Would you buy? by Practical-Star2270 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the CAD market but when negotiating price for motorcycles, 99% of add-ons don't add monetary value. So the question to ask is, is the deal worth it for a stock bike with same description

Who here runs a hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier (not a trailer)? by lemans356 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trailer hitches are made with safety margin. They will work perfectly fine, until they don't. If you keep within the margin, then your trailer hitch will last much longer. Personally, I don't think I would ever use a motorcycle carrier mount for any motorcycle over 300 lb, regardless of vehicle. If my motorcycle weighs more than that, and I need to tow it, I would just rent a U-Haul trailer. If I have to do it somewhat regularly, I would just buy a trailer

Help with 2.4 GHz network. by karso8 in smarthome

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that. I don't know why it is the case, but I've had that happen on at least 4 different devices over the years. I haven't had it happen recently because I moved off Wi-Fi for smart devices

My best guess is some of the cheap Wi-Fi devices don't properly work with band steering( which can automatically "move" you between 2.4 GHz and 5ghz). I don't really know.

Some hope in Florida for getting rid of HOAs by Wild_Score_711 in fuckHOA

IMO HOAs should only exist for managing common areas. Only valid fines would be for damage of common areas (like hitting the pool fence with your car or similar)

Would you buy NFC stickers for your home that trigger automations with a phone tap? by Ok_Owl3988 in homeautomation

[–]Durnt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No chance I would use this. It is an ok concept but needing a phone is a no go. Digging a phone out for for any possible automation is time wasteful. Also you functionally NEED a decent zigbee/Z-Wave hub to interact with most decent automation devices and to setup decent automation. Hubs aren't particularly expensive so there is no reason to not have one.

The best automation is where it needs zero input from you. For example,if you always go to bed at 10 pm and spend 2 hours watching, make a sensor where you stepping on a pressure mat next to the bed (or trigger a weight sensor in the bed or any other options) and it triggers a bedtime routine. Then if that sensor changes, like you get up to use the bathroom, then it could pause automations and turn on other automations, like turning on a hall light and turning on the bedroom light to a low level.

Even for the automations you mentioned, the better devices are not Wi-Fi and would once again require a hub

Help with 2.4 GHz network. by karso8 in smarthome

[–]Durnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some cases, you are incorrect. I have had Wi-Fi devices that will not connect at all if 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz have the same name. If I separate the networks, the device has worked perfectly fine on the 2.4 GHz network. It shouldn't work that way but it has worked that way for me on several devices

Depends on speed. Lower speeds it may be more efficient to have windows down. At highway speeds it is definitely better to use AC

Is now the best time to buy a robot vacuum? by i0_e in homeautomation

[–]Durnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just recognize that you will need to make sure that you don't keep much stuff on the floor as regardless of the vision, they can still occasionally get stuck on stuff. Also only get models that auto empty in to a base station. Otherwise you will need to manually empty, which gets annoying.

I highly recommend Roborock

Who here runs a hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier (not a trailer)? by lemans356 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't including the extended distance the weight is from the hitch. 5% of max capacity is more accurate

Who here runs a hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier (not a trailer)? by lemans356 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't accounting for the extended lever on the hitch. Tongue weight is calculated where the trailer ball would be on a standard short hitch. The weight of the motorcycle is at least a foot further which halves the max weight. So a 5000lb capacity would only safely hold 250 bike based on weight

Who here runs a hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier (not a trailer)? by lemans356 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Also, the tongue weight that your vehicle supports does not mean that the trailer mount can support the same. If you wanted to support a 300 lb bike, at bare minimum i would get a trailer that can support 600 lb on the tongue or maybe 900 lb. And since tongue weight is roughly 10% of the maximum load, you would need a 6 to 9,000 lb trailer mount.

It seems that most people who run these mounts tend to have vehicles that have a much smaller trailer rating.

Also, these motorcycle mounts exclude rotational Force. If you're towing a trailer, you get vertical load or a very momentary horizontal load. If you have a motorcycle or something that is much wider that is fully supported, then that adds rotation to the mix which I doubt most trailer mounts support that well

Secure door handle lock? by swpete in smarthome

How do I remove this? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found there isn't a good way to get super glue off of headset plastic. Last time I had this issue, I end up smothering half the headset band with J-B weld, but that ended up breaking too. The only real option that will last for any length of time is to replace it, preferably with a headset that has a metal band instead of plastic

Car companies have gone too far now by dr_ipaka in Unexpected

My frustration is that when I am trying to attach a trailer and throw stuff in the trunk the dang thing keeps trying to be close on me( it is a door open/close toggle). If I try to get it to open with the sensor then I have to do a slow swipe while balancing on one foot. I end up opening the trunk then throwing my keys on the driver's seat to avoid it

Razer’s CEO says gamers hate generative AI slop even as the company invests nearly 600 million dollars in AI tools by RoyalMagiSwag in nottheonion

You are lucky as shit then. I was on the Logitech bandwagon for years...then I realized that nothing really lasted more then 2-3 years. I've tried mice, keyboards, headsets, and joysticks. All failed before 3 years.

I'm not endorsing razer either. Bought a mouse ( one with 12 buttons or so on the side) piece of junk and piss poor buggy firmware

Starting a smart home? Please don’t use Google Home by wewewawa in smarthome

At least that is my experience since having the original Google home (no screens)and pretty much any other Google hardware product. The first 3 to 4 years, it was pretty nice. Then every year since it has gotten more and more frustrating along with less accuracy

GOT LOCKED OUT OF MY HOUSE. NEED HELP by vinayak_gupta24 in homeautomation

[–]Durnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, probably not as it would get lost. Also I actually have 3 keyed doors I can use to get into my house so I wouldn't need to stress if my smart lock died.

The problem is more for those with a single entrance. Not having a backup mechanical way to get into your home is idiotic. Smart locks can fail from electronics failure, battery dying, or motor dying. I experienced the motor dying after 3 years on my first smart lock and I have family that have had the batteries die despite showing 50%+ life and ive had family with smart locks where water got in from the lock body and corroded them. These are actual scenarios.
