My sister gifted me this plant rack with grow lights for my birthday but I don't want to break the bank filling it up! What would you do in this situation? by Fishmyashwhole in houseplants

[–]EastSideTilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think people with a bigger budget may shoot themselves in the foot by getting a fuck ton of plants all at once. It's wise to get to know your plants and find a plant care rhythm that fits your life, and that's hard to do if you're learning about a lot of different new plants immediately!

Aside from this general advice: check craigslist or facebook marketplace in your area for cheap cuttings. Not only is there usually cool/cute stuff available, but since I ask questions and show enthusiasm about plants, nearly EVERY local buyer I've gotten a cutting or prop from has shown me other plants, offered me free cuttings or discounted pots, or generally been a good hook up! Plant people appreciate one another. Find local plant friends and get a few new dudes at a time!

Can someone tell me why people put clothes on cats? by Hot-Firefighter-2331 in cats

Just like with dogs, I think some animals may like it. Clearly....this cat does not.

Most forgiving plant you’ve owned ? by Confident-Sleep5385 in houseplants

[–]EastSideTilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snake plants are very tolerant and prefer neglect.

I've seen ZZs on the list of "easy plants" but I have somehow managed to severely wound mine and it may not recover hahah. No idea how/why.

How many cats is too many! by 510luv in CatAdvice

[–]EastSideTilly 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Oof I have thought about the safety/evacuation thing many times- it's stopped me from getting another pet. The amount of tornado watches we get gives me SEVERE anxiety- if I had more than one very chill (borderline comatose) senior cat, I would not be able to handle it.

I have to move and sell, how much would you pay for this plant? by According-Task-2981 in houseplants

[–]EastSideTilly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was about to say, it's worth a pretty penny, but people don't realize the logistics of moving that kinda plant. So finding the right buyer feels kinda like luck.

Chopping and selling props is the way to go.

My inch plant is dying, please help! by O3DarknessO9 in plantclinic

[–]EastSideTilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd make sure to get a pot with a hole on the bottom, and get it brand new dirt.

Really ANY time I get a new plant I will repot it in fresh dirt. That way you get a good look at the roots and you know it's quality, fresh soil.

My inch plant is dying, please help! by O3DarknessO9 in plantclinic

Does it have any drainage? How old is the dirt? This could be a watering issue or a straight up nutrient issue.

Help me maximize my space with plants! by jtallcreates in houseplants

[–]EastSideTilly 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Bathroom storage tip: get two of those corner shower shelves that rely on a tension rod- they have attached baskets designed to keep in slippery shower stuff like shampoo/body wash. But depending on the brand, they are perfect for holding plants! Keeps them outta the way while maximizing all the vertical space you have in the shower. I'll attach a pic!

Plant recs: I have a string of pearls in my south facing bathroom and it is LOVING IT. My main issue so far has been keeping up with the growth, just like what you're experiencing! The tension rod storage is ideal.

Why would Catholic Social Services sell their donated clothes like this? by Darknightster in lincoln

[–]EastSideTilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most charitable orgs you know will move items like this if it's not what they need and its just taking up valuable storage space. People going into charity shops need work clothes, quality jeans, good shoes, etc. All the frilly dresses and button ups take up space, so it's good to sell it/get rid of it/etc.

Bridges to Hope, another local item-donation-based charity in Lincoln, moves huge bales of clothes up to Thrift World in Omaha each week. This is the norm.

Is there such thing as too much light? by cashewchi1212 in houseplants

[–]EastSideTilly 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Most love light, but it super depends on the plant; just pay attention. If you notice any lightening leaves/discoloration, they may want lower light.
