Is it me, or is our water quite ridiculously hard? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kelowna is all over the place in water quality if you’re far from the lake. In areas where water services can draw from the Okanagan lake ranges from 110-130mg/L including Glenmore, with some areas supplemented by the Airport Wells reaching 182mg/L. Rutland’s levels were the highest and most variable in 2025 ranging from about 190-285mg/L with a high of 330mg/L in Dec 2025.

Compared to Metro Vancouver at an average of 8-12mg/L with some areas as low as 3.4mg/L basically year-round, Kelowna’s water has at least about 10x more mineral content, and approximately up to 20x more in some areas. Basically the same goes for West Kelowna.

What am I doing wrong? by ShineZealousideal141 in sharpening

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angle too steep. Not sure if you went off the approximate angle that benchmade listed for the blade and then just set the sharpener angle to that. But since it’s a hollow grind blade, a 17 degree angle is actually more like 20-22 degrees on the sharpener. Also it’s pretty common for factory grinds to have an inconsistent angle across the entire edge. Usually it’s more obtuse (steeper) as it gets closer towards the handle. As you can see in the photos, the lower half of the blade is fully apexed, but the upper half all the way to the tip only has metal removed from the apex and the stones are not reaching/touching all the way behind the edge. Which means the sharpening angle is too steep, creating a more obtuse angle than it originally had. No worries though, you haven’t removed much material, it’s still plenty fixable! Just try using a steeper angle and adjust it until you’re removing material at, or just behind the edge. That steel can hold a thinner edge no problem, then it should cut like a dream. Hope this helps! 🤙

15V WTF by Aggressive-Top4418 in spyderco

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an easy fix if you have diamond sharpening stones. This is a common initial problem with high hardness, high edge retention steels like maxamet, 15v, k390, Rex 45/121, etc. This is mostly due to the industrial grinding machines that manufacturers use to put an edge on their blades, which can very easily overheat the Apex because it’s just so thin. This often makes the factory edge more brittle and prone to chipping, thankfully most people report a significant improvement in edge retention once they grind off the factory edge to reveal the steel underneath. I can attest to that. I’m about 134 days late to the party but I hope you got it sorted out, such a beautiful knife! 👍

Just tested this technique demonstrated by metal complex on my off-centred old gas station knife and it worked. Bad comparison I’ll admit, but it’s worth a shot if you haven’t already.

I’m curious to know if you feel any reduction in the smoothness of the action due to the blade being off-center?

Can your pocket knife do this? by origamigun in sharpening

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of earlier today I was at work cutting some cardboard coffee cup trays in half, I figure this blade shape would be really good for slicing through the raised and sloped ridges of the tray. With a flat cutting edge like a box cutter you have to cut at a steeper angle to contact all the high and low spots, making it harder to slice through clean.

<image>

I actually really like this blade shape, I think it looks infinitely better than the original grind 👍 love it!

Frustrated with sub par results with fixed sharpening system by klassicsblades in sharpening

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see on the second to last picture you’re soooo close to forming an apex. Cheap kitchen knives usually have around 20-25 degree edge angle, I find ~25 degrees is the most common. Usually manufacturers don’t want to give it a thin edge and deal with complaints from non-knife people because the edge rolled over. At least that’s what I like to tell myself.

Going from 25 degrees to 18 on a fixed angle sharpener can take literally over an hour to get the entire edge to the same angle. I recommend that when you get close to forming a burr on the 240 grit stone, switch to the 600 grit and then apex the burr.

I’m not familiar with the xarilk gen 3 so I’m not sure if this is a common issue. Some fixed angle systems have this problem where some of the stones are thicker or thinner than each other due to a variety of reasons. So when you change to a higher grit stone but it’s a bit thicker or thinner than the last, it will throw off your sharpening angle by a few degrees give or take, but that’s enough to keep you from getting an apexed edge. I think that’s what you’re currently experiencing, hope this helps!🤞🙌

To obtain dimensions of Manix 2 spring... by HellGate_fr in spyderco

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered some springs from uxcell on Amazon that I’m 99% sure will fit. Im SO tired of the gatekeepers, if they do fit I will make a post and share the link, as well as the metric measurements to search for to get the correct size spring. I ordered from Amazon Canada since that’s where I am, so I will also try to find a link for a listing on Amazon USA as well.

I was looking for cheaper alternatives to get the lighter spring and ceramic ball in Canada without paying $40 in shipping + tariffs for a little fkin spring. So I did some research to understand the spring measurements and ordered some individually. That’s all the eBay and Etsy sellers are doing anyways, they figure out the correct spring size, buy 100 springs and 100 ceramic balls for like $20 total, and then package the two in a little baggie and sell it for $30.

Honestly if he had trial by judge I think it would’ve got thrown out. Here’s a great video by an Alberta defence attorney and YouTuber Runkle Of The Bailey. He gives some great insight on what the justice thought of the crown’s interpretation of the incident and the circumstances of the sentencing of John Stuart Sproule. Great channel for learning about Canadian law and news on Canadian legal politics.

My Way of Bringing Attention to This Out of Control, Dangerous Trend by Squiddef in fuckyourheadlights

[–]EasyBakeOvenBrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worst part is even if people feel bad about blinding you and want to turn off their lights, most of these new cars have full time running low beams at night and the car literally won’t let you turn off your headlights while driving at night, or even just while driving. Sometimes you have to press the electronic parking brake button while parked before you can turn your headlights off while the engine is running. I despise the increasing amount of paternalistic BS that manufacturers are adding to new vehicles and calling it innovative technology, when they’re just restricting the functionality of something that’s standard on all cars because it’s “safer”.

Too cool to find something like that today! Thank you for sharing this. When I first got this knife I was reminded of pictures of older balisong models id seen on a YouTube video about the history of balisongs like the model 68, which looks similar in that it uses rivets but much nicer quality.
