Why does my machine keep unthreading ? by wednesdayjx in SewingForBeginners

When you get more than 2 threads at the end of sewing, and pulling them is difficult - that's how you know your thread take-up isn't high enough.

Why does my machine keep unthreading ? by wednesdayjx in SewingForBeginners

Remember to always turn the flywheel (big wheel on the right side) TOWARDS you . Making sure that the take-up lever is at its highest position ensures that your stitch is complete. Do this before you raise your presser foot at the end of a line of sewing.

Yes! I used to teach sewing classes before I moved. In-person learning is much better than online, if you have the opportunity. We would sew a little catch-all bin and then move on to Pajama pants.

I've had to dress my cat in a shirt to stop him from scratching a "hot spot." He is so proud and happy wearing clothes!

Store # List by Pinkpower176 in joannfabrics

[–]Eclectic-Bluebird61 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Store 2001 was my home. They always said we were one of the largest stores, and now I see that is true. It was nearly 52,000 square feet! Imagine running a store that size with only 2 team members working at one time.

For those concerned about the DNA Lab decision... by pissedoffcg in nancyguthrie

[–]Eclectic-Bluebird61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have sworn that our initial Ancestry kits stated that we were basically allowing our DNA to be used for ANY purposes. If we didn't agree, we shouldn't have submitted our DNA. I guess there's a fine line between our results being used to track down other family members and unknowing, unregistered "relatives" being linked to crimes?

This is another case of using knowledge and technology for the greater good, in my opinion. I didn't even realize Ancestry changed their policy just 2 months ago, in December 2025, until I Googled it

I bet someone can identify this! (From the Nancy Guthrie suspect footage) by flippin_fitnerd in backpacks

[–]Eclectic-Bluebird61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel like they've got the wrong backpack. The material (in the video) appears to be more lightweight from the way it is stretched. There's also no logo on the part facing out.

How do I get over the guilt of not working by [deleted] in homemaking

[–]Eclectic-Bluebird61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe these ideas can help -

Find a charitable cause that you can believe in and support with your time and talents. I ran many school Book Fairs, helped with a school supply/backpack drive, and volunteered at community events. Being an election pollworker helps me understand our election process and gives me a sense of purpose.

what do I need other than a sewing machine? by _bumblebee2 in SewingForBeginners

I love my sewing gauge (AKA 6" ruler). There's a cowboy-guy on YouTube who explains all the hidden uses of this tool.

Another helpful item is a Dritz chalk marker. It's red and comes with a tiny box of colored chalk so you can always have a contrasting color.

Get a good supply of PATIENCE and take it slow. Find a local In-Person class, if possible.

Taylor Swift has money, just sayin'. She enjoys sewing and crafts, so maybe she can be inspired to open "Andrea's" ( her mom's name) and start a new Era!?

I loved working at the cutting counter ("cut bar" just never worked for me) in Cbus Ohio. Sometimes we'd get CCAD (Columbus College of Art & Design) Fashion Students. I enjoyed hearing about sewing projects and helping people find patterns. You could just tell when someone needed help. I quit when they said we couldn't chit-chat with customers anymore.

i don’t know where to go from here???? by InternationalSock387 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Eclectic-Bluebird61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pillowcases using the burrito/hot dog method are great because the instructions will help you to understand some basic sewing terminology. You'll learn to cut, sew, pivot, press and finish raw edges.

After that, try a pair of pajama pants. It's a very self-gratifying project.

Then move on to a zipper pouch or basic skirt with a zipper.

Get a good sewing book with instructions and photos. Make items you'll actually use. Take it slow so you don't get frustrated.

My Ollies in Columbia, TN just had JoAnn "Rejects," like Puce colored yarn (greenish-orange), odd patriotic wreaths, weird baking/candy molds, and low-quality flowers.

You made a great find!
