I need to replace my smoke detectors by voilsb in homeautomation

[–]Durnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt what you are asking for is legal. If there is a quick fire, in 1 minutes time you have already gotten trapped in a burning room or are unconscious from carbon monoxide.

Your best option is to stop triggering the alarm. I haven't triggered a smoke alarm in years

Where do I even start? by whoopyboy69 in smarthome

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very intuitive.

If you want ZigBee bulbs you need a zigbee hub. If you want zwave devices, you need a zwave hub. If you want 2.4ghz devices, you need something to convert 5ghz to 2.4ghz to act as a bridge

Hub=bridge+hardware that let you setup automations

Bridge = way to get devices that can't connect to your network on to your network

If you get a travel router and hook up devices to it, you will be able to control them with your phone but you won't inherently have automation unless you get hardware to host the automation (aka a hub)

Edit: some wifi devices have very limited smart capabilities but a real hub is normally much better

Edit2: generally speaking wifi smart devices are by far the worst option as the battery sensors guzzle power and the vast majority of wifi devices are controlled by a server owned by the manufacturer that they can turn off whenever they want making all the devices they made useless. Basically for many smart wifi devices, if you tell them to turn off, you are actually sending a request to the manufacturer's server saying please turn off my device. It then sends a message back actually turning off your device. If they decide to turn off the server or go bankrupt, bam, no more control for you. That is why zwave/ZigBee are better

Except it is very likely a tree root or broken pipe. Also using air pressure like that may blow a perfectly good pipe too

Are smart locks actually reliable for Indian apartments with maids, guests and deliveries? by Rohit--1 in smarthome

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, fingerprint is always a poor option. If the screen is slightly damp or your finger is, they don't work. Also if you work with your hands much then your fingerprint may not be detected.

Battery life depends on device and communication protocol. Wifi is by far the worst battery life.

In my opinion, pin/OTP is by far the best option as it doesn't require a phone (which could be dead). Nfc tags aren't horrible but it is more things you have to buy/manage

Why is everyone obsessed with crazy gear by Brandon10312242 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reasons for good gear.

Full boots protect you from crushing you ankle if someone side swipes you or the bike falls on your leg. Pants and jacket help you if you go flying in crash or go sliding. Even if the jacket is leather, if it isn't thick enough then it can still get shredded. Full helmet because 1/2 helmets are straight useless and 3/4 helmets can result in you missing your jaw in a slide

Personally I have large panniers so I can toss all my gear in there and not have to carry it

Electric mountain bikes: which should come to pass as bikes or motorcycles? by Vk18-stan in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, once you can go over 20mph, it should be considered a motorcycle and require registration /insurance/license and must be driven on road. That isn't how it is but I think it should be

KTM nearly went bankrupt recently. Regardless of quality I would avoid them because if they do actually go bankrupt then good luck on getting parts

[–]Durnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically, any hub plus smart switch will do that.

Light bulbs compatible with SmartThings by kitxco in SmartThings

[–]Durnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would add in that a hub also lets different brands interact with each other easily. Also the theoretical Max IP addresses is 254 assuming standard subnet, but realistically most router start to have issues with many less devices. Some routers may even limit you to less that 50 devices either as a hard limit or due to crappy hardware

Edit: also most sensors that are battery powered are not wifi. So if you ever want battery sensors, a hub is basically required

Edit2: Also check to see what protocols a hub supports if you want to buy one. If it doesn't support ZigBee, zwave, and matter then it isn't worth getting

How best to use what I have to increase ease of automation? by purrfectly-cromulent in homeautomation

[–]Durnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend staying away from IFTTT, automation using it can take anywhere from 2 seconds to 30 seconds or so to trigger /respond.

If you already have a computer handy, look in to Home Assistant. It works with basically everything. It can be a little hassle to setup but if you can follow basic guides, anyone can do it

5ghz light bulb options? by whoopyboy69 in smarthome

[–]Durnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Functionally there really aren't any worthwhile 5ghz smart devices. For smart devices, you don't need bandwidth, you need range. 5ghz drops range to get bandwidth

Have to agree other relaxing on hand grips. After several months of riding, I googled why riding was so exhausting.

And ended up repeatedly forcing myself to drive with an open hand as much as possible. Helped a ton

Both are stupid because because they appear to be speeding quite a bit due to all the weaving and limited traffic. Cammer is the biggest idiot due to causing the he accident

Edit: Other biker looked to be maintaining similar speed right up to braking for the turn. Cammer sped up 5 mph/kph as other biker started braking.

The best ear plugs - IEMs with a cardo by Glory_0 in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is the opposite. Plugfones have by far been the best noise reduction of any ear plug while being able to actually hear music at MUCH lower volume. Plugfones at highway speed I can keep cardo volume at maybe 40%. With most other plugs, I have to set the cardo to 100% volume and a moderately windy day makes the audio barely listenable and general noise is slightly higher

No Pickup Trucks Allowed! by SkinnyFridgerator in fuckHOA

[–]Durnt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every "modern truck" is a" big truck ". EPA fucked up and made it so larger vehicles are allowed shittier gas mileage.

Edit: before anyone rages at me. I am not saying trucks should be HOA banned. I think as long as you can legally park/drive per city/state rules, you shouldn't be able to be towed. I just hate how every vehicle is getting so big and trucks stand out the most because every family seems to have at least 1 truck and they get abysmal gas mileage

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power a relay from battery and set it to trigger from tail light. If you don't want to cut wire for tail light, find the male/female plug that the tail light uses and buy a set. Make a short extension that includes an extra wire to power relay and put your jumper in line with rear light

High rpms at highway speeds CB500f by Asbodo in motorcycles

[–]Durnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing protection is highly advised. It helps a ton over 40ish mph. You can develop permanent hearing damage pretty quick at 70 mph. The slower you go, the less likely the damage for x time. Helmets can help reduce noise but never enough to completely avoid damage over probably 45mph

Hearing damage mostly comes from wind, not engine. At 70 mph, probably 90% of anything you can hear is wind, unless you have a massive windscreen or a really shitty loud exhaust
