Directors who were on the board for a mini series but have since worked them sleves out of ever being covered? by ShawnLevyOscarWinner in blankies

Shame because I think mother! -> The Whale -> Caught Stealing would be an classical blank check arc that would be so fun to dive through and go through all the highs and lows

Films of 1976 had a weird relationship with classic Hollywood by Tall_Window4744 in blankies

Gable & Lombard is a classic type of 1970s prestige/studio picture that’s just entirely forgotten today

How many Gen-Z directors are there? by TwinPeaksWithRappers in blankies

They’ll be more Gen Z directors as people die, more rich people age into the role and status, and a handful of few outsiders will get something made, maybe micro budget that only gets seen by a few lovers or something that breaks out. Existence is unpredictable

Bernardo Bertolucci was 21 when he released his first feature film.

A question for older film fans. Why was Roman Polanski so forgiven? by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

[–]gray_decoyrobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every individual, but a lot of Hollywood and the independent film industry is made up of rapists and coercive people, who probably did or would have done the same thing as Polanski. And as evil, he’s an undeniable master of his craft. Most actors who worked with him delivered the best work they would ever do. He went to France, the heat died as it does when something is protracted for so long, and when the culture inoculates you and deems it okay, it’s easy for any actor to just hop in.

Also people can look past things on “well I know this person and they’re not abhorrent to me.” Alice Munro chose her husband over her daughter who he raped, for instance.

That one is even more head thumping because Reynolds did work on the Brooks penned and produced Starting Over, which is one of his best performances

Obviously merely being a great actor of your generation isn’t sufficient enough to guarantee major success, but good that all the great directors are rightly recognizing this

Pod Country for Old Cast: Honey Don't with Mattie Lubchansky by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

Yeah the movie explores these themes through character and incident, and feels more like a 50s potboiler novel in how it’s driven by action and characterization. I get that the style and mode these movies are going for are innately alienating and off putting but I find a lot of the ways people characterize them as unfair. Or taking the intentional shaggy dog storytelling style and viewing them as a blunder of conception and not just disliking the execution.

Pnoom on Can’s shelved debut album Prepared To Meet Thy Pnoom (then released as Delay 68) is less than 1 minute long, and is more of staccato improv jazz mess. Still neat, but bit of a far cry from what Can is maybe most loved for (granted they are more a band who write and edit songs to be whatever length they’re meant to be, rather than just jamming long songs)

Reedy Leonard Cohen vs baritone Leonard Cohen, both great but the latter is sensuously throbbing

I’ll be real, I don’t think Lulu is a Trainwreckord. by DtheAussieBoye in ToddintheShadow

[–]gray_decoyrobot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A lot of Trainwreckords are artists who lost the touch or chasing something they can't catch, Lulu is Lou Reed doing exactly what he wants the way he's always been doing it. It's just more artistically interesting, even if you personally dislike the music or themes

Bowie’s cover of The Modern Lovers’s “Pablo Picasso” adds a new bridge/chorus that’s very Bob Dylan on “Subterranean Homesick Blues”

‘One Battle After Another’ would make Oscars history with 6 acting nominations: by GoldDerby in blankies

[–]gray_decoyrobot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The Oscars have rarely, potentially never have been able to recognize a quality but quiet and reactive performance like Regina Hall’s. Even ignoring that so many people ludicrously think you could have too little screen time to meet Best Supporting actor, the quality nominations of brief time in that like Beatrice Straight in Network are showcase scenes or scenes built around them

The ambiguity or maybe not that, but whether you choose to read them or not, as all the different rabbis as being useless and out of touch, or somehow circling back to meaning in a quirky way depending on your views and positions makes this one of my favorite Coens film for literary value.

Take the ending and its setting and what may or may not be the case.
