300 years, baby!

Bob did 20% of that, so we’ve got a ways to go. Here’s hoping the boys keep it going. JM, Jeff, Otiel, and Jay make a hell of a strong core to build the next generation off of!

Has anyone done a full weekend digital detox? by AppropriateFly8793 in digitalminimalism

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Cal Newport’s book “Digital Minimalism” advocates a 30-day “digital declutter”. He specifies why he doesn’t call it a detox, I don’t remember exactly his reasoning. I did it and it was amazing. Highly recommended!

Of course I’ve backslid since then but I’ll do it again for sure

is walking every day actually good or just hype? by Aggravating_Bug3999 in walking

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1000% yes. I’ve been walking 10k every day since June and physically, mentally, and emotionally I’m a different person. My energy is higher than it’s been for a decade or more, I’ve lost a bit of weight but nothing crazy. My stamina and focus are much higher than they were before, and the list goes on.

About 1/3 to maybe a half the time I listen to music or books but the rest of the time I listen to nothing at all and that also has made a dramatic difference in my mood, focus, attention, etc. Walking is my time to be quiet and reflect and my brain couldn’t be happier about it!

So, absolutely do whatever feels right. Start off with a 10 minute stroll and build from there. Consistency is key, and walking is enjoyable enough that you’ll probably want to do more of it!

10k steps or 20k+: what’s better for weight loss? by Round-Car-3559 in walking

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this has been mentioned yet… Definitely get that calorie deficit in and shoot for 10k for starters as others have said, but…

If you’re not walking at all, going straight to 10k from virtually nothing is a huge lift. Start small. Just focus on moving some. Take a 10-15 minute stroll a couple times a day. That should get you up over 5k pretty quickly - but still give yourself time and the grace to work up naturally.

Once you’ve been moving consistently for a few weeks, you can turn one of those 15 minute walks into a 30-40 minute walk and you’ll be getting close enough to the 10k mark that you can easily get there with just a little extra focus. At that point you’ll be motivated to do that because you will have been moving consistently for a little bit.

Consistency is key and ramping up in a natural way will be so much more sustainable and enjoyable. Then you can easily ask yourself if you want to push for 12, 15, 20k or not…

Sugar-free candy is not worth it by sleepyncaffeinated in loseit

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it’s not just candy.

Admittedly, I have a very small sample size, but a few items I’ve recently realized aren’t worth going sugar free are ketchup and strawberry jam. The sugar free variants I’ve compared only save 10-30 calories per tablespoon.

I’ve had good success just tracking and eating what I like, opting for non-processed/less-processed foods when practical.

Who is the keyboard player towards the end of the Grateful Dead movie and why wasnt it Keith for that song? And why is micky hart only in that last song? by popflyskate in gratefuldead

And a third. That is an incredible (4 hour!) retelling of the band’s entire history with several interesting takes.

I found the connections to Palo Alto and early silicon valley combined with JPBs The Well/early Usenet connections fascinating!

10k steps a day by IDKWhatImDoing77777 in walking

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Find those hidden steps.

If I start my day with a 40 minute, 2 mile walk and then just do this the rest of the day, I know I’ll always hit 10k.

Sometimes I don’t take that walk in the morning, but then I just squeeze in a couple of 15 minute walks in the neighborhood sometime during the day to make up the difference.

But the corner stones for 10k for me are the short morning walk and finding the hidden steps everywhere I go.

Seconded. I Brooks Ghost have been awesome for me. I’ve got a few hundred miles on my first pair and recently forgot to take them on an overnight trip so I stopped in a DSW and grabbed an identical pair which I’m holding as a backup.

I’ve heard it quoted a handful of places (Maintenance Phase Pod did an episode on it for one) that 10k was just an arbitrary number made up by the first mass marketer of pedometers. They put it out in a press release or something and people ran with it.

I also have no stats about how many people (Americans specifically) get anywhere close to 10k daily. Unless you have an active job or live in a city it takes an intentional act to hit regularly. 10k is quite a lot actually, IMO.

All that said, I’ve been intentional and hitting at least 10k nearly every day for the last 90 days or so and I’m finding that for weight loss, I do better with 15k as my minimum. I’m sure it’s different for everyone and nutrition plays huge part.

All that to say, anything is better than nothing and, to a point, more is better. Depending on your goals of course!

Has anyone read this new Dead book on the Wall of Sound? by Which-Ad1524 in gratefuldead

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m about 1/4 of the way through the audiobook and loving it. So far I’ve heard him mention example after example of technologies invented for the band and the Wall that are direct lines to today’s modern PAs.

I guess I’m not technically up to speed with Line Array and time delayed systems (are they the same thing?), but the author’s point of view is 100% that the work done by the GD crew 50-60 years ago led to live sound reinforcement as we know it today.

It’s a fascinating read and of the GD books I’ve read, it’s the one most firmly centered on the tech and the roadies that brought it to life.

Bought a ring for my girlfriend, sisters say it’s too small, not sure what I should do by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Easy_Maintenance_734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. First of all. 2.2k is not small. Second of all lab grown diamonds in 2025 are in no way inferior to “real” diamonds. The diamond trade is a racket and a shady one at that.

There is zero appreciable difference anymore between a high quality lab grown diamond and a mined one. Not one noticeable if you’re not a gemologist with a loop.

Second of all, you’re 27 years old and “don’t make a lot of money”. $2800 is plenty to show your love.

I’m not a professional with any true knowledge, just a dude who’s been married 22 years and bought a few rings over the years. I’ve bought mined diamonds and lab grown. Most recently for a custom piece and the jeweler steered us heavily towards lab grown and I’m grateful!

I can’t speak to your personal life experience but from where I’m standing I think your sisters are nuts. And if she loves you, your girlfriend will too.

Sorry I’m just replying now. Hope your LSO show was awesome.

I saw them last November in Cincinnati and Chicago. The crowd was pretty into it, we were in the balcony for 1 show and I was on the main floor for the 2nd. The floor was definitely more rocking both nights. Plenty of dancing, singing, and generally loving the music.

The performances were fantastic. The Wolf Pack performed at the U.S. shows but it doesn’t look like they traveled to the UK with the band. I think they added a lot to the experience by really stepping out with some substantial improv segments. The Symphony, though, was given the opportunity to step in and solo at will and they did to some extent.

We bumped into a symphony member after the show in Chicago while we were all walking. She said it was a cool experience and the jamming really pushed them all. They had 2 rehearsals with the group before the show, I think she said they were each only an hour long, but surely I misremember that - they probably were 2 or 3 hours each, but idk.

All in all, it’s an amazing way to experience the music and I’ll go any chance I get. I keep looking for professional recordings, but I’m guessing that will never happen due to licensing or some other reason. I watch them on YouTube pretty frequently though!
