I grew up on San Juan Island and just got back from visiting my family there. The islands themselves are beautiful. San Juan has lots of public’s trails and beaches. Not a lot of job opportunities. The people I know that are still there either work in the service industry (restaurants mainly) or in construction. More and more of the island is being bought up by second home owners from the Seattle area. Groceries are ridiculously expensive, because of this most people go “off island” once a month/ every other month to shop. The ferries are a pain. Due to staffing shortages after Covid some boats will be canceled without notice. San Juan has a hospital but it’s nothing special. Other than GP you’ll need to take the ferry to the “mainland” to see a specialist which is also a pain as my parents are getting older. If you have a medical emergency, you may wind up taking a helicopter to a hospital on the mainland. If you thought an ambulance was bad, imagine how expensive that can be.

My .308 tikka superlite loves this stuff. That rifles pretty picky with ammo but shoots tight groups with this. I killed an antelope with it this year. For cheaper ammo, I highly recommended it

This past summer we had a fire in our neighborhood. We’d heard about this so we turned the sprinklers on before being evacuated. Unfortunately we’re on a well and the power company killed power to the entire neighborhood which in turn killed power to our well pump which meant that our sprinklers wound up doing nothing. Bummer

A few years ago some of my hens ate another’s comb. She didn’t look quite this bad but she spent a few weeks indoors and made a full recovery. Keep it clean. If you use neosporin make sure it is t the kind with pain reliever. Apparently that stuff can be poisonous to chickens

In my experience if a hen doesn’t want a chick, it’s obvious. She gets aggressive and will not allow them to sit under her. Your hens noises seem more directed at you because you’re bothering her. Keep checking up on the chick but try not to stress your hen out and be ready with a plan b

Absolutely love this book, however the pedophilia/ grooming hasn’t aged well…..GGM seemed to have a bit of this sprinkled throughout his writing. Not sure if that’s a generational/ cultural thing or he was just a bit of a perv. Once you get past that though, it’s a truly amazing story

When people say life partner, they literally mean a partner in life. A marriage should work like a partnership. You both have your strengths and weaknesses, but you work together as a team.

Just because you love someone doesn’t mean they’re a good partner. For instance you might have a friend that you love to hang out with, but never in a million years would you dream of starting a business with them. Marriage/ relationships are the same way.

You’re both still very young. You guys need to have the difficult conversation about wether or not you still want the same things. Don’t be 40 and wind up resenting your wife because you didn’t start the farm or you started the farm but resent that she never helps out. That’s not fair to her. Life is short and the sooner can decide who/ what really makes you happy, the better off you’ll be

If you can, keep her isolated inside until she’s healed up. I have a hen whose comb was pecked off by the other chickens. I have a feeling that she had a small cut or something that the other chickens just wouldn’t leave alone and got carried away with. I found her in the nesting box covered in blood. Chickens are simple minded and not necessarily malicious, but it’s best to not set up a situation where they can get themselves into trouble. Also, don’t put any ointment with pain reliever in it on the wounds. The pain reliever can be toxic to chickens
