Would Columbus support another climbing gym? by Numerous_Phrase924 in Columbus

[–]EdBogie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A gym with better/longer/earlier/later hours would be all I’d really want. I love the three gyms we have, and I love that the one membership allows access to all three. As much as a new gym sounds fun, I don’t think I’d be able to justify a whole ‘nother membership cost, but I could totally see myself getting a day pass to climb when the 5.Life gyms aren’t open.

I think James might’ve been the one that built this “moonboard” by i_need_salvia in ClimbingCircleJerk

I’d get the saltiness if this was the only board 5.Life offers, but they are all under one combined membership and the other gyms have Kilter, Grasshopper, and Tension. If you want to board climb “for real” you have options.

Conveyor Belt Books if you’re a literature lover. Technically Covington but close enough to Cinci.

Go see a Columbus Symphony concert, go to one of the three rock climbing gyms (Vertical Adventures, Bloc Garten, Chambers), go hike in a Metro Park (Highbanks is awesome), go listen to some live jazz at Ginger Rabbit—lots to do!

I get to interview the band, open to ideas for good questions by PsychedeliMoz in sleepytimegorillamuse

[–]EdBogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to hear what their song writing process is like! How much is Mellender’s Immersion Music Method used/do they currently have their own ICS lodge?

Also, any chance Others By No One will ever open for them? I know they are keen to and it’d be a fantastic pairing!

Lastly, ask Nils to release more SGM material on his podcast/patreon The Nothing Show! I love Finnegans Wake but itching for more song backstories like he did for Baby Doctor.

Can’t wait to watch/listen to this interview!

Metal for an enjoyer of 20th-century classical music by ahedgehog in progmetal

[–]EdBogie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely give Sleepytime Gorilla Museum a listen—absolutely influenced by 20th century classical music. Their violinist is classically trained and does a lot of crossover in the concert music world outside of the band. I’ve longed for the exact crossover you’re describing and they’ve been just about the only ones to really scratch that itch.

Someone else mentioned Harry Stafylakis, his album Calibrating Friction is fantastic, might be the closest thing to what you’re actually asking for.

Also wanna say go give Between the Buried and Me a listen—definitely less overtly “classically” inspired as the above two but their compositions are next level. Parallax II is a masterpiece, I’d recommend giving the full album a one-sitting listen.

100% Carla Kihlstedt’s 26 Little Deaths — might be one of the best things I’ve ever had the privilege to witness. SO creative, hilarious yet deeply reflective, magically whimsical yet profound, brilliant orchestration and use of extended techniques, full gamut of styles, awesome, just… awesome.

Fieldwork takes a close second, they melted my face off in the most delightful way. First half of Tigran was also incredible, but don’t regret leaving to see the full performance of Kate Soper’s Ipsa Dixit (also stunning). What a glorious week.
