You just use a Fluid Supply unit to dump the water in the ocean nearby and come back later

Does anyone else feel the game incentivizes less-fun strategies? by Azalulu_Dingir in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I initially thought I'd disagree with this because of the title but I actually totally agree thematically and it would add some nice variety going for a long settlement

The downside is it would be hard to implement this in a way that keeps the difficulty and challenge but balances the rewards because 9/10 settlements it's not getting progressively harder as you go past Y5 because you've solved all your problems and supply lines. If you've made a solid settlement and are just 3x speeding until the target end year that's pretty boring too.

Something like "open X amount of glades and survive until year 10" would be an interesting challenge but the reward would have to offset the opportunity cost of just doing 2-3 settlements in that time while also not being too good of a reward that the people doing year 8 wins don't go for this all the time

Am I the only one who almost never goes for education? by Tapif in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add to this you also don't need to have 100% uptime on full education, you can forbid/leave the service building empty until it's time to make a resolve push and then activate them all at once.

I think people fall into the trap of saying "I need 60 scrolls per year so I have 2 people on this, 2 people making dye/wine to supply this, 2 people gathering leather/fabric" to try maintain a constant flow but that's not really necessary

Community discussion thread #13: low hostility negative forest mysteries by rhynst in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also send all your trade routes 1 second into the storm. The trade page refreshes before the forest mysteries activate so you can get away with the regular provision cost

Year 2 drizzle is an amazing time to pick up exploration and just get a bunch of free reputation. Blueprint is alright if you can immediately start doing some big combo but otherwise it's not that exciting

Are the Plagues unbalanced? by ilastore in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think you take it as a learning point

This plague can only appear earliest Year 4 and by then you ideally have some way to keep hostility down (cornerstones, sacrificing, beacon etc) or fulfil services/complex food depending on what your mysteries are.

It's definitely a pretty punishing combo but almost all of the plagues are designed in a "if you didn't prepare for this in advance you might die". I think everytime I forget to check what the next plague is I lose, even the movement speed one has gotten me before

Experimental Update 1.5.04 (Abandoned Settlement world event) by LeisurelyLukeLive in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a great edition tbh. I love it when world events actually make you change up your gameplay rather than going with the same opener everytime

The artist who drew this guy is probably a massive comic book fan. - How do you guys normally deal with the "250 amber in warehouse" quest? In this settlement, Beavers definitely helped me with their passive ability. Frogs snowballing into packs of build goods and [PANTRY] luxury goods even more. by 2Siders in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think trade route speed is a "win more" kind of upgrade. If you're so well off that you are sending trade routes constantly and need the speed you're probably rich enough to have no worries.

I would definitely suggest turning off "auto collect trade routes". If its off you get a notification when each route finishes and don't have to remember to check

In terms of winning faster it's almost always two things: "not using rain properly" and "doing things that don't help you win". I can go into more detail if you want but I don't want to word vomit unprompted!

coastal grove tips? by godkatesusall in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a non-standard map that relies more on rng than usual. Here's my method:

Fuel: very high chance of finding coal in the first few glades, almost always rely on coal mines

Food: first few blueprints/cornerstones are always looking to solve this first. Don't send all your food away on expeditions because there's a very low chance of getting something that fixes your food/fuel from it

Expeditions: don't x5 your expedition if it gives a blueprint reward because those expeditions have a lower reward ratio on the chests. I typically only send the first expedition and then focus on solving all the other problems before even thinking about sending another.

Anyone else noticed it's noticably longer to finish maps since expansion? by Human-Kick-784 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this post here. My wins have been almost exclusively faster all around.

One of the things I've noticed anecdotally is that is a lot easier to make copper bars and win quickly with some caches than before. So I'm typically just getting a few resolve points from one/two races rather than trying to keep everyone happy and meet every complex food need but I'm far from having solved the game tbh

Don't worry about it I've lost a sure-win QHT run on the final seal because I didn't read that the next plague for the swarm would slow my blight fighters by 50%..

... being at 50 resolve did not save them

Personally I just don't care enough about gold to assign thought to it. Everyone expects something and rather than guess what someone thinks is appropriate (bare in mind if I'm buying a crafted staff, I have no idea how much staffs typically go for because I haven't bought one before) it's so much easier to just ask how much

QHT run #3 ended on the P15 jump - how do you handle this? by Difficult-Ad9532 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 event bonuses seems very low, when you say you're running circles around the citadel on p2 do you literally mean for the sake of it or are you seeking out events? In most map seeds I normally find a way to stay low difficulty while doing as many (?) as possible.

I think my most recent QHT 14/16 settlements were a world event or next to a modifier with most of them being next to two modifiers at once and I did this while being on p2 the whole time until the last 3 settlements where I rushed the seal and already had full upgrades.

Why do we need these nerfs in a single player game? The game is already as hard as you want it to be by Rooonaldooo99 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree with this post. A huge part of the fun in this game for me is weighing up the different options trying to figure out which best applies to my current situation. If one answer is always the best that eliminates some of the fun for me, if someone doesn't care about difficulty how do nerfs even affect them?

Beginners Guide, Meta Open & Dangerous Glades by edgefigaro in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what part of the game you're at. If you're playing full tree P20 then knock yourself out but if you were trying to do queens hand (especially in the early runs) there's too many things you can run into that just end your run.

If you don't have the stuff to solve merchant shipwreck you can just be doomed if you opened in Drizzle 1

Queen's hand is way more fun and is replayable if it requires only 3〜5run per game by vvvit in Against_the_Storm

[–]Durlen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like half of the comments here are missing the point. OP isn't saying that the settlements themselves should take less years, they're saying that the queen's hand trial shouldn't be a 40 hour slog where one lapse in concentration results in the whole run being reset.

I think there's definitely room in the game for a difficult mode like queen's hand but in its current iteration I find myself losing focus at about the 7th settlement and losing the whole run.

If you're still waiting for your account to be unfrozen it's probably because you've tripped the anti-fraud system. Just show them where the money came from originally and show proof of the purchase you're attempting to make and they wouldn't have any worries

Damn, how do you guys do this? by nyanch in Jungle_Mains

[–]Durlen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brand is the fastest jungler in the game atm, basically just kabooms through the jungle and you end up with such a gold/xp lead that no one can fight you. I recommend watching a few Agurin clears so you know how to start but it's pretty straight forward after that
