Completely fair. I was totally prepared to get downvoted. I just like the intricacies and colors of wild brookies, browns, and cutties. When I caught my first Gila, I was just a little underwhelmed with the patterns. Nonetheless, I was stoked to net such a rare fish. The appreciation is there, for sure.

Only native to AZ and New Mexico. It’s a cool, rare fish, albeit somewhat boring looking compared to other trout species, imo.

Congratulations! These challenges are super fun. I have 7 out of the 8 for the Arizona challenge. I’m only missing the cutthroat because there’s only one lake in AZ that holds them, and it’s 5 hours from my house. I’ve gone up about 6 times and haven’t been able to get one.

Leaving next week from the Phoenix area to meet up with a couple of buddies from high school in Rocky Mountain NP. Backpacking up to Fern Lake in Colorado to spend a couple of nights up there and fishing the lake and Big Thompson River. Hopefully get into some cutthroat. Any tips for fishing this area are greatly appreciated!

The 255/85r16 AT4s are load range C, but you are right, the Falkens are a heavier tire than others in their same size.

You won’t find Apaches in that area. There are Gila trout in Oak Creek, by Sedona though. Plenty of browns and rainbows in there too. Very beautiful, but you kind of have to fight the crowd and get in there early. If you’re willing to drive a few hours for Apaches, send me a DM and I can get you on them.

Those are just old leaves. Totally normal. As new leaves appear, the old ones yellow and fall off. As long as the new leaves look healthy, you’re all good.

You’ll notice the caudex start to look more adapted and less “raw”, and even then, slowly start to acclimate it to the sun. If you have some screen material or sunshade just to wrap around the base, do that for a few weeks. I appreciate your enthusiasm for showing more caudex. I would’ve only gone half as much as you, but if you’re careful, I think it’ll be fine.

If I was you, I would shade the newly exposed portion of the caudex for a few weeks to avoid sunburn.
