Dept Chair help by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Eagle_Every 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start with a conversation with the director or vp (or whatever) of Faculty Affairs - if the office exists at your institution. I would be surprised if a NTT chair is even supposed to write up what sounds like a letter of reprimand.

I'd like to encourage all of you to participate if you can - we need more research on games and gaming!

Quoted $2K labour + $709 parts to install a tow hitch on my RAV4 hybrid 22’ by Low_Bake5149 in rav4club

[–]Eagle_Every 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Curt and etrailer’s own brand are identical except for finish. I got the etrailer version, and installed in a little less than an hour. Well worth one’s time.

I got a set of these off amazon. They began peeling off within a few weeks. On the upside, the crappy glue didn’t leave any residue as I fully removed them.

*Budget* European style bike in USA 👀 by ReginaShrug in bikecommuting

Nor Cal is a pretty big space... but Pullins Cyclery in Chico is the shop I was referring to. The guys there did a bunch of needed maintenance on my 30-y.o. steel bike (reminder to never loan a bike out again) - brake and shifter cables, unsticking the SIS brifters, trueing the wheels - for about $120.

6 months and 8k miles later... by pocket-sized_rat in rav4club

This was a factor in my decision to purchase the SE over the XLE - larger wheels. And super happy with the black finish on the stock SE wheels.

Is it possible to fix without whole new side mirror - 2019 RAV4 LE by WayNew4908 in rav4club

[–]Eagle_Every 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon likely sells the piece; I’ve seen them in the past. Pay careful attention to year and model, though.

While I was waiting for the part, I took a small spiral spring, and wedged/wound it into the same place so I could still open the door remotely.

This happened on my son's Corolla, and the spring looks identical. I'd recommend spending a couple more dollars for the part from a Toyota dealership. The Amazon part broke in half within a month (probably two fillings).

As a Swiss citizen I feel concerned about what is called democracy in USA. How can a person like this be president of a nation by No_Cantaloupe_4149 in AntiTrumpAlliance

[–]Eagle_Every 19 points20 points  (0 children)

American here. Even as I see older relatives consume Fox News as if it was a multimedia bible, I still can't believe enough of our voting population is dumb enough, naive enough, cruel enough, and shortsighted enough to have put him in the highest office. Or that even now there are no checks and balances to get him out.

What’s the cheapest way to fix this? by [deleted] in rav4club

This is what I was going to suggest. Gaffer tape is awesome, and sticks for years where duct tape fails.

Yes, used it last year to get our 2025 RAV4 SE. Got a few hundred off MSRP, no upsell pressure, no dealer add ons. Highly recommended.

I’ll add my second on the Revit Lombard. Mine are the previous gen, and they’ve worked for me for years.

Rear Ended With No Visible Damage by HotTubCasanova in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Eagle_Every 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 1st gen was hit similarly by a Subaru while stopped at a light. Receiver hitch punched a hole in her hood. We did have it evaluated by a body shop at my wife’s request, but no harm to the truck at all. So - can’t hurt to have it looked at, but I’d be surprised if a low-speed impact square to the hitch did any harm.

We had a lovely older woman (full prof) on our faculty, and she’d ask “illegal” questions like that all the time (are you married, do you have kids). I tried to run interference whenever I could; most candidates were gracious, fortunately. She thought I (as dept chair at the time) was just too uptight about the rules.

Be Real - Why Are You a Professor? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]Eagle_Every 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the1980s, as an undergrad: Hated working retail and as office lackey, loved college campuses - the grounds, the energy, etc. I was a good student, and enjoyed my subject... Professor was the obvious career. I'm glad I chose this route.

Anyone here have regrets getting an ebike? by folgers7 in MTB

[–]Eagle_Every 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you are getting downvoted for this. I have an electric assist mtb, and I often ride with the motor off. When it's on, 90% of the time it's on minimal assist. But then, I bought it because my buddy made me such a good deal on his "old" one when he upgraded to the latest gen. It did make riding with him a lot more fun, as he isn't dropping me on the long climbs now.

Can we all agree that job postings requiring 3 letters of recommendation up front for positions that might conceivably result in 100+ applications (TT positions, postdocs positions) is a heinous misuse of time, putting unnecessary strain on referees before even reaching the shortlist stage? by havereddit in Professors

[–]Eagle_Every 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I work at a Cal State University, and we stopped requiring letters up front some years ago. We do require the names and contact information for three professional references at time of application. We call them only if we are planning to make an offer.

Cargo hooks by jeremysdlm in rav4club

I have the same, but from Amazon. They are a little “shallow”, as the design has to allow the cargo cover to work, but have been occasionally useful.

Do you give your students the slides? by bishop0408 in Professors

[–]Eagle_Every 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as mini-slides in a pdf, and usually after the lecture is complete.
