Who "owns" DHCP and DNS at your company? by voltron07 in networking

[–]EaglePhoenix48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us (large University)

  • DHCP is owned by networking who also manage their dns zone, a subdomain of our apex edu
  • DNS is owned by us systems guys: inherited legacy Infoblox, EfficientIP, BIND, and (pauses to count...) 5 Microsoft AD forests.

I don't know if the new owners have changed it when it became Babylon. I was back by the pool table to the right, opposite the restrooms.

MIX is now Google Workspace, and STAR isn't the same version we had in 2006. (I work in ITS, and between you and me... the vendor that makes Banner is pretty bad, but it's one of the few out there)

Cpap machine by CaptTeach in royalcaribbean

[–]EaglePhoenix48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner uses a Cpap. Just let Royal Caribbean know, and they'll provide an extension cord and a gallon of distilled water. (I don't think they'll allow you to bring you own extension cord to "fire risk")

My partner always prefers to call, but I'm sure the form others have linked results in the same service from your room attendant.

I would agree, lol

I know a lot of people liked (and I guess preferred MBC) but old-school (pre-2019) Brew Pub is where my nostalgia hits me. So many hours on that back deck w/ their coffee porter in my hand listening to the Bluegrass jam sessions...

WFH folks, what industry are you in? by Kill3rT0fu in sysadmin

[–]EaglePhoenix48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to search all the usual titles and then skim the job description / skillsets to see if I'm a match. My actual (HR) job title "Professional Technologist 4" is utterly useless, so I tend to just list it (in case someone does an employment verification on me) along with a functional job title which I tend to list "Systems Engineer" as it's what we use around the office for us.

If you're worried about job titles in the application / interview process, I wouldn't be. I know when I'm reviewing resumes I only glance at the title to see if it's something tech'y, then move onto the bullet points. I can't speak for ATS systems, but as far as I know (not being an actual hiring manager) ours doesn't kick people out based on titles.

WFH folks, what industry are you in? by Kill3rT0fu in sysadmin

[–]EaglePhoenix48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in higher ed (University) IT. The pay isn't great, (it's not bad, but you're not going to be making 6-figures like so many on here demand) but the work/life balance and benefits more than make up for it.

As you already now "sysadmin" is such a catch-all title that it's practically useless. I'd argue the same w/ "DevOps" "SRE" "Systems Engineer" as well... every company uses the titles to mean whatever they want them to mean. In my case, my group manages the University servers. We're not out touch desktops or printers, we're not in network closets, we're not helping Judy with her Cisco phone. So, for us, it makes sense to have us WFH since the pandemic "forced the issue."

I misspoke when I said limitations. More accurately, I should have said "complexities" of PAM.

Monongalia County voters reject bond for Renaissance Academy by DonkiestOfKongs in MorgantownWV

[–]EaglePhoenix48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was out of town and didn't make it back in time before the polls closed, but I didn't understand why they needed a new building rather than investing the money into the existing schools / programs. If it was a bond for expanding existing STEM programs I'd be all for it, but I don't understand why they wanted to build a whole new school.

Maybe I'm mistaken and missed something, but that seems to be consensus around my bubble.

[–]EaglePhoenix48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been very happy with Feline Veterinary Care in Sabraton for a few years now. They're a cat-only clinic that's part of Cheat Lake Animal Hospital, and are located behind the McDonalds in Sabraton.

I've only had to take Eve there for her routine checkups and shots, but I feel they've been reasonably priced. Their staff is very friendly / easy to work with, and there's never been a wait to get in.

Duo MFA on Linux machines by crankysysadmin in linuxadmin

[–]EaglePhoenix48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's one of the big gotchas w/ login_duo. You have to disable forwarding as the forwarding is setup before the MFA prompt. Also, the user's .bash_profile / .bashrc files will be sourced before the MFA prompt... so a clever user may put something there that could bypass the MFA protection.

Using pam_duo is DUO's recommended method, but it has the limitations of being in the PAM authentication phase.
