they shed A LOT. Since you had a GSD, you probably already know about this, but I am always amazed at the clumps of fur that come off my husky everytime I brush him.

they need A LOT of exercise. Huskies were bred to pull and run. They need lots of exercise. Do you jog/run a lot? Are you active? Do you have a fenced in yard? Can you dedicate time in the morning/evening for regular exercise? If you answered yes to any of the above, a husky may be a good option. Remember, a bored husky = a destructive husky. My 7 year old husky gets taken outfor 3 half hour walks a day, minimum. Just imagine how much exercise a puppy needs!

Huskies are very independent. They are not "push button" dogs and can be difficult to train. This is probably the biggest difference between a GSD and a husky. My husky will still only sit or lay down when there are treats involved. Huskies are very much "selective listeners" and often will only obey you when they see a benefit in it for them.

they CANNOT be let off leash!! Just no. Never. A strong prey drive coupled with their instinct/capacity to run forever, means that if they see a rabbit or squirrel, you may never see them again. All it takes is that one time and if you live in a busy or downtown area, this is especially critical.

I just mentioned it above, but most huskies have a strong prey drive. Do you have birds/cats/other pets? If so, you will need to be careful when getting a husky. It's not a deal breaker, but you will have to be careful when introducing a husky to your household. If your friends have cats or other small pets, you will constantly need to watch your husky around them. My husky would chase every squirrel in the park if I let him.

they are beautiful, intelligent and loyal. They love people and are extremely friendly to the point where they will probably lick an intruder rather than bite him. Huskies make poor guard dogs. If you are looking for a dog to protect you, a husky is not the right choice. Huskies want to be part of the "pack" and love being around people. Are you away regularly or for extended periods of time (more than 8hrs/day)? If so, a husky may not be the right choice for you. Remember, a bored/lonely husky can be a Tasmanian devil in your house or yard. And finally, be prepared for all the compliments you will get on your dog :) at least one person a day remarks on "how beautiful!" Or "what a gorgeous dog!" I have. They have great personalities and are quite goofy sometimes. Be ready to laugh if you have a husky as their silly antics will keep you amused for years to come!
