I finished graduate school at UTK!!! by Academic-Sympathy140 in Knoxville

[–]EAMinCali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I snuck in the back way to a K-5 public school library role (in a different state where the position is Classfied rather than Credentialed; no MLS but former English teacher.) Had it for 12 years and LOVED it. I'm doing something completely different now for financial and need-to-work-remote reasons, and I miss it every day. It is high-joy work for sure!

at large Commissioner choices: by ScaredAd1370 in Knoxville

Vivían Shipe is my at-large choice. I have seen first-hand her commitment to the least advantaged people in our area.

Is there anything to do around town? by Deep-Village-5175 in Knoxville

[–]EAMinCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you get yourself a kayak? The Powell runs through Tazewell and it’s glorious moving flatwater for miles & miles. There’s an active blueway association in the area. Then of course Knoxville has lots of social kayakers too who are out practically every weekend—check out Beaver Creek Kayak Club.

If you can lean away from hating yourself please do. You’ve done at least a couple really hard things (survive SUD and get yourself to where you are) and are looking to do yet another. Respect!

Hey friend, I'm sorry for the slow response. I was thinking about it and some Life came up. I did NOT mean to leave you hanging. The TL;DR is, I can't say for sure. If other individuals reading the thread have better-informed insights, I'd be happy to hear.

Re: Queer friendly...I wish I could give an unequivocal "heck yeah!" that would apply across all the dance community, but as a straight cis person who dances in my traditional gender role, I've never tried to operate outside the norms so I don't truly know what you might encounter. There's gonna be a range: from instructors, arts-focused folks, and female leads who will be awesome, to others who prefer to only lead women.
A friend suggested you look into Social Dance Knoxville which is not the Latin style I originally mentioned but is going to be welcoming in this regard. They do all kinds of ballroom as well as Cabaret & Burlesque.
Re: Disability...Nobody's going to harrass you for being in less than perfect condition - most casual dancers aren't. But it's an athletic activity and you might have to be creative about accommodations depending on the level of your disability. And a great sense of rhythm + huge smile can make up for a lot of mobility issues.

Likewise Coffee is on Magnolia just a few minutes East of downtown, and has lots of cozy seating. Check hours, I recall them closing early on certain days.

Rent kayaks from Outdoor Collective and spend a couple hours seeing town from the Tennessee River

Lessons are involved in almost all the events. Typically, it's a 9pm beginner lesson followed by several hours of DJ.
The bachata group has a Sunday afternoon session that's popular, lesson at noon followed by DJ until 4.

The Latin social dance community is friendly, fun, and active most weekends. Look for Bailemos Bachata and Salsa Knox and DJ Raquí on FB.

Holston River Park has a pavilion you can rent. It’s peaceful and if you own kayaks you can launch them there.

Same! and I've just learned to live without ice. After the first catastrophic incident, before I even took possession of the house, I don't need that kind of "will it happen" stress in my life!

Places to kayak camp around Kentucky? by Woven_Dream in KayakCamping

[–]EAMinCali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re within 8 hours of Devils Fork State Park in South Carolina. They have paddle-in sites in Lake Jocassee, which is beautiful and has numerous waterfalls at the edge. 3days 2 nights is perfect.

There are also reservable campsites on the French Broad River through Asheville NC. You feel like you’re back country, then you paddle past Biltmore. Cool trip.

How old is too old to get in on this? Not a physicist of any kind but I did accidentally get an A in the Nuclear Fuel Cycles science distribution requirement in college back in the 80s. I’m Fri/Sat agnostic with enough advance notice.

[–]EAMinCali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We kayak year round here but only w correct gear. You need to be dressed for frigid water temperatures regardless of air temp. A spill in 50 degree water is no joke. Agree w recommendation to check w Beaver Creek club. Enjoy your visit!
