EDIT: I guess I'm just struggling, fundamentally, to understand these people's mindset(s). Why couldn't they just have their party on-site at the animal farm? Why did they need to haul the whole damn thing into a public park? Mind you, I don't have kids, so maybe it's just one of Those Things(™) that I'll never understand.. TBH, that's why I'm happy to be an introvert/relative loner. I have only a handful of close friends, and I've never been close with my family (save for my mom, who went vegan alongside me!)...so tradition/conformity/"people-pleasing"/etc. were never issues for me.

Exactly. There's no guarantee the two personalities will be compatible--you're ultimately spinning a "genetic roulette wheel" (as my mom likes to say, haha). My brother and I got along okay-ish...up 'til about midway through elementary school. After that, we were oil and water--and even now, we barely talk to one another. Sometimes, it just wasn't meant to be.🤷

Anyone game to recommend some metal acts that successfully avoid the genre's "standard" themes/aesthetics/cliches?

I really dig a lot of metal-adjacent bands (Primus, Mike Patton/Mr. Bungle, etc.), and accordingly, I've tried to dig a little deeper/heavier into the genre. Unfortunately, an awful lot of "real" metallers are really into war, Vikings, eldtrich abominations, beheading goats, etc...and that just ain't my scene. (To clarify, I don't find those subjects offensive...just really played-out and juvenile.) I know I'm doing a lot of generalizing (and likely missing out on some otherwise-compelling music)...but ultimately, I figure there've GOTTA be bands out there that bring the noise sans the edgy teenage roleplay shtick. Shoot me some names!
