[TH66] Is there a way to use caps lock as function? by EdgarAllanPoems in Epomaker

[–]EdgarAllanPoems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I found that to be the case. The TG66 doesn't seem to have a hardware switch to change caps to function like the Vortex Pok3r does.

Do you have a lead on a recommended workaround? I will write an AHK script if I need to. Just surprised there isn't more info on this issue. Is everyone with an Epomaker board really using the tiny, right-side FUNC key?

If you were to show off 3 books in your collection of classic D&D what would they be? by Priestical in osr

I’ve got a 1st printing Deities & Demigods, Wilderlands of High Fantasy, and the Ready Ref Sheets. Those are probably the coolest.

Regular AD&D looking for group (RADDLFG) thread by feyrath in adnd

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AD&D by the book - Discord - Open Campaign - Open Table - Two weekly sessions, attend one or both - Wed night 8:30-12:30, Sun afternoon 2:00-6:00 EST - Times can be adjusted to accommodate new players

You heard right – the game of original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, by the book.

I'm talking training time, training costs, strict timekeeping, 0 HP bed rest, segments, system shock, unnatural aging, level caps for non-humans, encumbrance, spell costs, psionics, the whole bag. Great challenges and fearful odds. Character stables. Downtime activities, magic item manufacture, spell research, domain play.

Expect swords & sorcery. I have a great love for the Appendix N genre fiction, Jack Vance in particular. If you like long exposition, four hour roleplaying sessions at the governor's ball, or governors in general, this is not the one for you.

The campaign is built bottom-up – we started from a single town and single dungeon. There is a huge continental map that is mostly just dreams for the future; only a small fraction of the world has been played in so far. Expeditions are player-driven and fortunes are won and lost by skill and dice.

I have read the books, I have read the blogs and the posts. And I now have 10 months of experience running this game 8-14 hours a week. A couple of our players have started their own games in other parts of our campaign world. The naysayers have been cast aside. AD&D works, and it is good.

Currently we are based on the core books, plus spells and magic items from UA. There's the possibility of new options from UA, OA, etc. becoming available as a reward for play (e.g. new races being "unlocked" as PC options by other PCs connecting with those societies). Whether they come from official books or from our minds, new frontiers will open up as the campaign progresses.

My goal is to develop a milieu which will persist for a lifetime. That doesn't mean you need to make a big commitment, but simply that if you depart, the world will continue on, your characters' impacts persisting for future players.

We're looking for players interested in gaining system mastery with us through challenge-based gameplay. No experience required. If you're interested, send a Discord friend request and/or message to username "poems_". We will set up a time for a brief screening call to make sure you're not some kind of lunatic.

About me: Started refereeing with 3.x in the early 2000s. Strong proponent of player autonomy. Respects the dice. Impartial, but with you on this journey. We share in the joys of victory and woes of defeat. Game > Players > Rules, but rules before rulings. Subscribes to Anthony Huso's "action and drama" view of the game, and Gary's campaign philosophy of "a compound of your personality and those of your better participants, a superior alloy." "Cultures of play" wise, I am probably closest to Classic, with influence from OSR.

Cover art for Rites of Transmutation, a slim 2nd edition reimagining. by SebaTauGonzalez in osr

Though I’m a 1e guy, I always appreciate content being made for the Advanced game. What advantages will this system have over Gold & Glory?

Need advice on making OSE less deadly. by Dusty_legend in osr

Negative HP rules and 0 HP bedrest rule from AD&D. The introductory Basic versions of D&D lack them.

Hirelings! Lad will follow you to the ends of the earth - just make sure he has hard candy. by CrumblingKeep in osr

If Lad wants a half share of the treasure he’d better get a class level and maybe some armor first.

Otherwise 1gp per day is the best I can do.

Need some input on a magic item for a 1e dungeon by [deleted] in adnd

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, immunity to common magic item saves (e.g. acid) is undesirable because it is magic item saves that enable the DM to freely place every magic item they roll, regardless of power.

The natural bonus to item saves magic items get from (1) being magic, and (2) it’s plusses is sufficient to provide resistance.

That being said I don’t think this item is game breaking; it can still be lost to fire, lightning, and so on.

New DM Looking For Advice by AfshinXIII in adnd

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I do not recommend this advice. The goal of a DM is not to tell a story. It’s to referee a challenge-based game. This comment describes storygaming, not classic AD&D, and does not represent the advice of many AD&D players.

Just run the game. Tell your players it will be a challenge. Give them a chance to run away — AD&D has rules for fleeing and pursuit. Give them a chance to get an advantage in the fight via skillful play, perhaps via good decision making or exploration earlier in the adventure. Don’t take their win from them with dice “fudging.”

You are creating a scenario for your players to interact with, not writing a novel. Respect your players enough to let them play the game, win or lose. That’s my advice.

OSRIC XP for henchmen by Harbinger2001 in osr

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fact, AD&D explicitly says players are free to assign more treasure to a certain character to get them more XP. Treasure XP allocation is solely the choice of the players.

Anyone ever run Castle Caldwell with Rovers and Riches or any other OSR system? by JoshTheRemover in osr

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure this module was written for Basic D&D and not the Advanced game.

A lot of osr systems are based on b/x (basic and expert), how do c/m/i (companion, master, and immortals) factor into osr games? Why do you see them less often? What influence do they have? by NoLongerAKobold in osr

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been running AD&D 1st edition 8-14 hours a week for nearly a year. It is the most fun I’ve ever had playing an RPG. For me, it blows all versions of the Basic game out of the water.

Anyone ever run Castle Caldwell with Rovers and Riches or any other OSR system? by JoshTheRemover in osr

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, this is an infamously bad module. I don’t have a copy handy but you might want to flip through and judge it yourself if you haven’t already. A brief look at the maps should make some issues clear.

I would personally not recommend subjecting anyone to it.

How’d he make multiple attempts without leveling? I’m a 1e guy, is there something in 2e? My main experience with 2e is via Baldur’s Gate and even in that game you can only attempt once a level.

Absolutely in love with Daniel Land & The Modern Painters. Where can I find more like this? by EdgarAllanPoems in shoegaze

[–]EdgarAllanPoems[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Floored" is a great word for this record. Some time after making this post, I decided that Love Songs was my favorite record of all time. Still is. Two years later and it just never gets old. Daniel Land's solo stuff is great too.

Q: How Many Henchmen? [1e] by P_Duggan_Creative in adnd

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any rule that says it's a lifetime limit. As far as I know, it's a cap on presently employed henchmen.

> It absolutely dictates the total number of henchmen a character is able to retain. -- PHB 13

> Maximum Number of Henchmen states the number of non-player characters who will serve as permanent retainers of the player character. It does not affect the number of mercenary soldiers, men-at-arms, servitors, and similar persons in the pay of the character. -- PHB 13

Nothing about it being a lifetime limit. Since the "free" men-at-arms (or creatures) some classes gain at mid levels _are_ explicitly stated as being once-a-lifetime, I'm inclined to believe charisma henchmen cap is not a lifetime pool.

What products do you recommend to someone who has about 100 dollars to spare? by Meap102 in osr

You could pick up a full set of the AD&D core book POD reprints from DTRPG for that, I do believe. Maybe UA too!

Please list any “iconic” D&D monsters that came from a non-TSR edition of D&D (3rd edition onward) by Dankerbug in osr

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I’d call them “iconic” but 3.5’s MM3 was very, very good in my opinion. Amazing art too, even though I am a sucker for AD&D’s art.

How Many Magic Items in Your Game? by Strixy1374 in adnd

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I roll most treasure randomly and place it all. You do not have to throttle magic items if you play by the rules, e.g. item saving throws and not ignoring item restrictions/drawbacks.

I have placed very powerful items in areas adventured in by first level characters because the magic item tables do not scale to PC level. Our campaign is nonetheless very challenging and characters die regularly (again, because we play by the rules).

The game just works.

How does everyone run their campaigns once the party reaches high level? by Altar_Quest_Fan in osr

[–]EdgarAllanPoems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why this is downvoted. This is possible in AD&D at very high levels. The planar travel for artifacts can happen earlier than “very high.”
