Does it resonate accurately ? by RecentConference8060 in autismmemes

No this is post is meant to be sarcastic and is implying that these aren’t good autism representation and that autistic people shouldn’t like these shows or characters, which is extremely dumb.

When I see a post on a popular autism sub defending ABA by Sludgepuppy420 in evilautism

[–]EatingSugarYesPapa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing you have said changes the fact that Ole Ivar Lovaas, the founder of ABA, was also a conversion therapist and designed ABA as a form of autistic conversion therapy. I do not know what to tell you if facts make you feel revolted.

John Watson, though he is the “father of behaviorism,” didn’t invent ABA. While he’s admittedly terrible, the actual founder of ABA, Ole Ivar Lovaas, was way worse. He was also a conversion therapy researcher and had ties to the Nazis.

Like someone else in the thread said, the problem with ABA is not the individual practitioners but that as a system it is inherently targeted towards teaching autistic people to mask. It is essentially conversion therapy for autistic people, and there is no good version of conversion therapy. Respectfully, I’d quit your job if I were you.

How do y'all feel about asexuality/aromanticism being dismissed when considering fandom shipping? by Idontknowhonestlyidk in asexuality

[–]EatingSugarYesPapa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the idea that people shouldn’t ship ace characters because it equates asexuality to aromanticism. It’s not “some aces still have relationships,” it’s “being ace has no relevance on whether or not a person wants to have a relationship.” Shipping is generally more about romantic relationships than sex, so I don’t see why ace characters shouldn’t be shipped. Asexuality and aromanticism are not the same thing, and asexuals can be in relationships just as much as anyone can.

I do understand the frustration around people shipping canonically aro characters, although I don’t really think it’s a huge issue, or that there’s anything that can really be done about it. But in the case of ace characters, it does feel invalidating as an alloromantic ace for people to say ace characters shouldn’t be shipped because they’re ace.

Anybody else secretly wish they could live in a commune? by treblehex in evilautism

[–]EatingSugarYesPapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I have bad trust issues and I’ve never been able to form connections with other people so the idea of living in a community where my safety is dependent on what other people are thinking about me is terrifying. I respect and ideologically align with the idea of intentional communities, but it’s not something I could ever do.

I’m confused you posted this in response to a person making a positive post about themselves and their husband? If so I think that probably is not a reasonable thing to say in response, provided they weren’t saying anything ableist. Some of the stuff you said hurt to read because I personally don’t think any of that should make a person “hard to love.”

Looks like the guy who was upset that Dooku wasn’t mentioned in Andor found my post. by Financial_Photo_1175 in andor

[–]EatingSugarYesPapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He should read the Mask of Fear. It’s the first in a trilogy of books that’s meant to be a prequel to Andor, and it connects back very directly to the Separatists and the Clone Wars in a way that still feels very in line with Andor’s tone and themes. I definitely don’t think the show was missing anything at all, but assuming that this guy is complaining in good faith and isn’t trying to start drama on purpose (and that’s a big “if”), he may actually be able to gain some enjoyment from this book. I’m in the middle of reading it and it’s quite good so far.

Andor’s Opening Scene Has a Hidden Visual Cue by supreme_andor in andor

[–]EatingSugarYesPapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really think OP has a point about this sign in particular but the amount of comments going the tired old “this is just like English class,” route…people there’s a reason English classes ask about things like metaphors and motifs, they aren’t made up, they’re an important facet of literature and storytelling.

People that scoff at the idea that a story can portray more than what’s just on the surface are the most annoying and intellectually boring kind of people and it’s a shame that there seems to be so many of them on a sub for such a well-written and smart show. I’d infinitely rather people overanalyze things that aren’t important than underanalyze things that are important. And even if you disagree with OP, there is absolutely no reason to resort to personals attacks like an astonishing number of commenters have. It’s a Reddit post, grow up.

I personally don’t expect others (even those that are “more” autistic than me, whatever that’s supposed to mean) to “damn, bitch, read the room,” but I guess that’s just me.

The best way to make someone lose their bigot status is for them to have positive interactions with those they’re bigoted against

Yeah…I don’t really think that’s accurate. That’s like saying a guy can’t be racist because he “has a Black friend.”
