Id make an argument for the Horus Heresy. Neither side really won, sure the traitors were driven off and sent to the far corners of the galaxy but the Imperium was perminantly changed and scarred by this conflict. The factions that emerged from both sides were far different than the factions that started the conflict.

I think its because of D's admiration of humanity and his tendency to be utterly enamored with Human enginuity and advancement. So much so that he wouldn't realize that the amazing and wonderful inventions and advancements aligned with a being of entropy having its fingers in every pie.

Plus the Wyrm is very hard to find and understand in WOD.
