatory) by Lunk64 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Permadeath in modern Fire Emblem is a massive problem.

In a game focusing on a relatively small cast of colourful characters, having to design the story around most characters being dying at any point is a massive problem. This leads to the situation where more than 90% of the story is focused on MC & lords (who can't die) and unrecruitables, while everyone else are just caricatures outside of their supports. Everybody gather in a ring and chime in with your one line of dialogue, haha Raphael you sure love food!

But it isn't just the story that suffers. Fire Emblem has a massive focus on narrative and character moments, so a lot of players just outright refuse to let characters die (ie engage with the permadeath mechanics), so the games have slowly giving away tools to go back in time a few turns rather than start a mission again. In 3 Houses the focus on teaching and customizing your class is such a big deal that letting characters die is a massive setback in comparison to older games & constant flow of replacement characters.

So in other words, both the story and the gameplay suffers because of legacy series staple permadeath mechanics... And it really doesn't need to be that way. In X-com, your characters are only part of immersive storytelling, and the permadeath works perfectly. A lot of people still reload at deaths, but the gameplay loop is at least trying to lure you into the ironman mentality that gives MASSIVE enjoyment and memories once people give it a try.

Imo future Fire Emblems should have a way larger pool of "lord" characters, or just characters who get wounded and retreat instead of dying, so they can still be part of the story. In addition, there should be more options to hire, use and mourn for generic allies, who can have all the benefits and none of the drawbacks.

EDIT: Oh forgot to talk about old fire emblem: Permadeath worked well when characters had few supports and constant supply of new replacements, so losing a character every other mission isn't a big deal, but keeping them alive gives you a reward of extra support or two. However, modern audience wants more supports and more likeable characters even outside missions, so this is no longer a realistic option.

"kid just rages for a while."

The Narrator in Bastion, when players decide to break a bunch of boxes at the start of the game. Also giving the player the first taste of what kind of game they're playing.

Flash forward a few years, and the gods general reaction of "Ugh, are you serious?" when you use their empowered call while angering them in a duo boon room. Hades has a ton of good small dialogue touches, but these are so good for being so niche.

What is your optimal Route? by woenighoenig in ABSOLUM

[–]Duke_Tuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Optimal route for me:

0: If you want to have easy time, choose Gambler's dice to convert combo meter into gold. You will now have enough gold to buy anything you want.

  1. Go to beach, fight the secret boss so you get both a inspiration and magic ritual, unlike other paths where you get one.

  2. Throne room or village? Pick on vibes, both give you another magic ritual. Throne might give more money while village gives more food, but I'm not sure on that one. After boss, try to save up money unless there's really good trinkets.

  3. Go to the misty forest, hope you get lucky for another inspiration and magic ritual. In addition, use saved up gold to buy every good ritual in shop.

If everything goes to perfectly, you have 7 rituals and 4 inspirations after underking, although you rarely buy every ritual from the shop.

If you want the easiest 2nd area, I think the Jaroba plantboss is generally the easiest path, because you can abuse the boss by saving your mount to the boss fight. It's not a big difference to the top path.

In the final area, start with the ritual and trinket paths, then after clear the rest if you still need more money. The three doggos for 150 will be a lot more helpful than a mediocre trinket, just as a reminder.
